As an octogenarian Canadian born in Antrim Northern Ireland I am very heartened by this discussion. My father was a Presbyterian my mom a Catholic and consequently I and my siblings belonged to a third category of ‘ other ‘ I learned to speak Irish Gaelic and still relish the rare opportunity to speak it. My hope has always been that the youth of all Ireland will be spared this ugly ‘ othering ‘ experience and instead learn to know and understand the rich history of all that is Irish.

Im from Monaghan so Ive never seen the North as foreign or any less Irish. But sadly, there certainly is an ignorance in parts of the 26 Counties towards Northern Ireland. And its just purely an ignorance. Anytime I come across it, I am always standing up for Northern Ireland and its people.

Some people south of the border are very anti northern, mind you after so many years of the troubles on the TV, in some ways it’s understandable that the north might be seen as just troublesome….

Good discussion. The comments about education, or lack of, both north and south about the other rings true. Yes, Northerners receive a British education, that mostly excludes information on IRL. It's no wonder NI folk look at IRL as a foreign country, not nationalists of course, but others. The South is maybe a bit better, but few Southerns venture north, except for the Titanic museum etc. There is still a lingering fear. Why go where you are not welcome? Or where there is risk? NI has come a long way, but there is some way to go yet

He's completely wrong about the jockeying for position around asking someone about their job. Everyone in the South is 1 to 2 generations removed from the farm, bar some of the cities there's no class, it literally trying to make conversation 99 per cent of the time.

The woman with the red jacket........had no clue where Kerry and Galway are! If I was that thick I certainly wouldn’t admit to it in public.

Seems like there are more Brits comfortable around Spanish and Turkish people, than there are Irish people, having recently discovered the North was inhabited, who are comfortable around Nordies. Obviously not, just the impression from the crap being spoken here. In most of Ireland if you move two streets over you're going to be regarded with suspicion; a feckless blow-in to be shown your place, or in Dublin to be never spoken to at all, unless it's a yout asking for your wallet. Being "other" and from the North, is much the same as being "other" to Dubs if you're from Cork, even once you buy the little book to translate their language.

What a load of bollox this conversation-most people in Ireland have a parochial outlook therefore there is not going to be widespread mixing of peoples anyway -someone from Newry would rarely be in Lurgan and that is within the North

Ask the Republic tax payer if they prepared to pay for the cost of the North.

It’s more about infrastructure to make things better. Transport and health care are the main issues.
