Today, we'll be making notepads with the 5 Inch Adjustable Pad Counter and the Quick As A Wink pad counter.
We'll start off with our sheets to be padded, some chipboard, our counters, a quart of padding compound and a brush.
The 5 inch adjustable pad counter allows you to set it for any number of sheets up to, you guessed it, 5 inches thick.
We start by counting out the desired number of sheets.
Assemble the pad counter so that its jaws can squeeze around your desired stack thickness. And then tighten the handle to secure it in place.
Begin stabbing the counter into the paper stack to quickly count out your stacks. Place them aside with chipboard to divide your notepad stacks.
It takes no time at all to rapidly count out hundreds of sheets.
The Quick-As-A-Wink Pad Counter is a separating comb device that divides a 2.5" stack of paper into 5 even stacks.
Just align the counter at the top of the stack and gently stab it straight in. Then rock it upward and quick as a wink, you have 5 stacks! Then just insert chipboard and you're ready to pad.
The Challenge HandyPadder operates the same as other models, but is made from all metal construction.
Start by mounting the jogging plate with the logo facing in toward the center. Hang it from the two bolts on the upper frame, making sure it recesses in the lower channel.
Rotate the table so that it leans down for jogging your papers against.
I like to add some extra scrap stock or a sheet of chipboard, then stack your sheets with the edge to be padded against the jogging plate.
Add the clamping plate and slide the clamps down until it touches. Tighten both side by turning the hand screws. Once the stack is clamped down, rotate the frame to the padding position and remove the jogging plate.
Now you'll need padding compound and a pad brush. Open the padding compound and apply a moderate amount. Make sure to brush from the center out to avoid getting glue on the sides.
One coat is usually all that's needed, otherwise you're just putting glue on top of glue and it won't strengthen the grip at all.
After drying for 45-60 minutes, loosen the clamps and remove the clamp plate.
Remove your stack and use padding knife to cleanly slice the stacks apart under each chipboard separator.
So that wraps up this tutorial. If you have any questions on padding or anything bindery related visit www.cfsbindingsupplies.com or email them to info@cfsbinding supplies.com -- thanks for watching.

One recommendation. You could actually have that bottom tab much thinner and come to the same point as the ones above it, which would also cost less in manufacturing.
End result would be that you have the top edge to lay on the top and the rest of the barbs penetrate the paper which would allow you to push it into the paper at a consistent angle (straight into the paper), separating into stack much easier.

For easier cleanup, fold a sheet of 11 x 17 20# paper in half long-ways and push the fold up against the jogger, with half the sheet going up the jog plate and half lying on the bottom tray. Put your job to be padded on top of the paper. Now put another folded sheet on top of your job, with half going up the jog plate before adding the clamp bar. Clamp everything down, then spin the padder around. Remove the jog plate, and then fold the bottom paper down, creating a drip catcher. (The top sheet should help keep the clamp plate clean.)

how do you avoid the chipboard from getting cut into the sheet right underneath? you can see this happening at the 6:25' mark, there's a bunch of chipboard on the top of the next pad where the glue is.

Using a padding knife to separate the stacks is key! www.cfsbinds.com/3-pad-knife-1-ea.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw2dG1BhB4EiwA998cqOyaC2niWbmP98LWHVnPtG_NT6xmzOSeN_vQrX6PRJ5tpzLOOwSVPBoCtnQQAvD_BwE

would this method work on 3-part ncr paper notepads - they will be perforated so sheets can be torn out of book - don't need fan a-part ( I'm new to this stuff - want to make my own forms and books for our business)

Yes this will work on NCR, and you can even purchase pre-perforated NCR to print on prior to padding/fusing.
