What a clever idea. Thanks for taking the time to upload this 👍 Regards, Doc in Australia.
@doc1701 Thank you.... you are very kind.
Interesting video. Nice work in sorting out your lathe.
Nice simple repair.
Thank you..... it is still working after quite a bit of use! But I have the new one now too.
I really appreciate your video and the explanation. This made my task very easy and complete.
thanks very much.
Very nice work sir.
Thank you for the kind comments.
You'll need to make sure it's well lubricated at all times, I can see a lot of wear on your already worn leadscrew.
Thank you , that is good advice.
Clever stuff cheers😊
Thank you.
Easily got my thumbs up. Of all the years I been a mechanic and at-home machinist, I have never seen anyone tackle that job like you did. Was very interesting following along to see what you did next. Thanks for sharing and thanks for not putting stupid music in the video. Was nice getting to hear you and the realistic sounds of your work.
Thanks for the kind words.... It's great to hear someone make a comment like yours and it is encouraging to get some feedback. I have another idea for the top cross slide that does not involve welding, making it more suited to someone who does not have a welder.
Just been watching this as my speedometer is out by around 10mph! Only to discover this is my speedometer out of my MGB GT which I purchased from you earlier in the year. The GT is going really well by the way, I have re-foamed and recovered the seats, all new front suspension, covered around 1200 miles so far. Thank you.
Hi Stuart, I’m glad that the MGB is going well and that you are tidying it up a bit….wrt the speedo, It may be worth adjusting the needle back about 5 to 7 mph? It should always over-read about 10%.
Hi, I have been following your exploits with your Mellor lathe with interest. I too own a circa 1941 Mellor but mine is the turret version. I am interested to know how you faired with the cross slide nut repair and specifically what the trapezoidal thread size is. I have the same problem but have “fixed” the backlash by adding a spring loaded ball bearing into the thread to minimise the slap. Looking forward to seeing part two. Keep up the great content
Hi and thanks for your support and kind comments. I’m still working on part two to the backlash problem, and I think that I may have a solution. The leadscrew size is a problem! It is not a standard size, and I have not found a match. I have bought a T14x3 leadscrew with a nut. But they are right hand threads which means the handle rotation is reversed. I am not too concerned about that, but I can see others may not like it. But my first trial is to make a new leadscrew nut. (I’m calling it my ‘Frankenstein Leadscrew Nut’). I hope to publish that one soon. I’d like to see how you tackled the backlash issue?
Hi, I went down a similar path modifying the thread and nut from a scissor jack unfortunately like your experience the thread was in the opposite direction. Plan B, I then drilled and part tapped a hole into the original brass nut so it exited between threads. I then measured and found a ball bearing that would sit about a third into the thread of the cross slide screw to take up the slack and put a spring behind that secured in with a grub screw. I then adjusted the gib strip to take out any play with the cross slide. It is a bit of a botch but it has held up well for the last six months while I find a better solution (or a better lathe) I will say however, I really like this lathe as it is far from perfect but it has served me well. You may find a serial number on yours on the end of the flat slide way which may give you a better idea of . Also on the back of cross slide thread there should be a finger nut that when locked in pushes a tapered spacer into place allowing auto feed on your cross slide. I saw you were removing the rear cover but did not see the finger nut. Hope this helps
At 3:10 there is a black shape inside the speedometer housing. Kind of diamond shape. I am wondering if that is rubber or what it is. I have mine apart, and the substance is hard as a rock.
@writerjmd hi and thanks for watching. It is a long time since I had my speedo apart. I think it was a rubber spacer or something to stop the chassis of the internal working from rubbing on the case.
@@Madeinwem Thanks. What's left of mine was hard and crumbling. I think I will make one out of a toolbox drawer liner. That should be about the same thickness. Your video was helpful because I could freeze it and see what shape it was supposed to be. Thank you.
This is amazing 🎉
Thank you....
still got a couple of oilers for your lathe,, just up the road from you at Northwood
@fretman8379 Thank you, that's very kind..... can you send a picture?
Thanks very much. I have to first try the majgic hammer on my starter and solenoid today but otherwise pull it from the engine. This video has been very informative.
Thank you for the message Karl.... when mine went wrong the first time, I had some success with the hammer....lol. it was the only way I could get home before I could investigate!
You look more tan than your past videos. lol
Thanks for noticing. I've been on holiday to Corfu.
Your "fix" unfortunately limits the amount of travel for the crossfeed...! To fix that right you need to replace you nut and lead screw. If your going fix it fix it right... !
The title of the video says "repair" not replacement, lets wait for part 2 and then you can judge.
That is not correct. The travel is not affected because of the length of the compound tool post. Also, it is almost impossible to get a replacement part for an 83 year old Mellor Lathe.
Does it mean that the oil sensor will close the circuit only in case of low pressure ? and never in case of too high pressure ? this means as well the ECU checks a close circuit first and then should go to an open circuit when the engine is running ?
Hi Tech. This pressure sensor is from a Triumph Spitfire. The car dates from the 60s to the 80s and did not have an ECU. The sensor was a pure switch. With no pressure (Engine off, ignition on) the switch was closed, and the current would flow and illuminate the light. And with oil pressure, when the engine is running, the switch would open, and the light would go out. I hope this helps?
As previous comment. I can’t find part 3. Is it possible to publish the link. Parts 1 and 2 are very informative and well presented
Thank you for the complement Nigel. Unfortunately I do not have the original part 3 anymore. Sorry.
Very nice video , I have a 1961 MGA1600 since 2003, and Jeager SM6161/08 1440 speedo/tach/odo/trip. Workings must be similair. my speed jumps by +/- 5 mph at 30, trip counter does not add, odo works fine. So now I 'dare' to take her out and repair/clean this winter. Too bad your vid is in 480 iso 720/1080P.....
I'm really sorry about the recording quality....... If I'd known how popular it was going to be, I'd heave saved the original.
@@Madeinwem no worries mate. I will add some ‘Dutch courage’ before I begin in November or so. And I have ‘lived’ with this current condition since….ehrrr…2003! :-)
Do have two glass oilers that may fit your head stock to make oiling much better.
good lathe them Mellor's and be a lot better now you got that motor on. Just up the road from you , in Northwood
Olá amigo gsotei da adapoatação !! Boa sorte sempre

Nice work sir
Thank you Rusty....
Are you keeping Hamsters in there? Mice? You are making your lathe look stupid. Men of Mellor's day were brave enough to leave this sort of nonsense out
LOL - Thanks for your comment..... I'd rather keep all my fingers though, so it's staying.......
Looking good so far. Can't wait to watch part 2.
Thank you, you are very kind. I've just posted part two.
Hi i cant find video 3 of 3.... I have a defender speedo that looks similar, im hoping to either use an old speedo and adjust the miles to suit my tdi or fix the tdi speedo.
Hi Wayne, I'll see if I can find a link and send it to you...
@@Madeinwem excellent thank you😉👍
perfect! Exactly what I was looking for.
Very nice work sir
@RustyInventions-wz6ir That's very nice of you to say so..... thank you. I'm in the process of completing the next instalment.
That gearing is called a back gear. My Logan lathe has it and many others do also.
Thanks Eric. Much appreciated.
Plain bearings max out at around 800 rpm, If you aren't going to use a countershaft, watch you don't over speed the spindle, and ruin it.
Good tip .... thank you.
Back Gears are for Low Speed High Torque cutting operations. Large Diameter stuff etc !
Good explanation and visuals. Thanks
Thank you.
Use the back gear assembly you will need it believe me. Look at videos about atlas lathes close copy.
I've just viewed one of the videos on the Atlas, really worthwhile! thank you for the tip.
Olá amigo, que maravilha de torno,e muito bom trabalho!!!! Lhe desejo saúde e cada vez mais sucesso!!!
I would add that counter shaft back in. It gives you more speeds to the chuck. The big gear on the back is called a Back Gear. There is a screw on the large gear next to the chuck that will unscrew and allow the chuck to rotate in Back Gear. Very useful. Good luck figuring some of it out!!
Also, by discarding the second drive cone you are causing yourself problems: These enable you to have one size drive belt, which slips between four gears. If you attach your motor directly, you have to build an adjustor on the motor. Don;'t be removing things, because you don't understand them,. This a lovely, old lathe and I wish you luck restoring it
The extra set of pulleys you showed backwards. The small pulley on the back set should line up with the large pulley on the lathe, this will give you multiple speeds. It should also be much easier to setup without building a bracket to mount the motor on top. If you eliminate the extra pulleys you will have to install a variable frequency drive to change speeds.
@@mattgill6676 Thanks for the feedback it’s much appreciated.
@@mattgill6676 I have a plan to move the motor longitudinally along the motor mount to engage different pulleys.
The large twin gears, which lock in and out are you Back Gears, they give a slow, strong speed: Bigger of the two is the Bull Wheel - you lose a key feature by removing them
There is a pin in the biggest gear on the lathe, pull that out when the back gear is engaged and you will see what it does.
Thanks for the explanation and feedback it’s much appreciated.
Same part in mine split after 3 uses, no parts available in Canada... Thanks Karcher!
Thanks for the video. I have the same issue with my Karcher K7, where did you find the parts in the UK ? Thanks.
Hi Gary, thanks for the kind comment. On the split part, there was a part number. I then used google to search for the part. My part came from the UK.
@@Madeinwem Thank you mate.
Finally I have fixed my K7, I opened the cover and found that the cylinder head recoil tube was broken, no more leaking after the part replacement. 🎉🎉🎉
It seems as if you're missing something. Electricity! You need to get some power in there to make the whole thing work.
Try this one..... th-cam.com/video/latCgZ0bYes/w-d-xo.html
This is why I love the internet
Wow What a great description, Brilliant, thanks!!!!
Another MGB GT living in Shropshire mine lives just outside Telford a 74 on an N plate one of the last with chrome.

Thank You.
Very informative. My oil pressure switch is a 3 prong for a 78 Cadillac Coupe with the 425 carburetor engine. One wire feeds on end of switch, other end has wire leading to indicator light on the dash and the other is a wire to the choke heater on side of carburetor. There's no 12v power going to choke heater, but the fuse and the light work ok as it should...could it still be a bad oil pressure switch? According to service manual the electric choke receives an electric current operating thru the oil pressure switch whenever the engine running and it isn't. I suspect it's bad because at cold start up the engine would run a bit all the while idleling bad and stumbling then it'll cut off. However, once i get it going, i have no issues at all thru the course of the day. Engine runs perfectly fine. It only occurs during start up and cold weather. Any feedback is appreciated 👏 thanks
Sorry about the late reply Edgar. Also I'm not familiar with this system..... sorry.
@@Madeinwem I got it fixed and sorted out. Thanks for the reply.

Thank you. Much appreciated
you are welcome.
is there any difference in the construction of the switch for units with 2 or 3 spades?
I've only come across the Oil Px Sx with one terminal. Sorry.
Thank you so much for making this video. I have this exact issue with my 1965 MGB Smiths speedo. Although my internals were somewhat different, your video gave me the basics to complete the repair. A side note: I had the same issue with removing the internals due to the face and trip reset shaft. I solved it by removing the speedo needle and face first, then the internals dropped right out. Eazy Peezy.
Great to hear!
