Neil amazing job explaining how all the components work together! I don't like fixing things by being told, connect here and there with no explanation as to why. Your explanation makes diagnosing problems and avoiding mistakes so much easier.
Thanks very much. I have to first try the majgic hammer on my starter and solenoid today but otherwise pull it from the engine. This video has been very informative.
Thank you for the message Karl.... when mine went wrong the first time, I had some success with the hammer....lol. it was the only way I could get home before I could investigate!
Hi Neil. Is it possible to remove the solenoid without removing the starter motor? I think my solenoid may need replacing as it's not retracting, meaning that the cranking continues even with the key turned off. I need to identify if it's the solenoid or the ignition switch but if the solenoid I'll need to replace. Many thanks
Hi David. You won't be able to remove the solenoid without removing the Starter motor because the 3 screws are hidden by the gearbox back plate. Also, you may find that you have a problem with the lever that moves the drive pinion forward. Hope this helps and good luck.

Really helpful Neil.. I have a used motor that will spin in the vice but the solenoid not operating, so I'll take a closer look !
I'm really pleased that it has helped.
