- Set in 1832 West Yorkshire, England, Gentleman Jack is inspired by the true-story and coded journals of Anne Lister (played by Suranne Jones), and follows her attempt to revitalize her inherited home, Shibden Hall. Most notably for the time period, a part of Lister’s plan is to help the fate of her own family by taking a wife.
The prospective wife, Ann Walker, is played by Peaky Blinders’ Sophie Rundle. Gentleman Jack is an eight-episode drama series from BAFTA-winning writer Sally Wainwright.
Terrific series, a fascinating story, loved this tender scene.

Ann Walker is so captivating... It is so easy to fall in love with her and desire to protect her. Anne Lister has very masculine attitudes, but she seduces Ann is a superbly womanly way. Both Ann and Anne are irresistible in their own way. It is great to see that this love story between two women has been portrayed with such incredible sensitivity! It is so touching how it unfolds. Thank you for the great work and devotion of all involved in this incredible project. Anne Lister and Ann Walker have been represented so beautifully.

And unfortunately not in a true light how it really was. Lister had Walker assessed for 4 months by Dr Belcom to make sure she was stable enough to write a will before marring her. Lister wanted Walker's money and she used it to build her mine pits do improvements to Shibdon Hall and fund her traveling. I just hope Lister had some affection and respect for Walker as she was the only one of her lovers who actually married her despite her family objections and social status that she lost by doing so. I guess it is a TV show and they wanted to make their love more romantic then it ever really was on Lister's part anyway.
@Pamela Gc Of cause not, there are bad people anywhere. The movie ' Secret diaries of miss Anne Lister' gives a better representation of what Anne thought of Walker. 80% of the movie is about her relationship with Mariana and she was the love of her life and in the end they bring Walker into it. And there was no love or true affection on Lister's part towards Walker.

My God that was so intimate and romantic. This is one of the best, if not the best, lesbian love story on film. Everything from the writing, filming, directing and, of course, the superb acting by Suranne and Sophie made this the love story for generations.

what's sooo beautiful is SIR-Anne (as I now call her) and Sophie...they're really feeling the love and intimacy for each other....some of what's going on is REAL..not acting! Several of Sally's scripts do not have a kiss notated ....YET they are kissing as they themselves want to...and it's steamy! I think they're falling in love ...as we are right along with them.... Ya don't have to be gay or bi to enjoy exceptional sensuality...I just think you have to be alive and open! They're great!!!

Watching this scene with no audio is an excellent study in pacing and the artistry of these actors. That being said, the musical theme (starting at 1:55) is beautifully written, and the note that sounds (starting 2:21) counting the beats until the kiss. Fantastic. I think it was also used for the ring scene (when AW turns it down). Also, that note... whatever the hell that instrument is, it sounds like it's being digitally played backward. (But that may be my crappy hearing from using earbuds for decades.) As ever: grateful for to Crimsonjett for posting this.
My dad did work for the set and has a thank you card in his office from the crew of the show

I love this music piece. It’s the same one from where Walker is looking out the window. The time when A Lister cut her hand. Walker is holding the cloth with which she wiped her blood with. I super love and adore that scene/music.

I'm not sure if this is intentional but the way that Sophie and Suranne are so often seen low in the frame and the other higher up is really interesting. Like in this scene, the scene where Anne gets injured from the paper knife and when Anne gives her the gondola pin. Kudos to whoever made that subtle detail happen.

They all worked very hard on this series and did a LOT of hard work to make it feel right. Since both are not lesbians, they certainly did all the homework so that it was expressed in a way you might never know! When they auditioned for Miss Walker, they looked for chemistry from the start. Not only that, but she grew with the part, which was also a very natural outcome in many scenes. The director did a wonderful job of orchestrating, and they used a coach to help the intimate scenes as they unfold. So, in the end, when all that hard work comes together, you get a masterful piece of work, which is very British, as they are very detailed and fussy about things turning out right! Even the tinderbox used was of the right era! Masterful work and the acting by Suranne is extremely well played and was a master stroke of casting! She embodied the role of Ann with all her might! AL was very much more experienced than AW, and her seduction was based on leading, teaching, and keeping fear out of the picture as much as possible. She knew what she was dealing with, and what she wanted in the end. And she also wanted to please AW. Giving pleasure was something AL was known for among other things. She was never one to just 'assume' anything. You know right from the start you are going to like this woman, faults and all! I know I did, as I totally get where she was coming from in her manner of dress and desire to excel in everything she did. I was just not as brave as she was, but then she had a much better home life to be as she wished. I am glad I found this work.

I believe this scene is both beautiful and mesmerising and could be compared to the behaviour of two creatures that mate for life approaching and presenting a ‘mating’ display. Delicately acted, skilfully lit and directed to draw every atom of atmosphere. I cannot wait to watch the second series and, two years ago, really enjoying reading the book to my wife. For one reason or another my reading lasted over many months. Wanted to visit Shibden but it closed during the pandemic.

Aww. Ann Lister was so sweet and romantic. No matter who you are you'd be tickled pink if someone surprised you with a romantic afternoon like this. If it were today, they would have a delicious Picnic Basket with Plates, Cheese, Crackers, Vegetables, Salad, Mini Sandwiches & Wine and A Cake for Dessert. They would have some Romantic Music (I'm Partial To R & B) : - D, then they would have a romantic interlude.
While they portrayed her like that, it kinda does suck that she only married Ann walker for her money and status. Her true love of her life decided to marry a man instead of risking it all to be with Anne Lister. Having said that it was a huge step at the time for them to have married even if it wasn’t legally observed. They deserve that plaque they have at the chapel they married in.
@@cloudy1227 I've read a large amount of the diaries and believe they are an honest portrayal as Lister did not think anyone would be able to decode her writings. And, she wrote extensively to empty her thoughts and improve her daily mental health. Her reasons for marrying were far more complex than just "money". There are numerous mentions in the diary of her falling for Ann Walker, becoming emotionally attached, and unhinged around her. For years prior, she desperately wanted a life long companion. It wasn't just to get "money". Lister was more than willing, multiple times, to marry persons without much money (Mariana and the widow Mrs. Barlow, as two examples).
Lister also writes in her diary that it would be better and less complicated to join their lives if Walker had significantly less money. That said, nearly all marriages in that time period had financial considerations before matches were made. So, they were no different to that extent. And, I believe that Lister (who had money herself) pairing up with Walker and her fortune is what allowed their lesbian relationship and living together to be more publicly known and acceptable. And, this is evident that their status in the community was elevated when they were building new buildings and they both participated publicly in the ceremony to lay the first stone. Their joining of money gave them enough community clout to weather the storms and attacks for living so "outside of the box" for that time period.

Ann Lister was a bit of a mercenary as in she needed a lady with money though she did love Ann at one point I understand it wasn't all roses as Anne Lister had a wandering eye
The cheating event shown in the series, after the marriage, is actually not in Lister's diary. On that Christmas visit, Lister writes that Mariana visited her room for one hour and Lister writes that she acted with complete propriety. So, maybe that was a bit of creative license that the show did in assuming something happened. But, Lister was usually very honest in her diary with her thoughts and documentations and did not think anyone would decode her secret coded writings.
In those days, money was evaluated in just about every marriage match. Lister was willing to marry people who had little money (Mariana, the widow Mrs. Barlow). Walker having money was a bonus, but Lister writes at one point that things would have been easier if she had less of it, as it was complicated. I think pairing up with someone with more money is what allowed the couple to live somewhat more openly as their standing in the community increased when they started to build new businesses and eventually held the public ceremony laying the first stone of the casino which more publicly announced their partnership. Because they lived so "outside of the box" for that time period, higher level community status allowed them to weather the storm more.
