Deer numbers in Scotland have soared in the last couple of decades to around 750,000, creating a growing paradox traditional stalkers want to conserve the deer, while conservationists are calling for a substantial cull, arguing that their browsing activity is degrading the landscape. Patrick Barkham goes to the Highlands to investigate and stalk deer.

A terrible account of the highlands and Deer Management.
Deer must be managed by man or there will be too many on the land and they will starve to death or spread disease amongst the heard.
Conversation groups in my eyes are not one bit good for the countryside or wildlife management. Let gamekeepers manage the wildlife as they have successfully for many many years instead of a student who has lived in a city most of their life and decides they know about the countryside

Estates managed for shooting are always diverse and rich in wildlife. Unmanaged ground or ground managed by those disconnected from the land and game are sterile landscapes. The same thing has happened in the eastern U.S. where the so-called conservationists have turned vast national forests into a land full of trees and barren of wildlife in just 25 years.

Hunting porn! I do agree the deer population is out of control and Scotland should look a tad more like scandinavia. Right now it looks more like a windy cold heathered sahara.

As long as you're prepared to manage their numbers. Wolves are incredible predators that quickly de-populate entire herds of animals. They easily take down Elk in North America, an animal 2-3 times bigger than the largest Red Deer.

That man did not kill one deer - he killed three. It was a doe, a female, and late in the season. So that means it would have been carrying a pair of fawns in its womb that would have been born in the spring. Mamma deer plus two babies equals three deer.

It looks like a yearling hind so unlikely to be pregnant but even if she was twins are quite uncommon in red deer...

Most does or hinds that are shot are pregnant. Given that culling is neccessary for both the deers welfare and that of the other animals that share its habitat the seasons are set out so that dependant young are not left alone if the mother is culled. Which is worse? Shooting a pregnant one or leaving a youngster to starve to death?
