Really fun to watch seasoned players try and pick up new rules. This is a very complex morph of the axis and allies games, lots of neat stuff at work. Loved it!
Great video Gary! I love how clear and concise you are. I would love to know if either side had expressed any thoughts on strategy beforehand. It seemed like the Axis really didn't have a clue. Ah well, looking forward to more!
@@zacharymetzger4244the Axis strategy was to give a large bid to the Allies to get them to play Allies because in every other game up to that point the Allies had lost. The other thing worth noting after looking at the comments is that the Eastern front was irrelevant due to the time limit and number of turns that could be played. That is why you see the Axis retreating every turn. They were just trying to get to the Western theater as fast as possible while blocking along the way. (As long as blockers were in place you would need 6 turns to get to Tripoli and most games had only gone 4 rounds at that point due to everyone learning and having so many questions.)

Pre-Release tournaments for any strategy game are always a blast to watch. There is no established Meta/Best Strategy yet, just a bunch of smart people that know the genre and other games in the series trying to figure stuff out on the fly, and it's probably the most variety one will ever see in high-level competitive play - we're in the scrappy phase before everything gets polished to perfection. True for both video and board games. Thank you for covering these tournaments! I'll never be a good enough player to play them myself (and frankly, lack the interest to spend the time), but it's incredibly fun to watch expert commentary on what's going on, what strategies might be an option, why players are doing certain things, and just walking through thought processes. It's genuinely fascinating to watch.
This is an exceptional presentation! I’m not a gamer and all the moving parts of this game made my head spin a bit. Even so, I found myself engrossed in the drama and even stress of the action! The funnest thing about this video was Doug’s expressions over the ‘couldn’t hits’ of the Axis and ‘couldn’t misses’ of the Allies! Truly captures the unpredictable nature of real war. Amazing!! Great job, AGAIN, Gary!!!
Love to see more tournament play. The lack of experience with this game shows, I think any future tournaments of this edition will play out a lot differently. A lot of fun though.
Thank you for another fantastic video Gary. As always, you capture the essence of the game played, whilst generating interest in the new North Africa game and Axis and Allies line of games as a whole. I know these videos don’t make themselves, and hugely appreciate the time you take to produce what are always professional, informative and fun viewing experiences. Cheers!
One of the things this video demonstrates well is the need for the Axis to keep the Allied navy in check. They will never control the seas but need to contest them so far as they can actually land reinforcements. I too had an game where I was playing the Axis and oh boy let me tell you, once the Allies have full control over your convoys the game becomes very unpleasant for you! You really need to in the first few turns try to contest the Allied navy. Granted the Axis players here tried and got horrendous dice luck but the principle is still the same. Protect your convoys!!!
I was super hyped when I saw this come out (especially since I have not even looked at the rulebook for North Africa), but when I learned thar not only would we get videos for some of the other versions of A&A(especially global 1940!!!), and ESPECIALLY when I learned Doug would be joining you I was ecstatic! The 2023 1942 videos were phenomenal, and I'm so excited for the rest of the videos! Any chance Doug will be joining us for one or some of those?
I am absolutely pumped that tournament game recaps are back! And big thanks to TH-cam for actually putting this video in my feed. Good grief by the UK8 turn the axis had to be close to flipping the board in dice rage! 🤣 Just first impression here but I think this game could have a wide variety of viable strategies to win for both Axis & Allies. On the downside this is not a game for the more casual fan. Lots of nuances with the units/rules.
It was pretty brutal. We are have also just launched memberships! If joining is right for you, you will get early access to videos, member only chats and live streams, and more. Thanks for watching!
Yeah. I think there were a number of ways the Axis could have slowed the British advance in the east. Trying to hold or even just block in Tobruk for one round would have probably helped. Thanks for watching!
Man the Axis got streamrolled. I would of tried to make to a stand at Tobruk in the east if I were the Axis for the bonuses. The Axis were just giving away free units during that whole reteat. Also looseing two german wolfpack submarines back to back was just killer. The Axis mines also decided to sit this out, so that was just some real bad luck for the Axis. Also if I were the Americans I would invest heavily into French tanks just for the self-sufficiency feature. Like that seems to be very powerful when defending. Thanks for the video and I appreciate all the work you put into it. I rly want to play this version of the game now lol.
It definitely was a tough day for the Axis! The mines were killer. The French tanks were certainly clutch in this game, but the US can only buy one FF tank and/or infantry per turn. So, they can’t roll in with a big stack of them. Thanks for watching!
Man, the axis lost double digit IPCs more than the allies every single turn, and still almost squeaked it out. Absolutely brutal rolls. I can definitely see a strategy where Brits 'mine clear' ahead of americans, sending a few cheap subs through the mines. But being able to choose to detonate is huge too. Is there a limit to placements, per zone or turn? Great casting as always and super excited for the future matches you'll share on the channel. Always happy to see you pop up in my feed Gary :)

Also, Allies had +14, god dice, and they still barely scraped together a tournament rules win (supply issues noted)? Definitely might need a tweak to those tournament rules and/or unit placement tweaks for tourneys.
Love these vids! Last time I got absolutely engrossed in the Tournament and storyline. Could I make two requests based on the last series. Can you zoom out to show the whole board sometimes? It helps to get more of an idea of the board state, last time was a master class of the zooming in and out to make it clearer. Secondly, with combat can you set the pieces aside like you did last time and show the IPC losses. I've never played the game before watching the series so it can be very hard to follow otherwise.
Glad you enjoy them! This is the only video like this we will be making for North Africa (at least for a while). I'll keep your request in mind as we make the videos for the other A&A events this season. Thanks for watching!

1:37:05 the allies were beatable, which goes to show there is something pretty screwy with either the tournament rule or the game or both. The allies lost almost nothing the entire game, the axis lost someething like 300-400 rp's worth of units. I dont think it makes sense when the rules could very likely have axis players winning a tournament in that kind of position.
Correct. The tournament rules had brutal time limit for players unfamiliar with the rules. It looks like they completed only 5 rounds, yet the game is supposed to go 7 rounds. If there had been 1 more round, the Allies would have captured Tripoli and Tunis very easily. I would chalk this up solely to the barely-tested tournament rules and the time limit. The game hadn't released yet, so you can imagine the tournament organizers (not Renegade) had to make some guesses.
That's exactly what happened. The Tournament Organizers played the game a few times and made their best guess. I'm fairly certain that we will see something different next year. Thanks for watching!
Another great video! The complexity of the game is intimidating, but after watching your previous video and this gameplay, I hope I have an opportunity to play myself. Honestly my takeaway is mainly that the bid assessment of the differential between sides is probably pretty accurate. On top of that insane bid, the Axis had some horrific luck and made some significant strategic and tactical blunders in hindsight, although those are probably impossible to avoid in a new game like this. Despite all of that, the Allies still barely scraped our a win in the time limit. The game is probably much more balanced with unlimited time, but it seems like for tournaments it will required some pretty big setup tweaks.

Lot's of fun stuff in this game. I like how Germany is slowly being squeezed out of Africa (much like in real life). It's a survival game with them. How can I hold them off for just one more turn kind of mindset.
As always a great presentation. Love your walk throughs and thoughtful commentaries. If the game had covered the entire campaign and not just from Gazala/Torch I would buy it as I am a big North African Campaign aficionado (Bought S&Ts Panzerarmee Afrika when I was 13 and played the shit out of it). I imagine the Axis players wanting to walk away from the table a number of times to scream in frustration. Considering how badly the Axis rolling was (and the Allied rolls as well) it's amazing that the Axis almost had a chance - the US failing to properly supply their drive almost cost them the game. I do feel giving the Free French a tank at all is BS. The poor buggers had very few old French tanks (all light) and the Allies gave them very little and definitely no armour during this campaign. Pulling back from El Alamein was exactly what Rommel had wanted to do even before the battle was launched and seems to be the right tactic here. Playing this without a timer I can't see how the Axis can win unless they are incredibly lucky with their die rolls. Getting 14 RPS just made the Allies too powerful imo and its only that failure of the US to buy just 5 supply each turn that made it even close.
All fair points! Though this game comes with 2 scenarios, Romel's Last Push (starts in Round 1, no US support) and Operation Torch (used tournaments, starts in Round 7 with the arrival of the Americans). Thanks for watching!
There are three rules I found to be nonsensical. The self-sufficient French tanks, the fact that planes do not need supply to operate and the fact that hits can be applied to retreating units by the defender rather than any unit (s) that stay to do battle.

MINE! The dice roling was brutal. Such a waste to not hire out your talents in Las Vegas with such extreme rolls. I did think Italian infantry did not need supplies to defend though (or is that some special Italian unit)?
Haha! I'll let them know! French units and all air units are "Self-sufficient", meaning they don't require supplies to defend. All other land units must spend one supply per round of combat to defend. If they can't, they must retreat. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

The fact that the Axis came as close as they did to winning even with the most insanely bad luck that they had, just proves just how horrible this game is balanced. Maybe it's because the tournament rules hurt the game the most but damn that's just crazy. I can see why the bidding went as hard as it did to get them.
So... three things. First, again, everyone was just learning the game. There were lots of ways the Axis could have slowed the Allied advances that they missed... not because they were bad players... just because it was a brand new, really complicated game. Second, the tournament rules definitely need some tweaking. (I'm in favor of taking the play time to 5 hrs and staying closer to the OTB rules.) Finally, finding the bid in tournaments that doesn't sway the game so heavily takes lots of iterations. So, yes. This game was a big win for Allies, but it is only one game in a very specific and unusual set of circumstances. I wouldn't read too much into the actual balance of the game from this single example. Thanks for watching!
@@BoardGameNation Even if everyone is figuring it out that just sort of levels the playing field both ways making it sort of a mute point. The real question is how can the game be balanced with such a close number of ways to win when the Axis had horrible dice the whole game... I personally would have to see more gameplay before I bought it.
@@BlackSmithWolves It looks like this tournament game went for only 4-5 rounds due to the crazy time limit for brand new players unfamiliar with the rules. The normal game rules would have the game last at least 2 more rounds. The Axis would have been crushed instantly if the game had gone for even 1 more round. So the only reason the Axis had a chance was due to the tournament rules that didn't allow for a full game.
Started to watch this video but can't help: did Renegade change the ridiculously tiny jeeps pieces? I was going to buy it on Amazon but decided to wait until the game is fixed. Any updates? Thank you.
The scout car wasn't much a factor in the game in this video, but I haven't heard anything from Renegade about any updates to the UK Scout Car pieces. I think I saw that a third-party vendor has started offering something. Thanks for watching!
Off topic, but I had a rules question and I wasn’t sure where to ask, and I trust you guys board game nation. 1942 2nd edition, out of box set up, Japan 1, Pearl Harbor attack. Say I bring everything that can make it, and the bomber & fighter fly through sea zone 57. Could the fleet retreat to sea zone 57 because two of the units (the bomber and the fighter) attacked from that sea zone? The rule book says attacking units can retreat to a sea zone where one of the “land or sea units” came from. So would it have to be just SZ 44 or 52 (assuming the carrier from 50 came through 52.)? If retreating to 57 were allowed, that would allow Japan to concentrate a big fleet (move the BB, DD, and transport over to join what’s left of the Pearl Harbor force. The fighter from Manchuria can even make it to 57 if you attack buryatia with it. So you can take a fighter casualty if needed.) off the coast of western U.S. and fork San fransisco and Hawai’i. Though the threat to San Francisco is easily delt with by building, it places Japan to take Hawai’i on turn 2 if you bring a transport from Japan. Taking Hawai’i on turn 2 might be risky for Japan depending on how much fleet the US decides to build in the pacific, especially if they go with at least two carriers like you did in your tournament game with the Thorp Thump. But it’s a threat the US has to deal with somehow or loose san fransisco. Follow up question in the same Pearl Harbor attack scenario: would the fighter from Japan be able to retreat with the fleet and land on the carrier? I don’t think so since aircraft retreat durring non-combat move, and that would require a 5th move. So to make this fleet idea work you almost have to take that fighter as a casualty otherwise you have to leave your carrier in 53 by Hawai’i to catch the fighter from Japan.
Follow up to the follow up🤣🤣 could the same thing be accomplished by retreating to SZ 52, by wake island? You are still forking SF and Hawai’i, and even Alaska if you wanted, as well as positioning your fleet closer to your money islands… so is that the better option?
Most of this can be cleared up by recognizing that air units don't retreat the same way land and sea units do. When retreating, air units are removed from the combat, but don't leave the space. During non-combat, they use any remaining movement to find a safe place to land (if able). You might find or full how-to-play video for 1942 Second Edition useful. This link will take you directly to the section laying out the rules for air units. th-cam.com/video/IKyWaC0vrtM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=M33pOFaNxV7LrcXC&t=1899 I hope this helps! Nice video! For my part, the Allies tend to win this game a lot, as the Axis really rely on mines, and if the dice go cold...uh-oh. Bombing Malta is key, so if that doesn't go well, the Allies simply get too rich and powerful.
You can place one sea mine, per sea zone, per turn. So, the UK can place one in a sea zone, the US can place another one in the same sea zone, the UK could place a third on their next turn. No problem. But, no more than one mine, per sea zone, per turn. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Really well played by the allies, but concerning how despite the total domination it came down to the wire, how much 'waste' would you say happened due to the inexperience in regards to time?
Quite a bit. If everyone was playing at pace, this game would have almost certainly ended in a clean sweep of the Axis. Again, as we said, everyone was just learning. I shared this game, not because of its strategic brilliance, but more of a starting point for the conversation about effective and ineffective strategies for this game. Thanks for watching!
I was there. Most only went 4 rounds as everyone was learning. This was the only game the Axis lost in the tournament (hence the huge bid gap) and to my knowledge the only North Africa game that even made it to 5 rounds.
That all sounds about right. I am going to suggest to Greg that the game be allowed to run 5 hours and the win conditions stay closer to the OTB rules. Thanks for chiming in! I think that making illegal moves from turn 1 (placing several sea mines) and those actions actually having extremely significant impact at the sea battle in zone 2 the entire session should be declared invalid and replayed. Also there isn't much thrill when one of the powers got 20 out of 25 unlike hits with like 30% hit chance and basically destroy half of the combat potential of the Axis with almost 0 losses. And also seeming that the Axis players are not quite sure how this scenario is played it is more than enough to end it all in basically 2 Rounds.
I see your point, but the US could have also purchased and placed a mine in sea zone before the Germans first turn. So, it could have gone either way. Also, as we said, everyone was just learning this game. I shared it, not because it was genius play, but because it was a good starting place for the strategic conversation. Thanks for watching!

Right off the bat I do not like the game because of the supply point marker issue and it takes this game from being a Beer & Pretzels level game into a far more cumbersome level of a game that does not lend itself well as an "Introductory" type of wargame, not to mention that the shape of the supply counters will gain more wear & tear issues based on their stupid shape and the corners will wear off. Considering the scale of the game and using Area Zones, why is there any stacking limits? Supply line rules vs. Supply counters would have just been a far better and would help keep the game board less clutter and far easier to teach someone new as well as encompass faster game play. The lack of "Damaged" Counters for Naval units and having to flip your BB on its side when so many other cheap cardboard counters have been provided in this game is just cheesy as heck and a poor design. Other poor designs include how Ports are treated "or not included" such as Tobruk. And how do you deploy Ftr's in a SZ without an Aircraft Carrier is beyond me? I had to stop watching after 40-mins and I do not see this as a viable wargame in any sense of the word, it is just a hod podge aka Ad-Hoc scramble of rules that takes a good easy to learn beer & pretzel game and try to turn it into a real wargame that you can't teach 1st time players with. I would choose the latter vs. this crap. 👎💯
I appreciate your thoughts, and I think we can all agree that this game is not designed as any kind of introductory tool for the broader wargaming category. Thanks for watching!
I agree with SugarMC. I have been playing since the OG release in 1984 and have thoroughly enjoyed the upgrades and add-ons over the years. However, even when considering the combined games of Europe and Pacific 1940 which were each immense alone with several play through's to learn the expanded additions when combined, this game nearly doubles that. With that said, if the developers knew they needed to expand the original A&A rule set (to keep up with competitors) with more features, rules and complexity, they knocked it out of the park. This game still retains some of the A&A feel, but adds 100% more complexity IMO. Taking SugarMC's description "Its no longer a beer and pretzels game" that one can easily learn and play in a single afternoon. Even though the OG game and expansions were easy to learn but hard to master compared with this release, I am looking forward to the new direction of the franchise as long as it allows for significant return on investment (time, money and overall enjoyment). I'd hate to buy they game, play it once or twice and then have the box just gather dust for umpteen years... Big fan of the channel, and I appreciate the time and effort this took to put together, please continue with any and all A&A reviews.
This is not crap. After learning the rules and actually playing it, it's pretty darn good. It's different while retaining the Axis and Allies feel. Hopefully, you may change your opinion one day.

This has to be the most one-sided game i have ever witnessed
It was a rough one for the Allies. Thanks for watching!
Good grief by the UK8 turn the axis had to be close to flipping the board in dice rage! 🤣
Just first impression here but I think this game could have a wide variety of viable strategies to win for both Axis & Allies. On the downside this is not a game for the more casual fan. Lots of nuances with the units/rules.
Haha! Probably!
Absolutely right! Lots of deep rules and strategic options.
Thanks for watching!
Super excited for the new tournaments to come out! I can't believe the axis got completely obliterated, their luck was the worst I've ever seen.

Giving up Tobruk seemed like an early mistake, since they just kept rolling westward
Great video as always my friend. Looking forward to the upcoming ones. See you then!
Thanks Brother!
It was a really interesting game. Thanks for watching!

Also, Allies had +14, god dice, and they still barely scraped together a tournament rules win (supply issues noted)? Definitely might need a tweak to those tournament rules and/or unit placement tweaks for tourneys.
We discussed this in last night's live stream. Check it out.
Thanks for watching!
Another great game replay, love the way you present it Gary….and love Doug’s color commentary 😊 Thank you guys!

Great to see this series again.
Global is just around the corner! :)
A very fair assessment. Thanks for watching!

When are you going to show your Anniversary Edition tournament play?
Those will be coming in January. Stay tuned!
Thanks for watching!
I am so hyped 🎉🎉🎉🎉
So are we! Thanks for watching!
Lot's of fun stuff in this game. I like how Germany is slowly being squeezed out of Africa (much like in real life). It's a survival game with them. How can I hold them off for just one more turn kind of mindset.
Definitely has that feel.
Thanks for watching!
The hits being assigned to retreating units, I get, but the other two are a little harder to understand why.
Thanks for watching!

Italy on 8. Attacking sea zone 8 definitely felt like a desperation move.

This is the first Axis & Allies game were the French actually have a chance.

@ I will have to check it out!
@ Could you guys to the global tournament next?
The fact that the Axis came as close as they did to winning even with the most insanely bad luck that they had, just proves just how horrible this game is balanced. Maybe it's because the tournament rules hurt the game the most but damn that's just crazy. I can see why the bidding went as hard as it did to get them.
It's 100% the tournament rules.
So... three things.
I think the tournament rules played a big part, but see my reply to OP.

Nice video! For my part, the Allies tend to win this game a lot, as the Axis really rely on mines, and if the dice go cold...uh-oh.
Bombing Malta is key, so if that doesn't go well, the Allies simply get too rich and powerful.
Certainly a fair assessment. Thanks for watching!
Hey! Message me on Facebook. Love to discuss a collaboration!
I see 2x mines in several sea zones (12 and 15) .....despite it being 'illegal' ?

I would actually suggest just letting the entire scenario play out. Unlike the other A&A games this one has a set expiration.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! More A&A content on the way!
This is not crap. After learning the rules and actually playing it, it's pretty darn good. It's different while retaining the Axis and Allies feel. Hopefully, you may change your opinion one day.
