    Just to let you know, Chris, you have never screwed up. You have always held up the game fabulously and made it so enjoyable. You have kept it real, while keeping it magical and adventurous and perfectly paced. You have brought so many smiles and laughter to us. You are going to be so missed, but I hope we see your face in new places of comfort and creativity!

      I'd like to preface the following with Chris is ABSOLUTELY great and performs very well on stream and live (I frequently watch his streams and have seen him live once). That being said, he has "screwed up." But that's okay, to err is human. His "screw ups" are really rare but we shouldn't say they don't happen, we should say that it is perfectly okay when they do.

    I would just like to say that as a fan of Chris Perkins, I would have never known that he suffered from anxiety. He always seemed so confident and sure of himself. Thank you for sharing and I wish wish you well Dungeon Master.

    The god of DMs is human after all. Lol. Chris is my absolute FAVORITE dm. I love his style and honestly thought he radiated confidence. I never would have suspected he suffered from that level of anxiety. Anxious or not, the man is infinitely triumphant and will always be my inspiration and my hero.

    Chris is why I play d&d again, and not for his work behind the scenes but his performances on camera. Easy to like, funny, fast, witty and all around world greatest DM.

    I'm a University lecturer and I get more anxious before a D&D game than before giving a lecture! Overall though I find running & playing D&D is good for reducing my feelings of anxiety (I get it bad enough for medication), I mostly get it bad when I'm on my own and especially when some bad email arrives.

    Thank you for allowing to see this human moment Chris. I have been watching ACQ INC since the original podcast. I have not been blessed with the opportunity to play dnd having left around 3rd edition or so. You have brought me back in your improve to those stories and times. Your stories along with the team seem so natural they feel real and can definitely see not scripted.
    Thank you humbly from a fan. Your vulnerability gives us more confidence even going back watching each show now.
    Thank you.

    Thank you, Chris, for everything you do. As someone with anxiety I completely relate to the struggle of whether something that freaks you out is ultimately worth it, and I’ve had times when I’ve had to say no, I need to put my mental health first. If it ever comes to a live D&D show and it just becomes too much to deal with, we’d all understand and forgive if you bailed! I can’t imagine having to do one of those shows, and every time you go on stage you have my utmost respect, but missing a show would never diminish that respect.

    If you only knew how much those Acquisitions inc. games has helped me and others. If only to take one's mind of things and have something to smile about. Thanks for that and you made a good choice with who you passed the torch to. It's not the same but it's just as good.

    Chris, you are an inspiration. However you feel about yourself, the vast majority of people do not think you're an impostor. In fact, the culture feels like they're impostors of you. You are THE textbook example of a DM in the mainstream community. You have done so many good things for me, personally. And for that, words cannot express my gratitude. Do not feel guilty for stepping down.

  • @WallyDM

    What a fantastic interview. I can definitely relate. For 15 years I DJ'd weddings. With being a DJ, all of the experiences you described factored in... The anxiety would kick-in about a week or two before the wedding. The stress and pressure I put on myself always made me question why I chose this path. The day of the wedding was the worse, but right before everything started I tossed back a shot of some good stuff and went out and performed. About an hour into the gig the anxiety subsided and when it was over, the feeling of accomplishment was extraordinary. Today, I no longer DJ, but still feel that same intensity when running a Live Stream on my channel or DMing a handful of players in a game.

    • @VijoPlays
      @VijoPlays 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's funny. DMing is the best feeling out there, seriously. If you told me it was a drug, I'd believe you... but damn, if the anxiety wasn't INSANE before starting a game. Half an hour into it and all is forgotten, but before that.. shivering, voice breaking, super tense.
      Edit: Plus, DJing probably scratches the same itches. You put work out there and you aren't sure whether your clients/players will like it and until you do, everything is just uncertain... The whole "If I fail everyone will hate me and the day will be ruined." thing is present in both the DM's and DJ's mindset. But if you pull it off, you get the satisfaction of having your clients/players compliment you on how awesome it was and how much they've enjoyed it.

    Thanks Chris, I'll miss you greatly as a DM for AI, but as a person whose been a fan for DnD and always promising friends I'll eventually run a game I get anxious too... So totally understand why you would tap out with PAX happening as often as it does now.
    Your shows have always gone great, even when they `crash and burn` and go completely off script it's still incredibly entertaining and you are so gifted. Thanks for getting me properly interested in role playing games.

    This sounds all normal to me. I made myself take Drama 6 years in a row in jr high and high school, and I did a lot of improv. You may claim anxiety, and maybe it is, I called it adrenaline. I don't remember much from what I did, but I remember laughter, so I think I hit it. Thank you for the differing points of view to mine, and just opening up about your fears.

    I'm kinda, the opposite of Chris with my anxiety, but end up in the same place. I started DMing by watching him, and it always felt like he had a plan. In normal reality, it's anxietal depression - that everything I do is going to be a problem, and i can't fuck up, so when something fucks up the depression takes me sooo low. When behind the screen, and i'm actually in control, the worst my players can do is just...not their fucking job. Clerics that refuse to heal, Hexblades that don't understand their weapon talks to them....the rogues....learned to bullshit from Virari. It's been a learning experience, and someone might die to a black dragon soon.

    As a fledgling DM also with anxiety, hearing that my favorite DM also has (performance) anxiety and impostor syndrome is kind of a relief, in a strange way. It’ll still be there, which sucks, but Chris DMs well with both, so maybe I can DM well with both too (not in spite of them).

    Thanks for the video, love it! I always look up to Chris, love his games and my biggest dream is to play with him. Maybe someday. :) As for anxiety, my work pushed me to talk about it on stage, and I'm still terrified to do it, every time. It is very comforting to know that Chris, who looks so confident and so great on stage, can be frightened too. Thanks again!

    I believe that he is worried that the crowd will turn against him.... sadly it is likely but not because of anything he does. There are lots of people who want to hate raid over misunderstood concepts or ideas. How do you play the bad guys without being seen as one. I am sure there is plenty more to the story of his anxiety but not knowing how people will take what you say is very nerve racking. You aren't perfect Mr.Perkins, despite what others may say, but you are a great person and excellent DM. Your faults are pebbles next to your monumental success and achievements.

  • @trexpaddock
    @trexpaddock 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    What he is describing is 'stage fright', not so much 'social anxiety'.
    The difference between social anxiety, and stage fright is on par with the difference between shooting someone, vs. throwing a bullet at them.

    Chris Perkins fear that he shouldn't be the DM on stage and there might be someone better, no, there is no one better. It's hard to describe the soft-skills that Chris has, but I've watched all the other top DM's and he is the best of the best of the best... so...Sorry Chris, please give us more public DMing... Sorry for your anxiety, but please push through it and keep being the best DM out there!

    I doubt this will ever reach Chris and I know syndromes like Imposter's aren't simply treated by saying "Nu-uh!", but nonetheless, I will still write this little thing.
    If it weren't for Chris and his absolutely brilliant performance at the AI live games, I would never have found DnD. I remember years ago I would ask myself a few times "What *is* DnD even?... You can do anything? That surely can't be right, one person sits down and tells a story and other people play characters, but... how? Does the person (DM) have a book, or how does he define somebody doing something?!". At some point this confusion ate me up and I just searched for a game of DnD to maybe get a better grasp of it, as I couldn't find proper, easy to consume rulings.
    I stumbled upon the AI games and while his players were great (Viari's chandeliers are still stuck in my brain, Omin's excellent negotiations, coupled with the other characters), but something stuck with me. Something I carry on in every game I play and something that I think about on a daily basis. Fun. When Perkins DM'ed the AI games, shit would go down. The players would experiment and try super weird things that no rule book would have in mind, but Perkins handled these things in the way I see DnD to this very day. It's okay to break rules, if it means players will have more fun. Who cares about the fact that a human shouldn't be able to jump on a chandelier, break it down and kill 10 enemies? If it makes things more fun for the players, that is the right thing to do - granted your players want this, not too serious type, of game.
    I've tried getting into Critical Role about a dozen times, and while I am a pretty hardcore fan now (watched all of C1, every one shot, most of C2), the first few episodes just weren't for me (I love them now, but if I didn't skip the first 8 episodes, I could NOT have gotten into CR). This applies to most podcasts about DnD, except for AI. Chris' DMing was different than any other and he is, and always will be, the God of DMing to me.
    While I was very saddened by Chris leaving, I understand it to the fullest and hope that one day we can see him in action again, even if it means we only see him in front of the camera, without the PAX shebang around it.

    you should learn about mindfulness.. Your thoughts are what create chemicals in your body and mind that have you then feel the anxiety.. If you learn how to not do that through mindfulness you won't have to deal with the results of those thoughts.. Each to their own n all that just saying... The reason it goes is because your thoughts turn to the game...and comes back because the crowd turn your thoughts back.. So it's acknowledging and accepting the thoughts and dealing with them in a mindful way that will stop it ... Edit.. BTW if you should happen to see this Chris, thank you for years and years of great d&d
