I loved this movie because Junior realized by the end of the movie that even though the world can be cruel, and that it can harden us to become cruel, some people come into our life and show us that we can be loved and are capable of being loveable despite how damaged we appear to others.

This movie meant a lot to me when I was little. I was adopted, and I look nothing like my parents. My parents only had two criteria for the child they wanted to adopt; black hair and dark eyes, either brown or 'black'. They wanted these traits to contrast the first child they adopted; my sister who is an aryan. The overarching theme of the movie is that the father character, Ben, goes out of his way to work with Junior to try and make a good life for the both of them. Ben wants to be a family man, and he wants Junior to have a happy, safe, and supportive home life. And even though Junior repeatedly acts out, Ben constantly plays a caring parent, forgives, and tries to put Junior onto a better life path; he does NOT take Junior back.
When I was in elementary school, I often acted out, in part because other students bullied me for looking different from the rest of my family, using the fact that I was adopted to make fun of me. When my mother came to pick me up during an incident, one of the staff told her, "You know, it's not too late to take her back." My mother was so livid, when the year was over, I was taken out of the school, and enrolled in a different one on the other side of town. It was much farther away, but to her, it was worth it to not have to deal with staff who would say those things about her child.

By 1990, John Ritter was a very well-known actor ( certainly in the U.S.), so the hesitancy to cast him because of his supposed lack of fame doesn't really make sense. It would seem more likely that the studio wanted a more currently hot actor, as Ritter had not been in any major film of TV show for years at that point.

The ending of the film, when shown on TV, is different than its theatrical cut. In the theatrical cut, when the wife ends up in the back of the truck with the pig, it cuts to a shot of her staring at the pig's balls...in the TV edit, it cuts to a shot of her staring at the pig's snout.

I've always found it funny that Amy Yasbeck makes a return in the sequel as a friendly love interest; a character the complete opposite of her role in the first. Something worth noting if you happen to cover that one.
Also, I'd also recommend covering Stay Tuned, another Ritter vehicle from the early 90's that critics trashed but had some effective commentary on people's obsession with TV and media.

I love this movie still... Jnr wasn’t an evil kid, from birth he was dumped over and over again , never really loved by anyone. He developed coping techniques that made him feel better, his smart ass comment s and finding humour in everything were just his way of coping and expressing himself. A lot of kids will do that in that same situation, when they don’t trust they act out and if people love them anyway they have this sense of safety in that person. And the dad was such a push over, he needed someone like Jnr in his life. Together they helped each other learn to have both traits a perfect match for father and son. This movie has so many levels and if you’ve worked with kids with this kind of background you’d understand. I thought the kid was hilarious and most of those jerks deserved what they got. Maybe not that far lol but they were all asshole and Jnr could see right through it. And he could tell that his Dad was a good guy.
