    I rarely ever watch any live videos but when it comes to Mr. Darnielle I feel I won't be complete til I see every video performance of this man... He is definitely one of the best musicians/song writers alive.

      It's such a nice feeling to find one like that. Where it's like "oh okay yeah, awesome. I get to listen to this song so many times that it becomes inextricably woven into the very fabric of my soul. This song is about to go from a cool song I like even though I've only heard it a few times to being literally a part of who I am."
      Songs are COOL.

    it's amazing. there's nothing groundbreaking or even all that special about his band. he's not some stupid pretty boy making music, he's not blending different styles, he doesn't even have a spectacular voice (but it is good, still) but still you can tell he feels every chord he plays, and his lyrics are unpredictable and true. his music is more an experience of captured feeling than just a song.

  • @MsFuzzipoo
    @MsFuzzipoo ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Still one of my favorite of his older performances. I love the smile that breaks through periodically. Someone brought up JD's "weird facial contortions" here in the comments over a decade ago. I can't disagree with their observation, and yet, I feel compelled to note: throughout my 40yrs I've seen _a lot_ of singer/songwriters who contort their face in a manner that makes my skin crawl... John Mayer, for example... but JD's contortions have never made me uncomfortable. They're endearing at best, and genuinely amusing otherwise.

  • @selfay8593

    His floppy hair got me

    • @MsFuzzipoo
      @MsFuzzipoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Shit yes. It's fantastic.
      Hair style/length has a BIG influence on whether I find someone attractive or not. John isn't my type (which is nothing about him, it's about me). But in this video, with that floppy dark hair? Yes please.
      Ugh. I feel like I'm objectifying him... probably because I am! I really respect him as an artist and a person (which makes the objectification feel extra squicky). His work is amazing, and he came from an incredibly shitty beginning yet turned into an extremely kind and thoughtful person. That's a big part of why I'm a fan of The Mountain Goats. I have a decent amount of respect and admiration towards JD himself... Not to say I worship him or put him on a pedestal (and I'm only clarifying this because some of the fans I've encountered talk about him like he's some sort of god. I find it unnerving... He has his flaws, like anyone else. He's human).
      Ok, I'm stopping before I embarrass myself further.

    The garter snake passed lazily through the tall yellow-headed sourgrass
    There was cold, clear water in a tall, clean glass
    The sunlight hit the sides and it came through the water tilted
    I saw the condensation on your hand
    I could feel the glaciers melting
    And a warm, soft wind
    Covered up everything
    On the day your love came screaming through me
    You had oranges and lemons in a canvas bag beside you
    And seven different kinds of light welling up inside of you
    You smeared citrus pulp all over me, it felt okay
    Good old East Rutherford three thousand miles away
    I felt the warm surge blast my mind
    Coming in from behind
    On the day your love came screaming through me
    In the fresh light of day
    I felt something falling away
    On the day your love came screaming through me

    His facial expression reveals the irony in a lot of his music, coupled with his anger. The performance of No Children he smiles a great big smile when he says 'I hope you die, I hope we both die.' for example. Watching him perform actually has redefined how I listen to not just his music, but a lot of music.

    THANK YOU
    I also think it's damn offensive of @allhailkingarthur to imply that Darnielle is solely a lyricist; his melodies aren't complicated, but that's the point, they're purposefully and elegantly simple. Songs like the Diaz Brothers, This Year, and basically the entire album The Life of the World To Come prove that Darnielle is a superb music writer. His mindblowing lyrics are complemented by whatever the hell notes he wants, they're always excellent, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

    I have seen the interviews where John describes the distance he has with the characters in his songs (ST was the first autobiographical album). However, I believe those quotes only apply to the songwriting process. I think one would be hard pressed to claim that he performs them with no emotion. One of the best things about tMG is that John doesn't hold anything back, he gets into character and kills it. Sure John might not have an emotional connection, but the characters themselves sure do.
