MK 1 was dead to me a long time ago. I don't even think I finished the story mode. It's literally the first MK I've ever owned that I've never finished the story mode

They not only changed Sektor and Cyrax gender but at the same time they completely changed the Cyborg initiative narrative which was probably one of the most terrifying and disturbing stories from MK universe and instead of having the killing cyborg machines that were stripped from their humanity and their minds, we have these.. iron-man wanna bes...
In many intro dialogues Sektor hints at a future plan for the suit initiative. My theory is they planned on doing the cyborg story line in Kombat pack 3, but since it got cancelled it’ll never get to come to fruition
and this removed the complexity of cyrex and sektor because cyrax didnt want to become a cyborg but was forced to become one and when he came back he wanted to make sure this would never happen to anyone again While sektor willingly became one and not only that but he played a major part into turning the rest of the clan into cyborgs as well Its even better when the leader of them made this to improve their loyalt to him only for its more loyal menber, sektor, to kill him in the name of turning more ninjas into cyborgs
The funniest part about the gender swap is that it don't even make sense within the story. Why would Liu Kang gender swap them? The only explanation I can think of and kinda make sense is in the previous timeline Cyrax and Sektor was secretly in the closet and Liu Kang knew about it and when he was crafting the MK1 timeline he decided to turn Cyrax and Sektor into females.
Especially with the damn price. I'm a hardcore MK fan and all but damn dude the DLC is hella expensive and not worth it. I haven't even bought it yet due to price.

You see, cyrax and sektor didn't kill mk1. It was WB themselves. 70 dollars for the game is already kinda steep. But now they are being money hungry and overpriced the dlc and have an item shop with skins that can cost up to ten bucks.
Skins only cost real money in the store if you buy the dragon crystals you forget you can earn a certain amount of dragon krystals in game by ranking up the characters but if you like the days where you paid one price for mk and got everything else for free those days are over nobody said you had to buy it

I would argue it’s both, the gender change combined with the absurd price tag and forced bundle all contributed to making this fail in the end. It also doesn’t help that they made half the pack guests again.
Yeah... I think you're right. I didn't want to play as a female Sektor or Cyrax. Therefore, I didn't purchase the DLC. Still waiting to buy Conan and T1000, though.
There was also that they said the tower endings were canon, showed us Sektor in Bi-Han's ending, AND IT WAS A DUDE, then they went and changed it. They broke their own canon, they shouldn't be rewarded for that. Then theres the fact that they took away one of the eeriest parts of the story, The Cyber Initiative. Now our cyborgs are just knock-off Iron Mans rather than actually being cyberized.
SubZero’s ending shows him standing in front of someone welding (wearing blue), and he only mentions the name Sektor. The DLC was also planned way before release, so I doubt it’s a retcon.
@nothingtosee226 As we see from the start of his ending and previous games, the Lin Kuei wears blue by default, so Sektor wearing blue before the suit tracks. Bi Han says Sektor is the one who had the idea to use science rather than magic, along with explicitly referring to Sektors genius, it's more than safe to assume that the only person present working on one of the only 2 suits we see, can only really be Sektor.
@ The Lin Kuei’s default color is not blue. Scorpion and Smoke aren’t blue. Also, the default Lin Kuei wear black as seen during the shakedown with Madame Bo and Scorpion’s wedding. It’s not safe to assume when Sektor is now clearly a girl and the DLC was planned before launch. If they wanted to imply that the person was Sektor, then they would’ve given them features to resemble…Sektor like red.
@nothingtosee226 Yes, it is usually blue. What color were they wearing in Mythologies, what color were they wearing in the Sub-Zero story mode segment in MKX, in Bi-Han's ending in MK1? Yeah, there are the special ones like Kuai Liang, Tomas, Sektor, and Cyrax, but your base grunt's primary color was and still is blue, sometimes sporting an all-black uniform as well. When they refer to a character's idea and their individual genius, then show one character working on the said idea, it's probably that character whose idea it was, in this case, Sektor, who else could it be?
@ I thought the guy working was Sektor too, but from a developer standpoint, they would’ve had to cast and design Sektor long in advance before story boarding and designing cutscenes. The love dynamic between SubZero and Sektor also couldn’t been last minute (unless they were planning a same-sex relationship).
I think the idea with the guest weee tht KP1 catering to the younger demographic and KP2 catering to older/OG fans. While I also take issue with the KP2 guest, I understand the vision and don’t fault them for it.

The genderswap of Cyrax and Sektor isn't the problem. The problem is asking 60€ for what's basically just a Kombat Pack + story expansion, WTF were they thinking? We didn't even have the possibility to buy things separately. 30€ now on sales is more like it, 60€ just no...
The price was fine. Players paid $10 less for MK11's DLC, and that only had 3 DLC characters. The majority of MK fans just don't like the MK1 experience with its baffling esthetic/gameplay/kameo choice and the sales, player count and overall negativity prove that.
Why 40, 50, 60$+ season passes (even the shitty ones), including other fighting games, and infinite hundreds of extra mtx wasn't that big of a problem before for years? Because nobody cared and there were no hate hype about it?
Mortal Kombat died because of consecutive wrong decisions. Cameo balance, bugs and errors every update, expensive DLC, expensive skins and their meager assortment, lack of cross play, lack of content,Lack of game modes (mk1 even made us miss the stupid time towers from mk11). I understand that the decision and policy of their relations with customers was influenced in many ways by WB's greed.

The gender swap actually did make me angry. I love sektor and cyrax. They are my favorite mk characters. I was already hesitant about buying another dlc pack, but then seeing my characters changed was an absolute no.
I mean I could get the gender swap but that's FAR LOW on my bucket list of problems (it's mot even a problem for me, it's just a why). My only problem is the price of the other stuff. As long as the price is worth it, I gonna buy a dlc on my book
Hopefully next time onaga shows up and we have an actual tournament of titans or timelines just to solidify it back to one timeline being the winner and going forward with that unis story instead of multiversing it. That’s a hell of a line up and something that I might actually buy. But with the expansion that we have, Noob is the only one worth getting. No way would I pay $50 just for him.

100% MK11 made customizing your fighter feel unique and even the dialogue between characters was good, MK1’s customization is straight up ass, and whoever came up with the idea of cameos should get fired! They should’ve been on the main roster, Darrius and Mavado looked too damn cool to just be side kicks.
The more I thought about the changes they made to all the characters in this game the more I realized I didn't like them. I thought I would get used to them, but I never did. The changes not only seem worse overall, but they don't seem to have the potential for better stories in the long run.

What killed MK1 was the multiverse lore, the Kameo setup, the gear customisations and the lame ass guest characters and the lack of skins for the dlc. I think a lot of us fans went into the game thinking it will meet MK11 expectations. MK11 was a well made game that fans grown to like just for NRS to make a drastic change again and want you to pay all this damn money for it. All the racist cap that spark controversy were mostly by bots and people on meds to get fans to not like "DEI" basically black characters in games to get people to think "white people are under attack" with "woke agenda" in media what ever the hell that means 😒
One of the most ridiculous things about this situation is the fact that they don't even look like cyborgs. They are literally two people wearing superficial armor similar to that of a warrior, but with details that resemble that of a cyborg. You can even see their faces. If you look at Cyrax and Sektor, probably the first thing you'll think is, "It's a cyborg. Do they still have any human parts to them?" because they literally have full cyborg armor and mechanical limbs. For MK 1 they literally changed the gender, put the women in identical half armor and tried to sell it in the style of "Hey, they don't care about that. We also have the new audience that buys everything that their ideology approves".
As someone who's been trying to get into MK, Sektor and Cyrax are the least of my concerns as I barely know who they are, the main issue is how fast MK games often die out. Seriously, I can't believe MK 11 was cut short.
Mortal Kombat is supposed to be scary, with frightening villains, terrifying locations and making you wonder how the heroes will get out of scary situation alive even with a fighting chance. That sort of suspense wasn't there in MK1, just multiverse crap. And the suits that pushed the silly ideas onto the devs are to blame for it.

PS5 only games sales numbers are going to be lower because of the simple fact that PS5 consoles having been selling like that in the 4 years since it launched or at the 4 year mark of the PS4. But it’s sad how they’re prioritizing MK yet they cancel the game cuz of “low” KR sales? What are those sales numbers? Why does MK have shorter lifespans than the Tekkens and Street fighters that last 7-9 years at a time?

I feel like no one says this enough but SonicFox is also part to blame for MK1's sad state, whether we like it or not Sonic is the representative of the MK community and is probably the only player the devs give a damn about so when he tweets out how great the game is, how it's just like MKX and how every character is broken the main devs see that and his sheep fanbase agreeing to it, it does more harm than good especially when you consider how the game is being excluded from tournaments and has the worst player retention than any MK game out there. He needs to do us a favour and stop with his lies and boot licking NRS then maybe we might see a difference.
I’m glad you touched on Scorpion, because everyone attributes no one liking the cyborgs to politics, and they completely forget that no one liked Kuai being Scorpion either. But you can’t virtue signal that one so I guess is not that popular.
Just the entire idea of kuai scorpion was failed, it doesn't fit the character and the va honestly didn't do a great job with the voice since it just feels so forced and awkward compared to hanzo scorpion

I don't think enough people would've bought the DLC at $40, $30 or even $20. The majority of the MK community just doesn't like the actual experience of MK1 as a whole. Baffling esthetic, gameplay (kameos) and overall design choices. The sales and player count reflect that. It's not that complicated.
All the people trying to deny the fact that the gender swap didn’t play a part in the DLC not selling well are just in denial. People will pay good money for anything that interests them or things that are actually good but when you change something that didn’t need changing it will definitely deter people from not buying it alongside adding in other things like guests that nobody asked for and not adding kameos either was another mistake. Overall it’s hard to forget the big controversy surrounding Sektor and Cyrax back when Khaos reigns did the reveal trailer for them.
MK1 was a huge swing and a miss; I am not in the least bit surprised it's failing. NetherRealm took so many steps backwards from MK11 and have made nothing but bad decisions with this game...
While not a flawless victory, 'MKX' did have a clear vision of what it wanted to be. 'MK11 (2019)' was the point where the writers had no idea of where to go.
Personally their is a lot that I didn’t liked about MK1, but got me really irritated was that I don’t like the new looks most of the characters, I don’t know who was in charge of character design but they shit the bed and the fact that they sell costumes individually instead of bundles didn’t help
Genderswapping established characters isn't an issue itself, most fans that grew up with fighting games and related IPs would probably have embraced them had it happened a decade or so ago. The issue is WHY they've been genderswapped and the inherently dishonest attempts at playing their intentions down. These changes weren't made for the people being asked to buy the game. People are simply tired of being told what they should like, especially when it comes with an inflated asking price. 7:12 I think you're really overestimating the appeal of male Cyrax and Sektor, they're nowhere near as popular as Jade or Kano would have been. The overall roster just doesn't have mass-market appeal, Conan stands out as especially weird as the license would have cost a fair amount (both the character and likeness), and probably wouldn't incite many to buy in.
It's kind of wild to hear the usual crowd blaming everything but the actual reason for this. Even if Cyrax and Sektor were more traditional, it barely would have helped.

Invasion mode killed this game way before the Iron Babes came in. If anything, I like the gender swap (tho I still find it hypocritical that they only ever gender swap one way and never the other. For example in the beginning of the video you introduced the idea of a male Jade. NRS know damn well nobody would buy MK with male versions of the edenians girls as canon hence they went and changed the males), just wished they kept them cyber ladies, akin to Frost in MK11 instead of Iron Heart wannabes.
For me, it was definitely the price, but I would say the gender swapping wasn't welcome. There is a huge cast of female mortal kombat characters that could have been selected instead. There is no need to change males to females.

It's always the male characters who have their gender changed just because. If the developers wanted to have female Cyborgs in the game, they could have just created new characters, and that's it.

For those who played MK11 and realised they were gonna repeat the ridiculous content cycle, MK1 was dead from day one. $60 base game lacking content to begin with, overpriced micro-transactions in a rotating FOMO store, repeated waves of DLC at a high price, constantly resold as a “bundle” or “definitive edition”, excessive guest characters. It was obvious this was going to be the case, and given the ridiculous discounts post launch, and often unbalanced meta-game on day one of release, customers are actively incentivised not to pay up day one. WB is up there with EA for scummy monetisation. Controversy with the characters might have effected sales of the dlc but I’d put it down to the dwindling player base. People who got tired of MK1 fundamentally weren’t gonna come back for some more characters. I think a lot of people that bought the game decided this entry in the series wasn’t for them. DLC can’t change that.

It's not the hat, it's his face and glowing eyes that makes him recognizable for me. I guess if he is a human now glowing eyes are off, but yes, I do want him to look like a Russian guy among the asian people and I don't care if it doesn't make sense. Also his whole character changed. It's just weird.
@@ShooterEx I was still able to pick Raiden out. Even without the eyes his Default outfit looks pretty similar to his OG design, and he's the only one that wears That specific hat, Kung Lao's always has the shiny sharp edges. Plus Lao's always full of himself so I just KNEW that wasn't him.

Yeah, they uglified the characters and changed things too much. Story is also really boring. I don't even get what the point was of the main story and the DLC story. Like it is nothing special. And why is Kuai Liang Scorpion? Why is Bi-Han so cartoonishly evil? Like not even clever evil.
Also the fact that it took them almost over a year to release the towers of time, on top of other game modifications for people like me who play on PC, was just laziness. The back and forth with FPS dropping and the fact that I played invasions for like 30 minutes and found it to be just straight boring. I honestly did not like MK1. I found MK11 had everything I wanted and I played it all the way until the release of MK1. Hell, even the two sentence dialogue between characters was just off too and made zero sense. Not surprised
Like they'd make Jade a man. Although, then again, they made Tanya straight in Khaos Reigns and made her more visually appealing, so maybe Havik would do that.
@Dr490n28 Doesn't really need to be. Was still weird that they chose that character to put in a straight relationship when they usually don't. Usually, an alternate version is made gay, female or black. So, having an alternative version be straight and made more attractive was bizarre. And kinda surprising that they weren't deemed hateful for this.
Making Cyrax and Sketor females did play apart but another huge factor is that they weren’t full on cyborgs just people in battle suits not only that the chaos expansion story was just awful especially when you try to sell it for $60 the price of a full on game which is still more expensive then the Elden Ring dlc Mk1 had so much potential but they threw it all away
I believe that if making Sektor and Cyrax women was non negotiable, there was a way much better way to go about it. Step 1: Sektor and Cyrax are not their real names. It is the titles they use and inherited. Step 2: - Sektor: The female Sektor is one of the daughter of Og Male Sektor and Madam Bo. It is already confirmed that lady Sektor’s father is an armorer, so maybe while he was an active Lin Kuei he designed the Original Prototype and his daughter improved upon it into the suits we see. Og Sektor is retired and working on mass producing the new Cyber Suits. Cyrax: Og Cyrax is the father, he proudly served the Lin Kuei under the previous Grandmaster alongside Og Sektor, and while they didn’t always see eye to eye they were still friends. When his daughter is ready to join the Lin Kuei he writes up a recommendation for her but reminds her to always follow her own principles. She could still be friends with Kuai Liang but maybe scratch any entanglements the two might have had. Hell I’m still salty Hanzo got screwed and that Harumi was stolen from him. Now they have a new take on classic characters and the legacy of said classic characters are left in peace. And it didn’t even drastically change the direction they’ve got. Everybody wins. And it wasn’t even that hard. You know now that I think about it, if they retired more Og fighters by adding Kombat Kids to represent them I wouldn’t even hate that. Then you could have more room to implement contrast to an original design without hurting the original characters themselves. And then you could even kill multiple birds with 1 stone. For example, why Genderbend Jade, when you could instead make a son of Kotal and Jade, and implement both of their characters on an original take. Edenians live long as hell so age wouldn’t be a huge issue.
Maybe because in multiverse theories, nobody actually stays the same in all universes. So there's a chance you won't always be male in every universe or even human

I always thought Sektor and Cyrax were titles given like “Sub-Zero” or “Yoshimitsu” in Tekken & Soul Calibur, and the girls could have earned them from OG Sektor and Cyrax Also an Osh-Tek/Edenian warrior from Kotal & Jade would be really cool
I remember reading a notice from NRS where they apologized for making female characters sexy in the previous games, they are pandering to an audience that does not buy their product and instead giving real fans the middle finger. Actually, the Raiden change is also NOT a good one. I am a big fan of the character and making him young and asian made me mad. First of all, I am not a racist or smth, MK already has a bunch of cool asian characters and I love them. But I consider Raiden being caucasian while having asian esthetics in his appearance and name - a very cool and unique thing, which made him special. Second thing, is making him young actually made the game less diverse. Raiden was the only elderly looking character in the roster, except for old form of Shang, but they took this from him too. And I'm not even mentioning that he was a tall menacing guy to match the formidable image of the Earthrealm's Protector, which is also gone. In this game he is just another Kung Lao. A slap in the face to Raiden's fans.
It’s sad because they grew on me not long after I played the expansion. I loved Sektor off the rip as she was the only ally to Bi Han, who in my opinion got thrown to the wolves in favor of the “Heroes” (Liu Kang, Raiden, Smoke, Kuai Liang, Johnny Cage, Kenshi etc.) which quite frankly made me sick. and I grew to love Cyrax later on..just because she’s a good opposition to a spamming Stripper Tanya. and before that I was Hella against the gender swap.
It was stupid to have Kameos of characters who are also playable characters. It feels like they wasted spots that could have gone to more MK characters. It was dumb to change the story just enough to piss off the hardcore fans off. They tried to be P.C. with the women yet they have such graphic violent fatalities that are just too realistic with the face actors. I could go on, but those are some of my main gripes.
I predicted the down fall of Mk1 on day 1. It was rushed, under cooked and no new characters 🤣😂🤣 I'm just glad I returned the game back and my money back paid in full.
Is NRS purposely trying to murder a fighting game with great gameplay by genderswaping fan favorite characters? Kuai Liang Scorpion and mortal Raiden were acceptable to me, but making Cyrax and Sektor females was way too far (In my opinion).

Lol underdog on copium again... bro the game was dead on release... nothing to do with gender swaps or the DLC... the reason its been dead is because 1) the kameo system is broken meta abuse at its finest and for all intensive purposes it allows for "braindead" gameplay... if they wanted to make mk1 an assist game then they should have just made it a full blown tag team system game like marvel vs capcom or dragonball fighterz (where characters can be swapped in and have their own health bars).... because right now the assist system they have in place is just an infinite easily abusable resource (with varied cooldowns) .. its no different than just having an extra meter/gauge to abuse 2) the lack of content.. they removed the krypt which is a fan fav and they missed the opportunity to include an online konquest mode... instead they gave us .... invasi*vomits*on mode 3) balancing .... a lot of characters are overpowered (nitara, homelander, omniman, khameleon, ferra...etc.) and others are severely underpowered (subzero, shujinko, noob saibot, takeda..etc..).. the discrepancy between the low tier characters vs top tier characters is just way too vast in terms of damage output/scaling, easy of use/utility, braindead autopilot gimmicks and overall safety.. everything else is irrelivant. only nerds, undercover racists and incel redpillers care about gender swaps, race swaps and cosmetic lore s*** like that. When in reality they should be worried about having a enjoyable correctly functioning game... which this is not... because to this day mk servers do not allow African or Indian players to connect... it still has a tone of visual and gameplay relatef glitches (even after a year of continous updates/patches) and a really bad meta abusing psuedo-tag team system... the game is literally broken from the core and we have guys like underdog talking about gender swaps ruining the game (considering that people were calling the game dead way before the dlc was ever revealed).. so deluded
What ruined this game for me was how they basically took the mechanics of KOF 2000 and MVC and just slapping on a bunch of random shit and calling it a new game. Honestly, I would’ve just stuck to a remake of the first game but with some extra characters including Jade to be inserted into the mix.
I'm a female MK player--I don't know why they think that gender-swapping is a good idea, but it ain't. I'm not even a big fan of Sektor and Cyrax, but even I felt the cringe on that one. Same with Janet Cage (seriously?), and the whole split-timelines crap. They could have had a nice, concise, "two timelines"--one with Lui Kang and one with Shang Tsung--and had them fight. But no! They've never heard the phrase, "less is more," apparently. Not to mention the lack of picking multiple versions of your characters and powers, the Krypt missing, the Towers of Time missing, and Invasions sucking hard. I liked the MK1 graphics, but MK11 is far superior to this game, in scope, story and surprises. So sad. :(
Cyrax and sektor didn't kill the game the kameo system and too many characters flying around it felt like injustice not mortal kombat and I have been playing mk for about 29 years now so know. The game is broken because of that.
There are so many problems with MK1... especially at launch. The short answer is Kameos killed MK1, specifically ambush kameos that made everything safe. This bs mostly turned the game into the same repetitive crap that turned off too much of the playerbase. Similar to how MK11 characters basically had 1 or 2 ways to be played if you want to win. There's still no lobbies or practice while your searching for a match.
If they want strong female characters USE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE, bring characters back or just make news ones. Don't mess with our pre-existing characters

MK 1 was dead to me a long time ago. I don't even think I finished the story mode. It's literally the first MK I've ever owned that I've never finished the story mode

In many intro dialogues Sektor hints at a future plan for the suit initiative. My theory is they planned on doing the cyborg story line in Kombat pack 3, but since it got cancelled it’ll never get to come to fruition
and this removed the complexity of cyrex and sektor because cyrax didnt want to become a cyborg but was forced to become one and when he came back he wanted to make sure this would never happen to anyone again
While sektor willingly became one and not only that but he played a major part into turning the rest of the clan into cyborgs as well
Its even better when the leader of them made this to improve their loyalt to him only for its more loyal menber, sektor, to kill him in the name of turning more ninjas into cyborgs
The funniest part about the gender swap is that it don't even make sense within the story. Why would Liu Kang gender swap them? The only explanation I can think of and kinda make sense is in the previous timeline Cyrax and Sektor was secretly in the closet and Liu Kang knew about it and when he was crafting the MK1 timeline he decided to turn Cyrax and Sektor into females.

Mortal Kombat 1 was dead for a while. The Khaos Reigns DLC was meant to bring to back to life, only to kill it even harder.
Especially with the damn price. I'm a hardcore MK fan and all but damn dude the DLC is hella expensive and not worth it. I haven't even bought it yet due to price.

You see, cyrax and sektor didn't kill mk1. It was WB themselves. 70 dollars for the game is already kinda steep. But now they are being money hungry and overpriced the dlc and have an item shop with skins that can cost up to ten bucks.

There was also that they said the tower endings were canon, showed us Sektor in Bi-Han's ending, AND IT WAS A DUDE, then they went and changed it. They broke their own canon, they shouldn't be rewarded for that. Then theres the fact that they took away one of the eeriest parts of the story, The Cyber Initiative. Now our cyborgs are just knock-off Iron Mans rather than actually being cyberized.
SubZero’s ending shows him standing in front of someone welding (wearing blue), and he only mentions the name Sektor.
The DLC was also planned way before release, so I doubt it’s a retcon.
@nothingtosee226 As we see from the start of his ending and previous games, the Lin Kuei wears blue by default, so Sektor wearing blue before the suit tracks. Bi Han says Sektor is the one who had the idea to use science rather than magic, along with explicitly referring to Sektors genius, it's more than safe to assume that the only person present working on one of the only 2 suits we see, can only really be Sektor.
@ The Lin Kuei’s default color is not blue. Scorpion and Smoke aren’t blue. Also, the default Lin Kuei wear black as seen during the shakedown with Madame Bo and Scorpion’s wedding.
It’s not safe to assume when Sektor is now clearly a girl and the DLC was planned before launch.
If they wanted to imply that the person was Sektor, then they would’ve given them features to resemble…Sektor like red.

Yeah, there are the special ones like Kuai Liang, Tomas, Sektor, and Cyrax, but your base grunt's primary color was and still is blue, sometimes sporting an all-black uniform as well. When they refer to a character's idea and their individual genius, then show one character working on the said idea, it's probably that character whose idea it was, in this case, Sektor, who else could it be?

The love dynamic between SubZero and Sektor also couldn’t been last minute (unless they were planning a same-sex relationship).

The price was fine. Players paid $10 less for MK11's DLC, and that only had 3 DLC characters. The majority of MK fans just don't like the MK1 experience with its baffling esthetic/gameplay/kameo choice and the sales, player count and overall negativity prove that.

Mortal Kombat died because of consecutive wrong decisions. Cameo balance, bugs and errors every update, expensive DLC, expensive skins and their meager assortment, lack of cross play, lack of content,Lack of game modes (mk1 even made us miss the stupid time towers from mk11). I understand that the decision and policy of their relations with customers was influenced in many ways by WB's greed.

What killed MK1 was the multiverse lore, the Kameo setup, the gear customisations and the lame ass guest characters and the lack of skins for the dlc.

One of the most ridiculous things about this situation is the fact that they don't even look like cyborgs. They are literally two people wearing superficial armor similar to that of a warrior, but with details that resemble that of a cyborg. You can even see their faces. If you look at Cyrax and Sektor, probably the first thing you'll think is, "It's a cyborg. Do they still have any human parts to them?" because they literally have full cyborg armor and mechanical limbs. For MK 1 they literally changed the gender, put the women in identical half armor and tried to sell it in the style of "Hey, they don't care about that. We also have the new audience that buys everything that their ideology approves".
As someone who's been trying to get into MK, Sektor and Cyrax are the least of my concerns as I barely know who they are, the main issue is how fast MK games often die out. Seriously, I can't believe MK 11 was cut short.

Mortal Kombat is supposed to be scary, with frightening villains, terrifying locations and making you wonder how the heroes will get out of scary situation alive even with a fighting chance. I feel like no one says this enough but SonicFox is also part to blame for MK1's sad state, whether we like it or not Sonic is the representative of the MK community and is probably the only player the devs give a damn about so when he tweets out how great the game is, how it's just like MKX and how every character is broken the main devs see that and his sheep fanbase agreeing to it, it does more harm than good especially when you consider how the game is being excluded from tournaments and has the worst player retention than any MK game out there. All the people trying to deny the fact that the gender swap didn’t play a part in the DLC not selling well are just in denial. People will pay good money for anything that interests them or things that are actually good but when you change something that didn’t need changing it will definitely deter people from not buying it alongside adding in other things like guests that nobody asked for and not adding kameos either was another mistake.
Overall it’s hard to forget the big controversy surrounding Sektor and Cyrax back when Khaos reigns did the reveal trailer for them.
MK1 was a huge swing and a miss; I am not in the least bit surprised it's failing. NetherRealm took so many steps backwards from MK11 and have made nothing but bad decisions with this game...
While not a flawless victory, 'MKX' did have a clear vision of what it wanted to be. 'MK11 (2019)' was the point where the writers had no idea of where to go.

Genderswapping established characters isn't an issue itself, most fans that grew up with fighting games and related IPs would probably have embraced them had it happened a decade or so ago. The issue is WHY they've been genderswapped and the inherently dishonest attempts at playing their intentions down.
These changes weren't made for the people being asked to buy the game. People are simply tired of being told what they should like, especially when it comes with an inflated asking price.
7:12 I think you're really overestimating the appeal of male Cyrax and Sektor, they're nowhere near as popular as Jade or Kano would have been. The overall roster just doesn't have mass-market appeal, Conan stands out as especially weird as the license would have cost a fair amount (both the character and likeness), and probably wouldn't incite many to buy in.

Too many guest characters (or just bad guest characters) definitely doesn't help convince anyone to buy it. Like Conan the Barbarian? In 2024? Nobody that's below 50 cares about that.
Invasion mode killed this game way before the Iron Babes came in. If anything, I like the gender swap (tho I still find it hypocritical that they only ever gender swap one way and never the other. For example in the beginning of the video you introduced the idea of a male Jade. NRS know damn well nobody would buy MK with male versions of the edenians girls as canon hence they went and changed the males), just wished they kept them cyber ladies, akin to Frost in MK11 instead of Iron Heart wannabes.
For me, it was definitely the price, but I would say the gender swapping wasn't welcome. There is a huge cast of female mortal kombat characters that could have been selected instead. There is no need to change males to females.

It's always the male characters who have their gender changed just because. If the developers wanted to have female Cyborgs in the game, they could have just created new characters, and that's it.

For those who played MK11 and realised they were gonna repeat the ridiculous content cycle, MK1 was dead from day one.
$60 base game lacking content to begin with, overpriced micro-transactions in a rotating FOMO store, repeated waves of DLC at a high price, constantly resold as a “bundle” or “definitive edition”, excessive guest characters.
It was obvious this was going to be the case, and given the ridiculous discounts post launch, and often unbalanced meta-game on day one of release, customers are actively incentivised not to pay up day one.
WB is up there with EA for scummy monetisation.
Controversy with the characters might have effected sales of the dlc but I’d put it down to the dwindling player base. People who got tired of MK1 fundamentally weren’t gonna come back for some more characters. I think a lot of people that bought the game decided this entry in the series wasn’t for them. DLC can’t change that.

It's not the hat, it's his face and glowing eyes that makes him recognizable for me. I guess if he is a human now glowing eyes are off, but yes, I do want him to look like a Russian guy among the asian people and I don't care if it doesn't make sense. Also his whole character changed. It's just weird.
@@ShooterEx I was still able to pick Raiden out. Even without the eyes his Default outfit looks pretty similar to his OG design, and he's the only one that wears That specific hat, Kung Lao's always has the shiny sharp edges.
Plus Lao's always full of himself so I just KNEW that wasn't him.
Sektor & Cyrax Didn't Kill Mk 1... The Kameo Fighter And Air Combos Kill Mk 1 And Too Many DC Characters In Mk 1

Also the fact that it took them almost over a year to release the towers of time, on top of other game modifications for people like me who play on PC, was just laziness. The back and forth with FPS dropping and the fact that I played invasions for like 30 minutes and found it to be just straight boring. I honestly did not like MK1. I found MK11 had everything I wanted and I played it all the way until the release of MK1. Hell, even the two sentence dialogue between characters was just off too and made zero sense. Not surprised
Like they'd make Jade a man. Although, then again, they made Tanya straight in Khaos Reigns and made her more visually appealing, so maybe Havik would do that.

Making Cyrax and Sketor females did play apart but another huge factor is that they weren’t full on cyborgs just people in battle suits not only that the chaos expansion story was just awful especially when you try to sell it for $60 the price of a full on game which is still more expensive then the Elden Ring dlc Mk1 had so much potential but they threw it all away
I believe that if making Sektor and Cyrax women was non negotiable, there was a way much better way to go about it.
Step 1: Sektor and Cyrax are not their real names. It is the titles they use and inherited.
Step 2:
- Sektor: The female Sektor is one of the daughter of Og Male Sektor and Madam Bo. It is already confirmed that lady Sektor’s father is an armorer, so maybe while he was an active Lin Kuei he designed the Original Prototype and his daughter improved upon it into the suits we see. Og Sektor is retired and working on mass producing the new Cyber Suits.
Cyrax: Og Cyrax is the father, he proudly served the Lin Kuei under the previous Grandmaster alongside Og Sektor, and while they didn’t always see eye to eye they were still friends. When his daughter is ready to join the Lin Kuei he writes up a recommendation for her but reminds her to always follow her own principles. She could still be friends with Kuai Liang but maybe scratch any entanglements the two might have had. Hell I’m still salty Hanzo got screwed and that Harumi was stolen from him.
Now they have a new take on classic characters and the legacy of said classic characters are left in peace. And it didn’t even drastically change the direction they’ve got. Everybody wins. And it wasn’t even that hard.
You know now that I think about it, if they retired more Og fighters by adding Kombat Kids to represent them I wouldn’t even hate that. Then you could have more room to implement contrast to an original design without hurting the original characters themselves. And then you could even kill multiple birds with 1 stone.
For example, why Genderbend Jade, when you could instead make a son of Kotal and Jade, and implement both of their characters on an original take. Edenians live long as hell so age wouldn’t be a huge issue.
Maybe because in multiverse theories, nobody actually stays the same in all universes. So there's a chance you won't always be male in every universe or even human
1000% agree with this would be a good way to go about Sektor and Cyrax. I always thought Sektor and Cyrax were titles given like “Sub-Zero” or “Yoshimitsu” in Tekken & Soul Calibur, and the girls could have earned them from OG Sektor and Cyrax

I remember reading a notice from NRS where they apologized for making female characters sexy in the previous games, they are pandering to an audience that does not buy their product and instead giving real fans the middle finger. Sweet Baby Inc or not they are trying to appeal to the "modern audience" instead of fans.

Actually, the Raiden change is also NOT a good one. I am a big fan of the character and making him young and asian made me mad.
First of all, I am not a racist or smth, MK already has a bunch of cool asian characters and I love them. But I consider Raiden being caucasian while having asian esthetics in his appearance and name - a very cool and unique thing, which made him special.
Second thing, is making him young actually made the game less diverse. Raiden was the only elderly looking character in the roster, except for old form of Shang, but they took this from him too.
And I'm not even mentioning that he was a tall menacing guy to match the formidable image of the Earthrealm's Protector, which is also gone. In this game he is just another Kung Lao. A slap in the face to Raiden's fans.

It’s sad because they grew on me not long after I played the expansion. I loved Sektor off the rip as she was the only ally to Bi Han, who in my opinion got thrown to the wolves in favor of the “Heroes” (Liu Kang, Raiden, Smoke, Kuai Liang, Johnny Cage, Kenshi etc.) which quite frankly made me sick. and I grew to love Cyrax later on..just because she’s a good opposition to a spamming Stripper Tanya.
and before that I was Hella against the gender swap.
It was stupid to have Kameos of characters who are also playable characters. It feels like they wasted spots that could have gone to more MK characters.
It was dumb to change the story just enough to piss off the hardcore fans off.
They tried to be P.C. with the women yet they have such graphic violent fatalities that are just too realistic with the face actors.
I could go on, but those are some of my main gripes.
I predicted the down fall of Mk1 on day 1. It was rushed, under cooked and no new characters 🤣😂🤣 I'm just glad I returned the game back and my money back paid in full.

1) the kameo system is broken meta abuse at its finest and for all intensive purposes it allows for "braindead" gameplay... if they wanted to make mk1 an assist game then they should have just made it a full blown tag team system game like marvel vs capcom or dragonball fighterz (where characters can be swapped in and have their own health bars).... because right now the assist system they have in place is just an infinite easily abusable resource (with varied cooldowns) .. its no different than just having an extra meter/gauge to abuse
2) the lack of content.. they removed the krypt which is a fan fav and they missed the opportunity to include an online konquest mode... instead they gave us .... invasi*vomits*on mode
3) balancing .... a lot of characters are overpowered (nitara, homelander, omniman, khameleon, ferra...etc.) and others are severely underpowered (subzero, shujinko, noob saibot, takeda..etc..).. the discrepancy between the low tier characters vs top tier characters is just way too vast in terms of damage output/scaling, easy of use/utility, braindead autopilot gimmicks and overall safety..
everything else is irrelivant. only nerds, undercover racists and incel redpillers care about gender swaps, race swaps and cosmetic lore s*** like that. When in reality they should be worried about having a enjoyable correctly functioning game... which this is not... because to this day mk servers do not allow African or Indian players to connect... it still has a tone of visual and gameplay relatef glitches (even after a year of continous updates/patches) and a really bad meta abusing psuedo-tag team system... the game is literally broken from the core and we have guys like underdog talking about gender swaps ruining the game (considering that people were calling the game dead way before the dlc was ever revealed).. so deluded
What ruined this game for me was how they basically took the mechanics of KOF 2000 and MVC and just slapping on a bunch of random shit and calling it a new game. Honestly, I would’ve just stuck to a remake of the first game but with some extra characters including Jade to be inserted into the mix.
I'm a female MK player--I don't know why they think that gender-swapping is a good idea, but it ain't. I'm not even a big fan of Sektor and Cyrax, but even I felt the cringe on that one. Same with Janet Cage (seriously?), and the whole split-timelines crap. They could have had a nice, concise, "two timelines"--one with Lui Kang and one with Shang Tsung--and had them fight. But no! They've never heard the phrase, "less is more," apparently. Not to mention the lack of picking multiple versions of your characters and powers, the Krypt missing, the Towers of Time missing, and Invasions sucking hard. I liked the MK1 graphics, but MK11 is far superior to this game, in scope, story and surprises. So sad. :(
Cyrax and sektor didn't kill the game the kameo system and too many characters flying around it felt like injustice not mortal kombat and I have been playing mk for about 29 years now so know. The game is broken because of that.
There are so many problems with MK1... especially at launch. The short answer is Kameos killed MK1, specifically ambush kameos that made everything safe. This bs mostly turned the game into the same repetitive crap that turned off too much of the playerbase. Similar to how MK11 characters basically had 1 or 2 ways to be played if you want to win. There's still no lobbies or practice while your searching for a match.
