Baker doesn't have any experience recruiting or developing top prospects. The top prospects want to get to the league, so they usually want some place that has a track record developing players at their position. Great show guys. Obviously I don't know the details, but big picture, Texas has got great opportunity to win a championship over next 3 or 4 years with special QB's so would like to see Texas go all in with NIL to get some difference makers at DT position.
Hope youre right, but it could be that we hit our peak defensively under Sark these last two years. The quality of the interior DL has been a real strength of rather average defensive units but now that strength has eroded. Some of that erosion will be a problem this year but esp beginning in 2025 we're set to regress bigtime in defending against the run. And if you can't stop the run in the SEC, you're not going to be a top team. Sark has the ability to be a tremendous GM-style college coach a la Mack Brown but he's too self-indulgent to become that. Defensive recruiting as a whole has seemed to lag quite a bit as compared to the offense. Same as on field results. It's hard not to blame the staff for this problem, and my evidence is the fact that they did not even offer 1 of the 5* DL in this class. How are you going to get a 5* DL of you don't even offer one?? Absolutely absurd. It's not rocket science to figure out that you get what you focus on and emphasize. Sark prioritizes skill guys and so that's where we end up being the most successful. Had we not gotten Simmons, Hill, Black, Williams, and a few other guys like that, I would be saying we have a Lincoln Riley problem.
BB always makes it seem as though if UT pays a guy a certain amount the entire team is gone! Brown will decommit soon and im sure NIL is a factor in that recruitment as well!
Let this play out during the season. I believe in Baker and Sark’s decision to hire him. If these guys develop and play well, then I could see some flips late. Baker has to prove himself.
Texas just needs to keep its eye on the transfer portal. Oregon has like 10 DL high 4 stars in the last two years. Several freshmen hit the portal every year because they have so many DL that they can run 10 deep easy. Ben Roberts, Johnny Bowens III (still available), Tevita Pomee were three DL that hit the Oregon portal this year. You win some you lose some. Last year Texas stole a high rate guy from Oregon (Brandon Baker) and Aaron Butler. People in Oregon were not crying NIL, NIL, NIL... its more than just NIL for any school. Oregon is cleaning house with DL. Last year they got 5 star Breland, 4 star Jericho Johnson and now Sharma. That line is stacked with heavy weight transfers and up and coming high school freshmen.
It's June... nobody can sign until December. Treat it like we did OL in '22 and just stick with the guys you like while building up a war chest to deploy during flip season and/or portal 1. In the interim, develop the guys in the room to the fullest and make this defense a fun one to play in like what we saw from Zona in the Alamo Bowl turnover fiesta at OU's expense.
Tough day for IDL recruiting. I'm not going trash a Kenny Baker, because he has only been here 6 months. Just got to go back reevaluate. This is not ideal, but you have to keep pushing. Portal recruiting is going to be CRUCIAL.
Texas and Coach Baker sure better bevable to develope these lower rated kids, because i dont think they get any of the recruits on the board other than maybe Sanders. Obviously what they're doing isnt working.
Obviously, Texas's philosophy of wanting players who want to play FOR Texas, not AT Texas is not working for the DL. They have lost 3 highly ranked players in the last two years, and this will probably come back to haunt them as soon as next year. Sark better figure it out sooner rather than later.
Its not all NIL. Remember, Oregon has a collective. They don't just pay kids money to sign with them. Money gets distributed evenly for players in various sports. Portal kids are different deals.
I have a feeling we’re picking and choosing who we’ll spend Oregon/Sharma money on. Brandon Brown, Charles are probably those guys that we’ll go over the top for. I’d bet they felt turned off by something Sharma said or did that made Texas not fork out the money.
Too late for Charles. He committed to FSU this afternoon. We're down to Brown and Sanders now. And I guess we'll go after SMU and Abilene Christian's DT commits after that!
Baker doesn't have the track record it takes to attract top DL recruits, so Texas will probably have to "overpay" until and unless we see good results at DL on the field. The good news is that Texas will stay in touch with all these kids until they sign elsewhere, so a good season could lead to some worthwhile flips.
@david_humidor That's what I mean. They'll usually only be competitive for top talent at positions where they don't offer a proven developmental track if they're willing to pay significantly more than top programs that do offer such development.
Look, if the player is susceptible to a bidding war, then by all means let an Oregon show their hand, pay, develop him & that same player will be available as a finished product in portal, if wanted, bid, if not don't but this UIL money spent now is a waste; long game gentlemen
NIl does play a big factor obviously. But there's something about Texas's defense that defensive players ain't buying into. PK has been there for 3 years and he hasn't been able to recruit like a defensive coordinator at Texas should... Texas has been losing at defensive tackle, cornerbacks, linebackers,. So it's not totally and n i l problem. And that's obvious based on the defensive recruits choosing FSU or Texas A&m or Oklahoma over Texas.... It's a PK problem...
How is it a PK problem? They're doing pretty well with top prospects in the back seven. The problem is that Baker is a relative unknown with no experience with top-tier recruiting, and a scant track record of player development. Top recruits want NFL careers, so they gravitate to schools that offer the best opportunity to have one. Texas isn't that place for DL until Baker proves himself.
