In the post 9/11 version the fight should have been in the Empire State building so they could keep the "Top of the world" thing.
That actually could have been a good alternative, but it might have required more programming work. This fix was simply a re-skin and an added bridge.

GameRaveTV they wouldn’t have to fit the “top of the world” line and wouldn’t have to change of textures if they just added the Empire State Building.
The top of the world thing only makes sense with the World Trade Center because when you’d visit the observation deck they’d call it “being on top of the WORLD” because you’re on top of the World Trade Center and you’re at the highest spot of the city.

James Cameron is a good director, but a good director doesn’t automatically mean the movie is gonna be good. Otherwise, the Star Wars prequels would’ve been good, and Stephen Spielberg wouldn’t have fucked up the 4th Indiana Jones movie.

ComicWriter 2020 I think the prequels have a found a lot of appreciation as of recently. Especially from the kids now young adults who grew up with them.

What sucks was I had the 9/11 version when I was a kid. One Christmas, my brothers and I got a shoe box filled with bootleg versions of PS1 games from Indonesia, and that version was one of them. Parents ended up getting rid of those games when I turned 13
I got to play the pre-9/11 one, too! And in my memory, the buildings were much further appart. Here in Brazil, the PS1 and PS2 were only the most popular consoles of their respective eras due to how easy it was to pirate their games. In fact, Playstation's capilarity as a brand here to this day is mostly due to it, to piracy XD

my parents separated when I was 12 and I only got past it in my early 20's. Other than that, I really miss the games I played in my old PS1. Some of them were lost, some of them were rendered useless due to how much I played them, 5 of them were stolen and resold by a then classmate of mine (and to this day I regret borrowing them to him, but was never brave enough to bring it up as this guy was taller than me and I was a very insecure child). and the cut scene where spidey sneaking henchman when plane goes blow up and henchman said "everybody get down" was removed
also different when you play save the plane in pre 9/11 they teach you how to stop the plane but in post 9/11 they didn't tell you what to do
to much bug in post 9/11 even you in building you suddenly felt down

Thank you so so much for making this video! I think it's so important to keep something like this alive, especially because we no longer have the twin towers with us. I understand it was censored at the time out of respect for the victims, but if you ask me, I think it's more disrespectful now-a-days to pretend that it never happened to begin with. History is always best remembered, not forgotten. I think it would be cool if they could somehow find a way to re-release the original version.
Man I always thought the final duel taking place on top of the twin towers made it so much more epic.
I was just taking a trip down memory lane watching the game cutscenes and man, such a simple yet great story. By the time I got the the scene of “Top of the World” and I noticed the screen goes black, and I was like “WAIT, I clearly remember that the scene played a clip where you can see Electro on top of the towers” and I started watching different videos and all the ones I could find on youtube are the same. Yet, I knew I was right! So I finally found this video. So glad to know I was right haha and yeah, it’s kinda sad. But I did honestly prefereed the original version

Hey guys. There IS a scene with Spiderman & Thor talking right after beating Hyper Electro. It does exists. It never made it into any version, but I saw it once on Activision's webpage back in the day. I'm trying to find it. Any help is appreciated so we can all enjoy this missing gem!

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro now affected with the 9/11 Terror, where the final battle was originally take place in the World Trade Center, but later changed into generic building in the final build of the game. A similar method also occurred to Disney and Pixar film Monsters, Inc., where the CDA (Child Detection Agency) blew up Harryhausen's in the storyboard and comic book. However, it was later changed into the CDA placing a force field against the restaurant in the finalized version of the film due to the aforementioned 9/11 Terror.
Don’t forget Lilo & Stitch and Men in Black 2.

@@서경현-l2b The scene spaceship chase scene in Lilo and Stich originally featured an airplane and took place in a busy city. It starts with the main characters hijacking a 747. Jumba flies the plane recklessly. It's a turbulent ride in which you see everyone aboard the plane frantically bracing themselves for impact as they whiz through skyscrapers. The plane hits a building at one point. The animators transformed the plane into a spaceship and had it fly over trees in a tropical area. The imagery is eerily similar.

They are out there, but usually in collector's hands.
You can download the August 2001 Proto from Hidden Palace or you can just find it online and you could probabaly burn the .iso file

Hey Brik - not much. I know of at least 3 people, myself included, who paid $100 or less for theirs. Considering how minimal the changes are and the rom being available if you look, there really wasn't any ludicrous value associated with it.

Damn, I think I played the Pre 9/11 version then. My memory of when I played the game is always fuzzy, but I cannot believe that these games came very close to the Spiderman movie. It felt like I played the games about 3-4 years prior to the movie and the tying game, but I guess this is how it feels remembering growing up.

I know this was for gameplay wise, but the towers weren't that close to each other like in the game.
They had to be because of how web swinging works. And they outright stated that it's supposed to be trading centre. Imagine trying to release a game when the disaster occurred. Changing the name wouldn't cut it: The wound is too fresh.

Cara eu nem fazia ideia que a versão censurada tinham as torres juntas. Eu joguei com elas separadas, e lembro ainda da cutscene das torres.
Did the original versions actually make it to circulation? Or did people just mess with the files to get this original version? Been trying to find a original copy but can't find any, could also be that the people selling them aren't checking which copy they are selling so hard to know what you're getting.
Thanks for the question! There seem to be mixed answers to that. In an interview with I think IGN, an Activision representative said they had pulled all copies from the production line. Some folks have claimed they had it. It's possible that like the Syphon Filter variant, some got to distribution warehouses and missed the recall. That select few would have made it out.
As for sellers, I can guarantee 99% of sellers don't know about it from a non-collector angle. That's not a bad thing; we're just the minority. Thankfully it seems the value hasn't spiked - It's been relatively super cheap to buy when it exchanges hands. Most probably feel the few seconds and some text changes don't warrant the hype and search.

@@mr.pendleton7121 I had a bootleg version that bundled 1 and 2 together (they did it by cutting out all CGI cutscenes) and the version of 2 had WTC. So somehow pre 9/11 version was more widespread in bootleg circles.
It’s kinda curious that the final battle for the James Cameron’s Spider-Man film was gonna take place on the World Trade Center, I guess Neversoft tried to reuse this idea for the game
The original movie trailer having the helicopter stuck between the towers via Spidey's webbing was also in play. Just a huge landmark to use in a huge property.

As a kid, I hated that they used that obvious stock music track for the cut scene.
Still can't believe that they made the twin towers into a final boss arena. Especially the cutscene shot of it when Spiderman knew where Electro was going.

I do not like that to consider that 9/11 happened and I get the reason it was altered but, I liked the original version of this game better. The idea that you are on top of the tallest towers made clear sense and real vibe to a final battle. It also made the game more difficult.
I wish that 9/11 did not ruin the gameplay and make everything quite meh. Hopefully the structural idea of twin towers as a structural design gets ruined over 9/11 and things settle down after a few decades although there are no guarantees. Hopefully all terrorism get eradicated soon in the Middle East.
Sadly terrorism is home grown as well. Theodore John Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh, Robert E. Chambliss, and more are all in the same boat as those who attacked the Towers. For some people, regardless of race or sex, violence is the only way they know how to act. Considering the history of humanity, it doesn't seem like violence will ever be itself history.
@@GameRaveTV I understand and I am aware of such tragedies. However, like I said before I liked the original version of the game better and we should learn from 9/11 but we should not dwell on it. Yes, a new enemy will come and we can't eradicate terrorism or violence. We can believe in the good of ourselves and not stereotype the idea of twin towers being related to 9/11. Next time something traumatic occurs, I hope they sell the new version until the fear dies down at some point.
Although this game got medium rankings by critics, I bet that if they remake the game and did not censor out the final battle and ending (though I could understand if they kept some of the other areas of censorship) it could get better reviews. I know they wont do it but still, showing the twin towers before the destruction is something that is mostly irrelevant to 9/11. If it depicted the towers getting bombed then yes it should stay censored.

The towers were a national symbol, almost used extensively to know you were in New York when watching various media. Ironically, the original Toby McGuire Spider-Man's first trailer even featured him web-slinging a helicopter between the two towers. It would be like someone destroying the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, or even Mount Rushmore.
Besides its symbolism, it was also a major business hub for a lot of people, agencies, and companies. I believe a major emergency command center had been moved there as well after previous attacks.

9/11 also affected some of the level names, "Crash Flight" became "Wind Tunnel", "Downward Spiral" became "The Corkscrew", "Aces High" became "The Gauntlet", and the final battle was changed from "Top Of The World" to "The Best Laid Plans". All these to avoid any references about The Twin Tower, the plane crashed against it and all victims who commited suicide by jumping down the building.
Yep, that's pointed out in the video - the titles are dotted with yellow highlight - I failed to mention to look for that in the video. :)

Syphon Filter 3 experienced similar things.
1. The original cover art was Gabe and Lian enganged in a gunfight against unseen enemies, surrounded by gas. Due to anthrax scare, SONY pulled back all the game disc which had not been sold and alter the cover into close-up face of Gabe and Lian.
2. One of the hardest levels in this game involving you surviving barrages of attacks from Afghanisan rebels (obvious reference toward Mujahideen, but SONY simply called them as Afghan Rebels).
3. Weird enough, two player mode, you can choose to play in Afghanistan and there will be memoir about Afghan rebel leader encouraging his people to do Jihad by chasing foreigners out of their land or die trying.
4. *This is not confirmed* But there is a rumor that in no.2 you are supposed to met/interact/kill/spy on Young Osama in Afghanistan and perhaps SONY changed it to avoid unwanted reactions.
I actually own both, and while I was aware off all the visual changes (the cover art, the edits to the manuals, etc) this is the first I recall hearing there were actual in game changes. I'll have to check this out and eventually do a video on it. Thanks for the heads up!

the gameplay changes are rumor and no one confirmed it yet. With Syphon Filter series dead, no one from SONY would bother to confirm it.

I just launched the game for the first time in years. I was going off memory when I made my initial comment, and I was certain that I had Aces High and Crash Flight. It must've been a mandela effect thing or something because this is not how I remember it, but I do indeed have the post-9/11 version.

I remembered playing The Fixed Version in 2002 (bought the original disc but lost it after I sold my PS1) and also Pre 9/11 version in 2013 (I downloaded the pirated version and played it with emulator, couldn't find the original disc of Pre 9/11 in any game store in my town)

I still don't understand the logic behind these decisions. I get that people might be adverse to seeing depictions of the WTC right after the tragedy, but erasing any mention of it seems like the wrong way to go about it.
It’s probably more from a monetary standpoint. In current day, TH-camrs are usually shunned and criticized if they monetize a video about a dead person or tragedy after it happened.
At the time, from an affected person’s point of view something like Spider-man would have come across as, “Hey, we know you lost your loved one, but for $40 you can see men in pajamas duke it out on their grave!”
I was an hour outside of D.C. when it happened, and my then girlfriend had a friend who was across the street from the WTC. Her friend is still not the same, and her brother lost a friend in the towers. I can say unapologetically that it was the right move at the time to remove it.
How can you tell if you own the original version of the game only by looking at the disc?
You can't, sadly. Easiest way is to toss it into a system, enter AUNTMAY as your password to unlock everything, and then look at the name of the last stage. The discs look identical otherwise.
It would’ve been so much cooler had they kept The Original World Trade Center Boss Fight! (Not saying the game wasn’t goo!)

Yes - though it is kind of a pain. There seems to be a decent number of copies that made it out. But the only way to confirm it is to either look at the files on a PC, or do the AUNTMAY password and check the level names.
If you don't need a physical copy, the game was properly dumped and can be found on everyone's favorite archive : )

So I actually was able to buy a pre 9/11 copy. I bought it online before it was in stores, from ebay. Later they stopped the shipment to make the edit. So I played the game like a month before it went on sale. The most glaring difference is one you didn't mention. The pre 9/11 copy has a final cut scene that sees Thor arrive on top the World Trade Tower to chat w/Spidey for a bit. In the post 9/11 copy Thor is removed, the only reference to him is the final Daily Bugle paper Spidey is seen reading before the credits, where he mentions that Thor took all the credit. It seemed like a random reference to most people, but Thor was actually originally in the game.

Hello! If you mean actual physical version, more than likely yes, but the seller would have to know what they have.
The ISO was released a while back, so If you have an emulator, you can do it that way as well. The changes are so minimal the real version shouldn't be worth that much. I think I paid under $100 for mine a while back.
Is the only real way to find the original just looking for black label versions and hoping for the best or is there any other note?

The discs are 100% same visually. Unless you toss the disc into a PSX and type in AUNTMAY as the password so you can quickly see the Level names, the only other way is to toss the disc into a PC / Mac and check the SLUS / SCUS file dates. The 9/11 version will have it's date somewhere in August, where the fixed version will be somewhere in September.

The pre-11s version is the original one, and is better. The fixed version is censored a lot.

There would most likely have been backlash from a respect standpoint as well as calls for boycotting Activision's products. If the game was advertised or reviewed as having the boss fight where thousands of people died, it would have been seen as trying to financially capitalize on a tragic event and their deaths.

You know the developers were low key pissed off that they had to pull the pre 9/11 copies off the shelves just to tweak the last mission and redistribute it back. Probably cost them a bunch of money out of pocket
They more than made up for it in public opinion and approval. Back when Activision still had some of their soul left.

No, sadly. The disc art is 100% the same. The only way to tell the difference is to toss the disc into a PC and look at the SLUS file date, or type in "AuntMay" as the password to see the level select stage names.
This is one of those variants where someone would need to know they have it by playing, rather then looking.

Spiderman had a lot going on with the twin towers back in the 2000, afeccting not only this videogame but the first raimi movie too. Its a shame that trageddy just happened, so sad.

It's more of a polite respect angle. Selling the game with the content could be viewed as exploiting and profiting off the hysteria of the tragedy.
