Basically what you mentioned in your video. The smoke smells amazing on a pellet grill when cooking but the results are average. Hi. I'm a newbie to smoking. Is that a Pellet smoker? I just bought a Pit Boss vertical electric smoker (PBV3A1). I called Pit Boss and they said no, don't use pellets, they'll get too hot. Did they mean if I just put them in the tray underneath? You think I could use that tube and put them in my electric smoker?
Hey Eddie! Mine is a pellet smoker. Which means it uses pellets as its primary heat source. You can definitely put pellets in the smoke tube and use it in your smoker. I would stick with Pit Boss recommendations as far as what you use in the smoker itself though. The smoke tube is always a good option to get more smoke flavor onto your food. I’ve never used the unit that you have, but I feel like most of the time wood chips are recommended. This is the tube I use and I have nothing but good things to say about it. amzn.to/3caZRbO Thanks for watching my video! If you’re not already, it would be great to have you as a subscriber. Thanks!
I used it tonight but man I had a fire at the end of the tube after 1 hour, I had to get it out quickly. I did wood chips and pellets, what could I have done wrong?
Love your videos brother. I've got the exact same smoker that you are using. I've had it about a year and love it. I just did my first burn with a smoke tube. I did some nice thick chops. I had the chops on the middle rack and the smoke tube on the bottom rack. Chops turned out excellent but it seemed like the ones that were directly above the tube cooked a little faster. Is that something that you've encountered or was that just an odd occurance.
Oh yeah! I have learned to keep my tube off to one side or underneath my aluminum pan. That’s a big benefit to having so many shelves. That tube puts off more heat that some people realize. Thanks for watching my video! Reach out anytime
@@TheAmericanSmoke I meant if only using the pellet tube for smoke like on a non pellet grill how strong is the smoke flavor. I read Pit Boss Pellets have the least smoke flavor and the most ash. What is your experience.
@@DavidMoriconiM3inspect I mix pellets with chips. Solves the problem of pellets burning too quickly and chips burning out. Another key is not to let either be exposed to excessive humidity either in the hopper or bag. High moisture content affects their performance.
The lack of air flow from below the pellets will probably limit your ability to keep it going inside the closed chamber. It may be worth a shot though! Good luck
I tried a tube and an Amazin box but I had them too close to the main here and all the pellets went up and I had a huge heat spike. I am going to move my water tray up a couple notches and the smoke tube will be probably above the water to avoid spontaneous combustion
It’s always a good idea to avoid spontaneous combustion. Always Make sure the tube doesn’t have fat dripping down onto it. Thanks for watching. If you’re not already, it would be great to have you as a subscriber! Thanks
@@TheAmericanSmoke No drippings. Just to close to the pellet smoker heat source. I have the Sportsman 7 vertical smoker. It really needs a PID WiFi controller, otherwise I love the plentiful space to smoke everything
i hate to say pit boss dropped the ball on the pvb4ps2 vertical smoker. It cooks well - don't get me wrong however - there is almost no smoke flavor what so ever. You actually get more smoke flavor from the pit boss grill's instead ' The fact that to get more smoke flavor is to use a smoke tube ' says it all.
Englander her from the north and even WE want him back!! Everything Murica does, London copies, rest of Britain suffers. Under The God Emperor Trump they (parliament) started getting some backbone! Now we are almost as Effed as you!
Good smoke is what’s known as clean smoke. Light grey, light blue and sometimes even clear. Produces a light Smokey sweet flavor. Bad smoke, or dirty smoke, is cloudy. Darker grey to black and thicker than clean smoke. Has a much higher content of soot and creosote. Droplets of other chemicals that haven’t gotten hot enough to burn up can also be found in this type of smoke. Produces a much heavier smoke flavor on the food but is typically bitter and a turn off on the pallet of most.
@@mcconn746 I find that the smoke tube produces mildly dirty smoke but not a detrimental amount. They effectively put more smoke flavor and color on my bbq. Most home cooks prefer to use them. Professionals don’t care as much for them. Mad Scientist BBQ did a video a while back in this topic and he did not prefer the flavor. He is a pro though and typically uses all wood fires in a traditional stick burning pit to produce his bbq. A pellet smoker will never duplicate that type of bbq. They are just different. Thanks for watching! Try some of these tips out.

Anytime! Smoke on my brother
I’ve been struggling with my brand new 4 series not getting hot enough. I’ve only had 1 smoke on it so far.
Did you run the heat up to 350 before starting your cook?
Only hit the like button cuz I DO remember crying for Apple-Cherry-bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin as a 6-pound 8-ounce newborn.
Those were some tuff teethless days. Smoke on!!!
Nice video 👍
Thank you!
Do you need to take the smoke tube out after it burns away?
It’s either or. I leave mine. It’s going to be hot so take care when moving it. Thanks for watching. Smoke on!!!
I used it tonight but man I had a fire at the end of the tube after 1 hour, I had to get it out quickly. I did wood chips and pellets, what could I have done wrong?
Possibly too many chips. If fat drips onto the tube it will catch up as well.
Thanks mate great video 👍

Love your videos brother. I've got the exact same smoker that you are using. I've had it about a year and love it. I just did my first burn with a smoke tube. I did some nice thick chops. I had the chops on the middle rack and the smoke tube on the bottom rack. Chops turned out excellent but it seemed like the ones that were directly above the tube cooked a little faster. Is that something that you've encountered or was that just an odd occurance.
Oh yeah! I have learned to keep my tube off to one side or underneath my aluminum pan. That’s a big benefit to having so many shelves.
That tube puts off more heat that some people realize.

how is the smoke flavor only using pit boss pellets in the smoke tube
That’s all I use. I burn competition blend in the hopper and the wood of choice in my tube. Is that what you mean?
@@TheAmericanSmoke I meant if only using the pellet tube for smoke like on a non pellet grill how strong is the smoke flavor. I read Pit Boss Pellets have the least smoke flavor and the most ash. What is your experience.
@@DavidMoriconiM3inspect I mix pellets with chips. Solves the problem of pellets burning too quickly and chips burning out. Another key is not to let either be exposed to excessive humidity either in the hopper or bag. High moisture content affects their performance.
Can't we just put a bowl inside with pellets and light them in the bowl?
The lack of air flow from below the pellets will probably limit your ability to keep it going inside the closed chamber. It may be worth a shot though! Good luck
baby crying for bbq! fun! Thank you. Good energy! She's the boss, right? ;)
You know it! Thanks for watching and smoke on!!!
Always
Make sure the tube doesn’t have fat dripping down onto it.

@@TheAmericanSmoke No drippings. Just to close to the pellet smoker heat source. I have the Sportsman 7 vertical smoker. It really needs a PID WiFi controller, otherwise I love the plentiful space to smoke everything
@@SteveDarner Oh OK! For some reason I was thinking that you had the same unit as me. It’s all trial and error

It's a good way to add a hint of hickory without overkilling it with hickory! Great video!

Santa got me a Z Grill for Christmas and I like the "set and forget" bit but I was like "Where's the smoke?"
I use a heat gun, it's so easy. Can get a gun cheap for under 20 bucks
That’s right! Smoke on!!!
i hate to say pit boss dropped the ball on the pvb4ps2 vertical smoker. It cooks well - don't get me wrong however - there is almost no smoke flavor what so ever. You actually get more smoke flavor from the pit boss grill's instead ' The fact that to get more smoke flavor is to use a smoke tube ' says it all.
I like mine! Smoke on!!!
Smoke tube 9$, cardboard box from the hardware store 2$, 1 wooden dowel from hardware store 1$. Total price of my mobile cold smoker, 14$. 🎉🎉🎉
Nice!

What do you know about good smoke vs bad smoke???
Good smoke is what’s known as clean smoke. Light grey, light blue and sometimes even clear. Produces a light Smokey sweet flavor.
Bad smoke, or dirty smoke, is cloudy. Darker grey to black and thicker than clean smoke. Has a much higher content of soot and creosote. Droplets of other chemicals that haven’t gotten hot enough to burn up can also be found in this type of smoke. Produces a much heavier smoke flavor on the food but is typically bitter and a turn off on the pallet of most.
@@TheAmericanSmoke Thank you very much. I use a propane cooker. Are there any videos that deal with smoker tubes and good vs bad smoke? Thanks again.
@@mcconn746 th-cam.com/video/95TiO1Am-8A/w-d-xo.html
@@mcconn746 I find that the smoke tube produces mildly dirty smoke but not a detrimental amount. They effectively put more smoke flavor and color on my bbq. Most home cooks prefer to use them.
Professionals don’t care as much for them. Mad Scientist BBQ did a video a while back in this topic and he did not prefer the flavor. He is a pro though and typically uses all wood fires in a traditional stick burning pit to produce his bbq. A pellet smoker will never duplicate that type of bbq. They are just different.
I hope this helps! Come over to American Smoke Carnivores on FaceBook sometime. Smoke on!!!
@@TheAmericanSmoke That is a very interesting idea. I will try it. Thanks again.

So, I could just add like 3 tubes and smoke the hell out of whatever I’m using.
3 tubes > 1 tube
@@TheAmericanSmoke 🤔I just a had a greater idea…….4 tubes! 😳
The sky is the limit
No offense meant . Why spend a lot of money on a smoker that must have an accessory added to get it right . I will stick with my stainless 55 gallon drum grille/smoker I made 32 years ago .
It’s sort of like adding a water pan to a offset stick burner. It’s not necessary, but it makes things come out a little bit better.
Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
I would hope so very disappointed in the Pitt boss very very weak smoke flavor. It shouldn’t be called a smoker it’s a pellet oven
Pellet smokers are definitely their own breed. Definitely not a stick burner but definitely not an over. They can for sure produce delicious BBQ though.
