Wow, my 1st Zappa Album was Sheik Yerbouti. It was 1991 and I was 20 years old. I had heard everything musically that was available at the time and Frank was my escape from the mainstream Eagles zeppelin and Floyd. I eventually had all 60 albums and just like Ruth I tried converting all my friends. Thank you all for this amazing video. All of you were such an important part of my life and the shaping of who I became. Every single Zappa band member has influenced me in their own unique way.
It was love at first listen for me, then at first sight. My Dad was a big jazz fan, and I'd grown to love trombone and xylo, vibes, etc. through our Sunday listening sessions and whatever turned up on TV. So the records, 200 Motels at an underground cinema in '73, I've been lost since.
@@damonhines8187 So understand Damon. Your Dad sounds really great. I was also lucky to have had a wonderful dad , who played drums (who loved to listen to Sousa, Dixieland and Armstrong) and I never looked back.
Great Show, had no Idea the Influence of Mahavishnu and Cobham had on Zappa and the Band members. Birds of Fire and Total Eclipse are prime examples of Cobham... I purchased LP's from all mentioned above in the 70's, great music that needs to be shared again...
I saw Chad playing with Frank "in the round" and the revolving stage broke with his back to me. Really appreciated all of Franks drummers a little more after that show.
@@ThisIsTheMajor It was in Cleveland at a small place called The Front Row Theater. Very cool place. Saw George Carlin, Redd Foxx, Cheech and Chong, Al DiMiola with Jan Hammer, and probably a bunch I can't remember. Smallest place I ever saw Frank play.
'Zapped' twice in the 80's.. Master Holdsworth flew me across the States to audition first at Charvel guitar company with Jeff B and secondly in his basement with Jimmy J.. When finishing up audition one Chad walks in with his cymbal bag having just recently leaving Zappa and just before the second audition Allan played a tape of a guy named Vinnie which had just arrived at his house.. Surprisingly I never felt any regret or sadness but instead I felt a sense of deep gratitude which remains today.. Thank you for this wonderful hour.
A common problem with a lot of documentaries is that the people who can't be there get forgotten or not represented properly. Thankfully true zappa fans will make sure vinnie is acknowledged in the comments.
I was at a mother's day concert at Cobo hall in Detroit. Mahvishnu opened for Zappa. I had never seen either. John M and company blew me away. I remember thinking, if M. Orchestra was that good live, Zappa must be unbelievable, and they didn't disappoint!
I listened to this mahavishu whatever, and they had nothing but noise, y'all have something else which no other band had, talent , I've been a Zappa listener for 40+ years, never looked at music the same way ever since
My Fantasy Instrumental "Zappa Drummers Tour", Set List: -Oh no/Orange county -RDNZL -Black Napkins -Blessed Relief -G-Spot Tornado (ruth solo) -chrome Plated Megaphone - outside now -Chunga's Revenge -Black page #1 & 2 -Rat Tomago (Ruth/Terry) -Sinister Footware II/III -King Kong -Touble Everyday -Inca Rhodes (finale) (Ruth on lead melodies with Terry, Chad, Ralph & Chester) Fantasies can come true. One show recorded live & Released for the masses! (Can I get one back stage pass for coming up with set list? 😅)
Seems Very Incomplete without even speaking of the amazing legacy left by VINNIE COLAIUTA, who lifted the level of the music more than any drummer before or since.
Yeah, and Zappa just compressed Vinnie's drums away on Joe's Garage. The horror! Like it was meant as a backing tape of Frank's "imaginary guitar solos" (his own words). It was Zappa's last call to fame. Subsequently, Zappa completely lost it in the 80s. He "rearranged" some of his old work for CD. Erasing tracks and recording them "even better". He decided, at some point, to be the sole creator of his work. Introducing the Synclavier (first buyer). A funny joke which indeed, unfortunately, destroyed his carefully crafted ego-legacy on the spot. His sense of humor got hopelessly outdated. Do I need to say more? He figured out that it was easier to pay the Mothers ($12M, but he "settled" with the poor suckers), then to pay the London Symphony Orchestra. Little wonder. But it was too late. The audience did not buy it and Frank jumped eventually, probably out of sheer despair, on the lap of the first politician who he could find. "I smell a rat!" AKA "Have a cigar!"
Totally agree. Got a chance to see Aynsley Dunbar playing at a Zappa concert. I was standing fairly close behind the stage watching AD play and was in awe.
Dunno what possessed me to watch this, but boy oh boy, oh joy! Almost everything I listen to these days starts the waterworks: it hardly seems fair that a bunch of (beautiful) geezers sitting rhapsodizing about the - admittedly extraordinary - old days should do the same.
I was at the concert at Winterland in CA. around 1970 or so, I don't remember exactly, when Mahavishnu opened for Zappa and she's right, they blew the doors off the place. The audience, including me, were absolutely stunned. I've never experienced anything like again; they wailed, non stop for what seemed like hours.
I found it interesting when they talked about the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I saw Mahavishnu live about that time and it was an eye opening experience. Music was so complex and good back in those days. What the hell happened??
Great vid. Been a big fan of his since the very beginning. Haven't heard or seen any of his ex bandmates do interviews before, although I'll admit, I've always been a little curious about Ruth. Im a fan of all these these drummers too. Saw Zappa a few times. What a vast legacy! His epic music & historic free speech advocacy are underrated. Incredible human being. Legend!

miss u terry B. its bryan from ventura, sorry i never called u bro, i feel bad about still today.... miss u man , hope everythings great....u prob dont remember me but its all good.
I believe Ruth nailed it (whether she meant to or not; I'm guessing not...) when she said, "and there's this machine onstage"- referring to Mahavishnu Orkester. A machine ? An apt description of their output, if you ask me. Too mechical for my tastes. Whereas FZ's music could swing & have "color", either in excellent melodies or in humor ? Orkester de la friggin' Mahavishnu lacks any of that, any soul at all. Indeed, Ruth- a machine. Not of Kraftwerk type of quality or Devo- not at all that type of machine/mechanical sound. Yes, they were tops, that Orkester, as players. But the whole was less than the sum of the parts- see what I did there ? 🤓 Don't like d'Orkester for that reason. Never did, never will. Unless I wanna hear someone blaze on a out of tune guitar- then Orkester's the go to..... lol. The Mothers & FZ never had anything to worry about, and funny to hear now about the perceived "threat" when working those double-bill shows. This was great, I truly enjoyed this segment so thanks a million for producing it ❣❣❣ 🚬😎
Love all these drummers BUT Ruth had to get her "attention fix" she just hogged the time and wouldn't stop I would splice some of her rhetoric out and focus on the real players the drummers maybe get Chad to speak a little more
I hope you guys at least tried to get Vinnie. This is like the '27 Yankees without Ruth or Gehrig. In all seriousness, I assume it was a scheduling conflict or something similar. Great video though, even without him.
@DivineGrinder here’s what I appreciate about your comment - there was clearly a big hole in the lineup but you didn’t just assume negativity and make it a toxic thread. Your comment left it open that there could have been something you didn’t know, like a schedule conflict, so judgment on the people there and this video wasn’t made. We need more people like you in the world, willing to ask questions without pronouncing judgment on people.
Ruth Underwood, what a charming lady!
I was fortunate enough to have met Chester back in 81-82 on Phil Collins first solo tour
55 mins of Chad smiling supportively at other people’s stories.
