GHOSTS OF 82 COUP: Tortured and wrongfully dismissed. Declared innocent but not yet compensated.

  • This is the story of ex - airforce-men who were arrested, tortured, jailed and dismissed by the government of Kenya's second President, the late Daniel Arap Moi on suspicion of having known or participated in the 1982 attempted coup. After battling in court for decades to have their names cleared of any wrongdoing, justice was served after they were declared innocent in 2016 and awarded compensation of millions of shillings.
The court order to have the government pay them has since been ignored by the office of the Attorney General with a good number of the ex - soldiers dying of old age and diseases that can have been cured had they had money. Many if not all are languishing in poverty.
Here is the story of the pain they endured for being members of the Kenya Airforce the day the attempted coup happened.

I was not yet born by the time this happened but coming from a Military family, this story infuriates me everytime I hear about it. So many lives were destroyed by irrational handling of the event. I still believe stopping the coup saved the country from going through the Ugandan trajectory, but the incompetence in identifying the guilty was conspicous. May God be with those who were falsely punished and their families. Their lives have never been the same 😪.

I was in the army barracks at the time as my father was a soldier then. I was 12 years then. Serikali ni siri kali sana. During war soldiers become devils in human form. After the coup, the military was to be filled everywhere by Kalenjin tribesmen. Was it set up deliberately? Never get into trouble with the military. It's death before you actually die. I thank God that I never became a soldier. May God abolish armies across the globe.

    • @kamaungethe9739

Moi had foreknowledge of the coup but wanted it handled internally by the military. Whether or not he let it fester so that he could then use it to purge all other tribes from the army and civil service, is anyone's guess but I believe he did. What worries me now is the direction Kenya is taking; people wanting to elect certain dangerous people from certain tribes, thieves, Moi orphans back into the center of power. It will set Kenya back decades.

Understand that the reasons for the coup were numerous and valid; all sorts of injustices, rampant corruption, mismanagement, poverty and disease, cronyism etc. Who was behind the coup wasn't really as important as Moi's ineptitude and inability to steer the country down the right path. And in hindsight, history vindicated the coup plotters, dead or alive.
