The record-breaking 15th season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is its most ambitious yet. In the seismic wake of Covid-19 and all things 2020, The Gang stands at a crossroads in this strange new world. The rules are changing quicker than anyone can keep up with, despite herculean efforts from Mac (Rob McElhenney), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny DeVito) to continue business as usual. Now, they must face the music and decide who they’ll become in the cultural upheaval that is 2021. Across the span of eight episodes - and the Atlantic Ocean - we find them answer in a way only they could think to.

I think the struggle for the viewer now is that they view Mac with absolute pity...in the old episodes, you kinda enjoyed seeing the Gang fail because they were absolutely bolstered by their ego etc...but now they're all extremely insecure and fragile and it adds this layer of tragedy that makes the show a little bit less funny.

Charlie can speak a language without being able to read it and read a language without being able to speak it. Perfectly balanced.
He speaks Irish too
He only thinks he can't speak it because he thinks he is just speaking gibberish, even though he knows it has rules and vocabulary. He rarely speaks it to anyone else, so he thinks he can't really speak it, only write it. When he meets his pen pal, who is really his biological father, he speaks it just fine.

Just as a note, the language is just Irish. To call it Gaelic is like calling Spanish Ibero-Romance. Technically correct, but not the correct name. Irish is a gaelic language just like Welsh, Cornish, Manx, etc.
Conversely, in Irish it's called Gaeilge. I guess we're just complicated like that...

This scene is what solidified this episode as a classic for me. Top notch writing, seriously feels like the early seasons, in the best way. Sunny is still going strong!

As an Irish person, I’m so glad they called it “Irish or Gaelic”. We call it Irish. Nobody calls it Gaelic here.

MacDonald is primarily a Scottish surname anyways.
There’s a few Irish branches that predate the Scottish MacDonalds but both countries developed their own. Domhnaill was a common Gaelic name so it makes sense.
I would say since Clan Donald was so big that yeah it's primarily a Scottish surname but it is both a native Irish surname and a Scottish surname. Because the Gaels spread from Ireland to Scotland and the Isle of Mann, there are a lot of surnames that are the same in both Ireland and Scotland. Charlie's last name, Kelly, is also a common Scottish surname.
The Irish cheiftains brought the MacDonalds over to Ireland as Gallowglass mercenaries many hundreds of years ago.
Also humdreds of years ago a branch of Clan Donald settled in Antrim - they became the Mcdonnells.
McDonnell (also variants McConnell+ McDaniel) is the Irish form of McDonald. There were earlier native Irish McDonnells families as well.
McDonalds also came over to Ireland as a result of the Highland + Islands Clearances.
I believe the brothers who started the McDonald's food chain had parents who were Irish immigrants.
The orange on the Irish flag is that of the House Of Orange, with William Of Orange being a figurehead to many unionists it was included in the flag to help foster peace, so even if Mac is Dutch there is still an Irish connection!

I like that mac is back to being both somewhat stupid and smart. I didnt like in season 13 and 14 where he just seemed really stupid and didnt stand up to anybody or call anyone out for anything.
