- In this special report, we investigate how hundreds of villages in Uttarakhand have been turned into 'ghost' villages following mass migration of residents towards greener pastures. NDTV visits some of the remote regions of Pauri Garhwal where we find there are villages which house barely a dozen or less people, mainly senior citizens. Senior journalist Arvind Mudgal says that villagers in Uttarakhand find it difficult to sustain a livelihood using traditional methods of farming and are slowly abandoning the profession. When uttarakhand was in U.P., the fund alotted to this region was not spent here. Two C. M. were from Uttarakhand during U. P. they didn't do anything for here. At that time a newly recriuted J E from Lucknow came with a Steel box and folded cot, but when he transferred to U. P. he returned with full truck of luggage and with lot of bank balance.

This video is thought-provoking. 3 to 4 decades ago, Konkan region of Maharashtra also faced similar situation. Almost all young people migrated to Mumbai/Pune leaving only old people at villages. Half of the houses in every village were locked. Agriculture was unviable due to small land holdings and water shortage. Situation started changing for good after a competent leader of Shivsena, namely Narayan Rane, was made the CM of the State during Shivsena-BJP government. Majority of people of Konkan traditionally support Shivsena due to influence of young generation settled in Mumbai. Once the process of development was set into motion, there was total turn-around even though Rane later on left Shivsena and joined Congress. Now there is reverse migration from big cities to Konkan towns like Kankavli, Kudal, Malvan, Sawantwadi, Vengurla etc. and to smaller villages. Konkan has now excellent roads and tourism is fast developing. There is 50 fold increase in land prices. Migration from Konkan villages/towns to Mumbai is almost stopped.

उत्तराखंड के गांवों में पलायन तो हो ही रहा है लेकिन गांवों के खाली होने की वजह वो लोग भी हैं जिन्होंने सक्षम होते हुए भी अपनी जन्म भूमि को धोखा दिया है। वो लोग जहाँ भी रहेंगे दुःखी रहेंगे। देव भूमि के तिरिस्कार की सजा उन की आने वाली पीढ़ियों को अवश्य भुगतना पड़ेगा।

Extremely disheartening and sorry state of our village!! Wish someone sensible from Govt is also watching. Youths are leaving villages for petty jobs. The existing uttrakhand govt should invite and incentivize industrialists to set up small scale industries. Else make Yogi as CM in next uttrakhand election..matribhumi ka karj UP ka CM ban kar utar diya.. ab devbhumi ka bhi utaarna he apko!!

well this is normal migration pattern,where people migrate to cities for better oppurtunities while older people who want the older way of life stay back and let the young move on......But its also a fact that places where the muslim community is more than other communities,they soon become aggressive and take over the entire village.this is seen in the outer villages of west bengal and illegal immigration of muslims from bangladesh is only adding to the problem.......

They are not only taking over empty and near empty villages,they also get ration card with photos,aadhar card, small pieces of lands for agriculture,given loans for small business includng shops,are allowed to build mosques for worship with an allowance for monthly maintainance as well [and we all know what happens there]....
now the rohingyas, that is a different problem.after being driven out from burma[that too by buddhist monks,I wonder what these guys did to make those peaceful monks turn that violent],they came to neighbouring bangladesh, from there they saw that w.bengal govt was giving free open borders ,into india with all the aid and facilities ,came in and know what most of them went up till kashmir and settled there.recently a ghetto full of rohingyas,living deceitfully as refugees from POK,were identified and sent back by the central govt,after a report on that became public..the rohingyas wouldn't allow anyone else to come to that area.no officials could go in and come out safely,to assess who they were,what did they need,their health,the kids education etc.that is what raised the red flag and then it was discovered they had used this route to come into india illegally.
