    Transcript:
Richard Feynman, born on May 11, 1918, in Queens, New York, was a towering figure in 20th-century physics whose brilliance, irreverent personality, and insatiable curiosity left an indelible mark on science and education. From his early years, Feynman displayed an exceptional aptitude for mathematics and science. He taught himself calculus at a young age and developed a keen interest in understanding the fundamental workings of the universe.
Feynman graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1939 with a bachelor's degree in physics. He then pursued his doctoral studies at Princeton University, where he worked under the supervision of renowned theoretical physicist John Archibald Wheeler. It was during his time at Princeton that Feynman made significant contributions to the development of quantum mechanics, particularly in the area of quantum electrodynamics (QED).
During World War II, Feynman contributed to the war effort by working on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, where he played a crucial role in the development of the atomic bomb. His work on the project gave him firsthand experience with the practical applications of theoretical physics, but it also left him deeply troubled by the destructive power of the weapons he helped create.
After the war, Feynman joined the faculty at Cornell University before eventually settling at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he spent the majority of his career. It was at Caltech that Feynman's reputation as both a brilliant physicist and an exceptional teacher began to flourish.
Feynman's most significant contributions to physics came in the field of quantum electrodynamics, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965, alongside Julian Schwinger and Shin'ichirō Tomonaga. His development of Feynman diagrams provided a visual and intuitive framework for understanding the complex interactions of subatomic particles, revolutionizing the field of theoretical physics.
In addition to his groundbreaking research, Feynman was also renowned for his exceptional teaching ability and charismatic personality. His lectures at Caltech, which covered a wide range of topics in physics, became legendary for their clarity, insight, and humour. Feynman's ability to convey complex ideas in simple terms made him a beloved figure among students and colleagues alike.
Feynman's passion for teaching extended beyond the walls of academia. He authored several books, including the classic "Lectures on Physics," which remains a standard text in undergraduate physics courses. Feynman's knack for storytelling and his willingness to tackle difficult concepts head-on made his books accessible to a wide audience, inspiring countless individuals to pursue careers in science.
Beyond his work in physics, Feynman was a polymath with diverse interests ranging from art and music to safecracking and bongo playing. His autobiography, "Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman!" provides a colourful glimpse into his unconventional life and unconventional approach to problem-solving.
Richard Feynman passed away on February 15, 1988, but his legacy continues to resonate today. His contributions to physics, coupled with his passion for teaching and his infectious enthusiasm for discovery, ensure that he remains one of the most beloved and influential figures in scientific history.
