RRR - The Epic Indian Action Movie That Goes ALL-IN on EVERYTHING

  • RRR (Rise, Roar and Revolt) is a brand-new Indian movie that has Katie VERY enthusiastic because of the insane action, the crazy high energy and the men’s fashions. Just don’t talk to her about whatever it is the women are wearing!
It is a HUGE blockbuster in India and worldwide and you can see it on Netflix right now - but first listen to this episode to hear exactly how awesome it is.
    BTWs include:
What is Tollywood and why is it different from Bollywood
Why you should watch RRR with British people
In the Moment Of Meta we talk about an ad that enraged Alex and how to use hobbies as a source of enthusiasm.

That 5 hour and 20 minutes movie you mentioned is probably be Baahubali 1 and 2. From the same director of RRR. They are two separate films whose combined run time is 5 hours long.

India has 23 officially recognised languages, and thousands of other sub languages, so it's not surprising that we have more than 1 film industry.
Think of this as a parallel universe where instead of one Hollywood there are seven others, and each one of them is competing against other... It's awesome

First time watcher. Not gonna be the last either :)!
Just a couple of facts about RRR:
    1. This film took several years to complete. Partly fuelled by the pandemic. Partly by its scale. Numbers like 300 days to shoot have been tossed around.
    2. The older, bearded gentlemen in red in the end credit scene is the director of the film. SS Rajamouli. He's like a combination of the scale and sincerity of James Cameron, combined with the playful over-the-top energy of Stephen Chow. You guys ought to check out his other films.
    3. The name of the film itself has an interesting story. It was the working title of the film. It references the Stars+Director of the film: Ram Charan (Raju), Rama Rao Jr (Bheem), and Rajamouli (Director). These three guys are such massive names, that their coming together was enough to generate hype. Since they couldn't come up with a better name, and RRR had already caught on, they just stuck with it and retroactively came up with "Rise, Roar, Revolt".
Some other recent Indian films that you guys can check out:
    a. Bahubali 1 and 2: Same director. Similar over-the-top, high drama, playful energy.
    b. Eega: Same director. Similar over-the-top, high drama, playful energy. This might be his most bonkers film, which is saying something.
    c. Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2: I think this is the 5hr film that was being referenced. This is a post-Scorsese, post-modern take on the Gangster film. Very culturally rooted, so may not translate completely.
    d. Tumbbad: Horror-ish. But with deep symbolism. And really beautiful to watch
    e. Andhadhun: Just a fun twisty film.
    f. Sardar Udham: Really hard to watch. But kinda important. It follows a revolutionary of the Indian freedom struggle as he attempts to complete a mission, driven by a deeply traumatic event in India history.
    g. Chak De India: Probably the best sports drama to come out of India. Arguably one of the best ever, period.
    h. Super Deluxe
I can go on and on, but this already kind of a long comment.

    • @electricenthusiasm
      @electricenthusiasm  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Thanks for an amazing comment and for adding even more reasons to be enthusiastic about RRR. We will check out your other recommendations!

    • @27varunable
      @27varunable ปีที่แล้ว

@@electricenthusiasm Happy to add to the conversation around this amazing film :)!
You can see the progression of VFX quality through Rajamouli's filmography. The vision was always there. But his technical knowhow and the availability of tech is matching up to it now. So the visuals in his earlier films, though innovative, are still objectively not up to the mark. As long as you can look past that, you'll have fun watching his films.
The movies I have recommended are contemporary projects. The film making syntax should translate fairly well to non-Indian audiences.
Once you become used to that, you can go check out other iconic Indian films that are perhaps more rooted in our story telling ethos like: Lagaan, Sholay, Dil Chahta hai, Mughal-e-azam, Mother India, Pyaasa etc.

    Here's a boggler:
The only Indian director to win an Oscar - and heck, to even gain a global reputation - was also from Tollywood, except, he made his films in totally different languages!
I am - of course - talkn=ing about a gentleman named Satyajit Ray, who received his Oscar for lifetime achievement for his Benglai films while on his deathbed.
The Bengali film industry is called Tollywood because it is located in an area of Kolkata - erstwhile Calcutta - called tollygunge, which is locally known as Taligonj.
    Yes. India has two Tollywoods....

India has strict policy on animal cruelty, but horses have been used throughout India's history for travel, transport and war just like anywhere else in the world. Using a real horse to ride on its back is not cruelty. So, the horse/horses in the movie are real. Many Indian movies use real elephants, horses to shoot sequences where there is no harm to those animals.

No, even the horses are CGI. Check out the CGI breakdown.

especially wild animals ,protected animals cant be used where they end up being hurt or killed.
Also Raju hits the tiger's nose with flame because one of most sensitive(lot of neurons/nerves density mass) area/body part is nose for the tiger. So,targeting nose with flame and hit impact can shake and dumb the tiger for some much time

I just come here to hear her say telugu.
    Just adorable stuff
So that you know what I'm saying - you pronounce it as tell-gulu (actually pronounced as tel-oo-goo) so that looks super cute.
Even more so because you are so conciously trying to pronounce the words authentically.

You have no idea when you say their fight against the 'Cartoonishly evil' British. You gotta read about the death and destruction British did to Indians during their rule. The massacres they did, the famines they induced. etc etc. Watch the 'Shashi Tharoor oxford speech', it'll give you a statistical/analytical glimpse into what the British did to India. Fun fact - No animals used in movie shooting.. The Horse riding is also CGI during action sequences.. (only the montage straight run on horse is real, rest are over VFX, especially in that kid saving scene, jumping over bridge).

For everyone who watches RRR especially who isn't a native, please follow it by watching Sardar Udham Singh.
It will shed some light onto the unsaid in RRR and would definitely help you better understand the whole colonial situation in India.

Now you have watched RRR, I would suggest you to watch Bahubali 1 and Bahubali 2. Since it was Bahubali that made Rajamouli what he is today. Bahubali 1 and 2 were highest grossing movies in India before RRR

Ram Vs Bheem. Who will win ?
    According to Hinduism -
In movie, Bheem symbolizes - Lord Hanuman (avatar of God Shiva)
and Ram symbolizes - Lord Rama (avatar of God Vishnu)
For fun, try comparing - God Shiva VS God Vishnu..

Others are saying the 5 hour movie is Bahubali. But, I think it is Gangs of Wasseypur part 1 & 2. It was intended to be one movie. However, when it got made the director realised that it couldn't be made into one movie, so he broke it up into 2 parts.
