Obviously, Mary knew that he would not physically abuse her while her mother was present. Hence her mother being there all the time. That was wise of Mary and her mother to do so. Back in those days it was difficult to go through a divorce. I feel bad that she had to go through that.
"Artificial Intelligence," such as most narration on TH-cam these days, doesn't have a soul, so cannot possibly show emotion! Many people making YT videos do not have good speaking voices, or maybe they don't want to do the narration, so they turn to A. I., sadly.
My great-uncle retired from the aircraft industry and then worked as a security guard. He worked at Pickfair some. He said that one room was filled with silver items, awards and such.
You guys do a superb job at investigating. I have heard bios about Mary Pickford but they barely touched the deep dive you have given us. Poor Hollywood stars. What wild roller coaster rides they took to no avail in the end. We love them and mourn their plights. Riches never last forever..
@@BeverlyLedbetter-cb1965 Although Douglas Fairbanks Jr (one of Joan Crawford's husbands) was better looking, he actually does look very much like his father.
It's pretty much what we would expect from celebrities but l would have liked to hear more about her last husband. From what little l know he loved her and treated her well.
Back at the turn of the last century, and into the 19-teens and 'twenties it was common for a house to be paid for within five to ten years, and sometimes before it was built. When Mary's father died, as was possibly the case for many families of the time, her family would have been left functionally destitute. It was good that Mary's mother had a home that could accommodate boarders.
I loved this whole video and it was interesting to see how things worked back in the day. Secrets must be found out and brought to the surface and a light shown on everything that was done.
@lindadeal3344 Just why do you think the secrets must be found out? And why must those same secrets be revealed? Just because they were famous showbiz stars, does not mean they're not allowed to have private lives.
Love this video! Anything about the silent movie era through the early 30's makes me feel nostalgic and at home. No! I am not ancient. But I really suspect I had another life then. I can almost smell that time period. Please do more of these period pieces. How about Carl Dane (the prototype for Donald Sutherland?), Lillian Gish, Florence Lawrence (they had a thing about creating stage names that rhymed then, as in Renee Adoree)? Also Alma Rubens, William Reid and the severe drug addictions of the time. Maybe the most interesting would be on Lucille Ricksen, probably the 1st casualty of child stardom. And we tend to think of the early 20th Century as the simpler, gentler days. Hah! Besides war, the same things happen over and over in different costumes, with different tech. Maybe that's why it's easy to have a kindred feeling with people so separated from us by time. Their stories are still most relevant.
To the narrator; this is the best video you’ve narrated. I commend you for getting a better grasp of the timing of the speech and your diction. You still have work to do but honestly, this is head and shoulders above your previous videos. Congratulations!
I caught that too! Mary was still around in 1953, when Playboy debuted, but I doubt she was asked to pose by then. She did appear in "Playbill" in 1913, though. 😂
What!! @7:36 the narrator said: "They posed for pictures for playboy!" At that time, there was no "Playboy" magazine. I'm not sure that it existed either, but perhaps you meant "Photoplay"?
Left out the purchase of their famous PICKFAIR mansion as well as their relationship with William Randolf Hearst and their visits to Hearst Castle where wild parties took place. The rich are very self-indulging and rarely think to help the less fortunate who helped make them wealthy. 😢
Wild parties? Hearst was known for enforcing strict rules around drinking. He was also known to eject drunks from Hearst Castle and never invite them back.
Do you know who Buddy Rogers was? And no real mention about their films or production company. They actually created Hollywood. This was dull and very sloppily done.
'Just 87 years old...'
That's a bloody good age to reach, so it's hardly a mere!
I've known a few couples like this. They can't live without each other but they can't live with each other either.
My grandparents were like that. They got married & divorced 2X.
As a follow up, my g-parents died of heart attacks, 2 weeks apart.
What are you talking about ? Men and Women can't live with each other or live without... where have you been?
@@Kenistyless It's over your head. Never mind.
Sounds like Rudy and Natacha.

At 7.34 it says they posed for Playboy. Playboy wasn’t published until the 1960s. I wonder how many other inaccuracies there are.
Photoplay January 1914
Maybe Playbill?
Whoever is "reciting" this, you're telling a story... not reading a script. Great information but hard to listen to, slow down, and enjoy the story.

I've heard worse. At least it maintains an interesting lilt. 👍
I was going to say Don’t you know these things are narrated by AI??
Gave up after a few minutes as it is like listening to a child learning to read. Must be some money saving idea but it didn’t work for me
My great-uncle retired from the aircraft industry and then worked as a security guard. He worked at Pickfair some. He said that one room was filled with silver items, awards and such.
If you have to be tricked or coerced into marriage it isn't going to work. I speak from experience.
Cheating never brings a dream life with the new honey.
Mary told an interesting story about how jealous Fairbanks was of Valentino. He was very rude to him until he eventually warmed up to Rudy later on.

I don't know what she saw in him. Thank God his son didn't take looks after him!😣

The narrator ruins this otherwise well done doc, by sounding like a very bored mechanical robot.
And, like so many young people narrating documentaries about Old Hollywood, misusing the term "starlet" when referring to female stars.
@@caraqueno
Will hou please tell us how the narrator misused the term: "starlet"?
Beautiful job.
Enjoyed Mary's story.
I LOVE your vids. Love em!
Mary Pickford’s mother couldn’t have been that poor if she owned a house and could take in boarders.

A very Sad relationship indeed.
Why did you keep using video of Douglas F, Jr.. Also didn't mention that she married again after Fairbanks divorce.
They posed for pictures for Playboy? I don't think so...
"Just 87 years old"?

19:22... That is Clark Gable... Not Douglas Fairbanks.
@Adam-do8eh
You are correct; however, either before, or after Douglas Fairbanks, Clark Gable was also married to Lady Sylvia Ashley.
"Just 87 years old", when does the word just & 87 years old, ever belong in the same sentence?! It's not like she died at 27 years old.
That's PlayBILL, not Playboy.

"THEY POSED FOR PICTURES
FOR PLAYBOY" ??????? @7:34 TIME
To the narrator; this is the best video you’ve narrated. I commend you for getting a better grasp of the timing of the speech and your diction.

The narrator is likely an AI bot. 😉
They posed for pictures for PLAYBOY? Pplaayboy wasn’t founded until the 1950’s. Maybe Photoplay? Not Playboy.
It was "Playbill" in 1913 that she posed for photos!
She would have been in her 60s when Playboy first came out in 1953. It was "Playbill".
Died at only 87 just a baby, life can be so unfair 🤪
"...Pictures for Playboy" 7:32 wow, they were time travelers.

This was a well informed video. Wish you would have mentioned her last husband and marriage and more details about that part of her life.
