No synthesizer there! That's the famous Deacy Amp, an electric guitar amplifier created in 1972 by John Deacon. He used an amplifier circuit board from a Supersonic PR80 portable radio found in a skip, fitted into a speaker cabinet and powered by a 9-volt battery.

I don't think that's quite all that he's doing here. I think this song has a double meaning for Freddie in terms of his sexuality. You can interpret the word "feller" as a corruption of the word "fellow," and "fairy" is slang for a gay man. I'd hate to sound gross, but I would think Feddie is also the type to reinterpret the words "master" and "stroke" to refer to a private activity. I believe other lyrics in this song will support my theory.

      He painted this in bedlam.
Fairy paintings were popular during Richard dadds time.
He was still in bedlam while crowley was little and I really wonder if crowley heard about dadd growing up.
Please look further into Richard dadd to anyone that see this short summary.
      Freddie was a zoroastrian.
The parī is like a persian fairy.
I understand Freddie's intrest in the fairy painting after learning that.
Parī are said to be female while the male spirits are divs.

Freddie said he wasn't inspired very often by a work of art, in terms of creating a song around one, but on this occasion he said he was. He would go to the gallery and study it carefully. In my mind's eye, l can see him there leaning in to the painting taking in every little detail. That was his nature. He was masterful when taking up his own works of art and truly a perfectionist which is why Queen succeeded. So grateful the musical genius that you were and are. When I heard this song in 1977, I was 12, at that time I didn't know about that painting or I even didn't understand the lyrics because I'm a Japanese native, but I was totally blown away with everything I heard. I'm now 56 and still addicted to this song. アリガトウ!

this song is pure magic and shows what great musicians they are! you don't find something like that anymore today. One of the greatest songs EVER (in my opinion)! I think I am a musician. After I heard this song I realized I am only a small four chord song maker. THIS is music in perfection and nothing less. Thank god that there is music like this in this world. Thank you Queen for writing this song for us!

This blew me away when I heard it all those years ago. No wonder I couldn't I couldn't figure out the words.
    He's a fairy feller
The fairy folk have gathered round the new moon shine
To see the feller crack a nut at nights noon time
To swing his axe he swears, as it climbs he dares
    To deliver...
    The master-stroke
    Ploughman, "waggoner will", and types
    Politician with senatorial pope - he's a dilly-dally-o
    Pedagogue squinting, wears a frown
And a satyr peers under lady's gown, dirty fellow
    What a dirty laddio
    Tatterdemalion and a junketer
    There's a thief and a dragonfly trumpeter - he's my hero
Fairy dandy tickling the fancy of his lady friend
    The nymph in yellow
    What a quaere fellow
    Soldier, sailor, tinker, tailor, ploughboy
    Waiting to hear the sound
    And the arch-magician presides
    He is the leader
Oberon and titania watched by a harridan
Mab is the queen and there's a good apothecary-man

I do love this song so much too. Inspired by Richard Dadd's painting. The artist defied convention and painted fairies instead of the popular religious themes. My mum and aunt (big Queen fans) took me to see the painting when I was 15. I've read his poem/explanation for the painting several times. Many spots are hard to understand but I do appreciate the genius of the man as I do the genius of Mr Freddie Mercury.
