@@mikesalt8248 All amps fry valves on the lower attenuated settings. It's because on the lower settings the amp is basically wide open all the time. You even play a Marshall 100 watt stack wide open all the time you start cooking valves. Hell the basic fact of life is the genuine overdriven tones that guitarists love are hard on amps tubes. Another basic fact is no matter what the amp brand is if you want genuine hard overdrive from tubes then you have to be willing pay the price of occasionally frying a tube.
Personally I just think I'm at the point of just buying a well designed solid state amp with good playing dynamics like the Roland Blues Cube and just be done with ALL tube maintenance hassle.

  • @blakeoms
    @blakeoms 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

You sold me on the bugera, I've only played solid state amps for over 10 years and I am about to go in and try the tube amps out for myself for the first time since I'm primarily a drummer, but you did a good example of the two. Straight to the point and no random riffs between differences. Super helpful!!

Marshall sure has gone to hell over the last several decades.
An old solid state Lead 12 from the 80s sounds better than that thing, it's pathetic.
Bugera's Infinium line is pretty amazing for the price, I have the Bugera 1960 head, and that thing is ridiculous.
Jet City also makes some incredible sounding amps for the price.
Seems like if you want to get a decent brand new amp from Marshall nowadays, you better be prepared to spend thousands of dollars on their British made amps.
You deserve tons of credit for making an honest review, instead of using production techniques to make the amp sound better than it really does like so many other TH-camr do,.... thanks.

Delay pedal should go in the effects loop, which Bugera V5 doesn't have I believe. We put delays on the final distorted signal, putting a distortion on delay sounds as bad as I expected.

The Bugera is a great modding platform. I stabilized the enclosure, swapped the speaker (Celestion 8-15 instead of the Turbosound) and added a treble bleed to the volume pot. Huge difference but too crunchy for me (with the stock tubes). Changing the 12AX7 against a 12AU7 gave me the clean headroom I wanted but still allows me to "go dirty". The Celestion speaker provides more clarity and punch than the stock Turbosound speaker but is still not top. My next attempt is to swap the 8-15 against an alnico speaker. But for the form factor and price the Bugera V5 is really great.

I swapped the original Bugera 12AX7A for a NOS Sylvania grey plate 5751 and the EL84 for a NOS BEL (Mullard) 6BQ5 and the sound fattened up and the over brightness vanished. The Turbosound has improved with some hours so I'll probably leave it. Never thought of going down as low as an 12AU7 . I could try that later as I have a bunch of those from organ pulls.

I have A Bugera V55 and Fender Blues Deluxe reissue 40W. Ironically, the Fender is much loader at 40W than my V55. I like the V55 cause it has a switch to cut it down to 30W. It's a great amp for the price and I haven't an issue with it in 6 years. I tend to find Bugera to be more on the Fender side of tone than Marshall. Both my amps are huge and heavy to move around the house. I have a Cube 60 I use as a practice amp and it does almost a good job at getting a tube tone. But it's still hollow in sound and unlike a tube. The Clean channel is great.
Since I'm more a Fender amp person and looking for something small for living room just plugin and play practice, this V5 seems to hit the nail on the head. Your review is very helpful in my decision process.

Hi!! Nice review man! I own a V5 and I’m happy with it but I can’t make it sound similar like you do... My guitar is a 2008 fender strat mexico improved with two Dimarzio cruiser pick ups and one Dimarzio tone zone s, I replaced 500k condensers instead the original ones and I play with a drive and boost pedal...
As a said, I like the sound I have but yours is far better than mine, what could be the reason for I can't sound as nice as you? Your sound is so powerfull and full of definition.. Im in love with it haha
did you replaced valves? wich ones? or you’ve made some modification on the amp?
could be my guitar is not good enough to sound like this?
I have to say that i play at home so I can't use the amp with volume's knob higher than 2, i live with my parents and if I play louder than this they'd complain... could it be the reason that makes the amp seems to sound worse than yours?
I have to say that i’m looking for the sound you get with telecaster, the high frequences are explosive and low frequences sounds with much definition, two most important things i need on my sound...
The sound you get with the LP is very impressive too on high frequences but I don’t like how low frequences sounds, there’s much less definition in comparison with low frequencies you get with telecaster
thanks man!! (And sorry for my english, I’m a beginner 😅 hope you understand my questions..)

Thanks dude. The new DSL40CR is a killer amp. The thing is though you have to dial them in a particular way with the master volumes up all the way or it doesn't shine. You then can adjust the channel volumes as per normal. :-) . See if you can find my live clip using it and see what you think. I won't be buying any of the Origin amps myself, they aren't my sort of thing. They are all made in Vietnam yep and the Bugera is Chinese made.

    • @ajjay7726
      @ajjay7726 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think it wouldn't be fair : the price and the quality are definitly not the same. You could buy almost 3 Bugerra for a BJ xD Unfortunatly, there's no Fender at the same price. The Bass Breaker is the cheapest fender amp and it costs 100 € (hi from france !^^) more than Buggera/Marshall.
But it could be interesting though.

    • @AndrewLewisHowe
      @AndrewLewisHowe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ignore "ajjay". it's not about price point, it's about the circuit and speaker. The Bugera's a single-ended class A tube amp. One pre-amp tube, one power sections tube, going into an 8" speaker. The BJ is a push-pull, class A/B tube amp. Two pre-amp tubes and two power section tubes going into a 12" speaker.
They DO sound similar though because of how they're voiced. Unlike a Epiphone Valve Junior head, which is grainy and shrill, the Bugera is voiced for warmth, like a BJ. I LOVE my Bugera, but seriously DISlike my Valve Junior, although it has it's uses. Both 5 watt tube amps that sound nothing alike.
The Bugera will never compete with a BJ for sheer volume (5w vs 15w), or tone shaping due to it's minimal control set.
That said, the single power amp tube in the Bugera gives you the even-order harmonics that sound 'sweet' and a bit more 'ragged' to our ears, while the BJ will give you odd-order harmonics that will come across as smoother.
      Both are absolutely good amps.
But if you want a low price 15 watt amp much like the BJ, get a Monoprice 15 watter. It sounds VERY good, for $200, like a cross between a Blues Junior and an AC15. Real spring reverb, standby switch, and a four band EQ. FANTASTIC little amp for guitar OR harmonica, if you're a bluesman like myself. If I had to choose one 'desert island' amp, it would be that one. Flexible enough to do nearly everything but ultra-high-gain stuff.

Did you break in the Marshall speaker? The Bugera is broken in, right? Not that it would necessarily make a difference in the comparison...

My origin 5 needed 12 hour continuous break in, then it came alive. The amp sounded a bit quieter after break in so needed crank more, which also improved tone. Not really a strummers amp, great for thick tones and resonance and pedals. Well mine does. Sounded like cardboard to start with.

SORRY! But the jury is IN with the verdict:BUGERA FTW!
NO comparison, The Bug was just more rounded & fuller sounding than the Marshall. The Marshall sounded like a tin can! (Different speakers too!)
BOTH of those would benefit being played thru a bigger/better speaker. (Tho I dare say the Bugera would still sound better regardless!) I always regretted selling mine!

Bugera wins it for me ! The Marshall was brighter, but the extreme brightness is almost unusable and thinner. Those that say they sounded terrible should realize these are the type of amps that are often used in the studio to make the recordings we all know and love! Layla was recorded on a Fender Champ amp! They may not do metal, but great for rock and blues!

I have a Marshall, DSL 100HR head with the Marshall slanted cab with 4x12 Celestions in the cab and I also have this Bugera V5 Infinium that Shane is playing in this video and everything he said about this Bugera is 100% accurate and true. I have had so many tube amps by Fender, Vox, Marshall, etc etc and I have also had solid state amps by, Katana, Orange, etc etc and this here Bugera amp can not only keep up with the best of them but it also beats many of them to the finish line. This little guy might be small and cute looking but trust me its a beast and it will bite you lol. If your contemplating on purchasing this amp dont think any longer and buy it, you will not be sorry. A few years ago this very amp was almost a $100 dollars cheaper and because of the redesigning to make it what it is today the prices kept sky rocketing on it and at about $280 - $300 dollars it is still a great deal for how this amp sounds. Other amps that dont sound this good cost double and way much more.

Shame the cheaper small Marshalls always come with wimpy speakers and sound a bit thin. I had to put a 12" Veteran 30 clone in my DSL5c to bring it to life and make it the versatile amp it should have been. I imagine the even tinier 8" speaker in the Origin 5 does the little guy no favours :(

The Bugera sounded better in the majority of circumstances to me, save the straight flush comparison, I actually preferred the sound of the Origin 5 at that particular moment. I’ve just ordered an Origin 20 as being more suitable for me, but I would certainly look at the bugera if I wanted a 5 watter

  • @rray303

Great comparison, but the Origin series maybe should be compared with the bugera V55 which has 6L6 tubes, and not with the V5 which has EL84 (the same of his bigger brother V22)
So a most fair comparison should be:
Marshall Origin series (50) vs Bugera V55
Marshall DSL series vs Bugera V5/22

I think the Marshall has better note definition while the Bugera has a fuller tone. But to be honest, I really don't care for either. They both sound "farty" due to their 8" speakers. I hope you do a review of the Origin 50C, which has a 12“ speaker. I believe that Marshall made a mistake by not putting 12" speakers in the 3 different models of the Origin combos. Love your channel, BTW!

  • @blottoinchcago

No bias here either.. I am a fan of Marshall and an owner.. and my practice amp ..well it's a Bugera T5 infinium head on top of an Orange PPC112 with a Celestion 12" Vintage speaker. ( I upgraded the tubes although for $160 for the head I think I paid ... still sort of blown away with the sound and the quality for the value.... In your shootout ... If you had bleeped out the names of each amp, and I wasn't looking. the good ol blind sound test.. Marshall took it in the shorts !

    Hi there,
thanks for the comparison video. Honest and unbiased as per. I appreciate it’s not the model you are reviewing here but just wanted to mention my experience with Bugera kit. Hopefully you don’t object?
I’d been umming and ahhing for ages over the Bugera V22 Infinium as I didn’t really believe that for such little cash it could be quite as good as claimed. I’ve used some (cheap as they come) Beringer pedals and been very satisfied with their performance.
Although a little different, with that in mind I thought WTF just buy it. It would be a massive hassle, but I could always return it if it turned out to be a mistake anyway.
Recently took the plunge, bought the V22 head along the 212TS cabinet. It’s going absolutely nowhere and it’s far exceeded my expectations. I’m astonished by the quality of the tone I’m getting and just wish bought it ages ago rather than fannying around. I’m very, very happy. Unless, unlike the majority of us, you have money to burn and are able to justify spending a good few thousand, I’d confidently advise (obviously dependant on an individuals requirements) this gear every time.
I know it’s not a consideration here but it actually looks fantastic too.
Thanks again for all your enjoyable videos.
    Cheers,
    Si.

Yes , I have the 5 watt and 50 watt , and I think it’s a good video, but doing a review on the amps using other pedals it clouds up the sound a lot and it’s not a very true sound of the amps. That’s my thought. If you’re using fender telecaster it’s not a very good guitar. I own 2 American Stratocasters and 3 Gibson’s and totally different sounds.5 Marshall original amps and 2- 50 watt head and 1-tsl 60 watt heads. And Gibson sounds the best played though Marshall amps . Thank you kindly for your videos 🎸⚓️🇺🇸
