That turbulence is standard operating procedure coming into salt lake city in summer afternoons. The thermals that come off the mountain range there create a lot of turbulence on warm days. Makes great hangliding or parasailing along the Wasatch front.
Hey Adam, those are static wicks protruding off the back of the wings, and not lightning rods! They allow static electricity build up to bleed off the aircraft. Safe travels!
Flaps are the flight surfaces nearest the cabin. Ailerons are smaller near the wing tip. Spoilers are the larger ones toward the middle of the wing. They slow down the plane by stopping airflow, creating drag. If Lightining strikes a plane it can create St.Elmo’s fire. Maybe with the static rods on the fairings that doesn’t happen any more. Went to LA in the mid sixties and took off from O’Hare over an approaching thunderstorm. Awesome to see lighting going down from clouds beneath us!
I always find your airplane travel vlogs so soothing. Your voice and the white noise from the plane is so calming 😌. I do agree with others that TSA Pre✅ is worth it. We don’t travel a ton and we love it!!! Stay well, Adam! Love from Wisconsin!
flew into salt lake airport recently and was also struck by its beauty. spent just a brief time there before driving up to Yellowstone. would love to go back and explore more, when its a bit cooler. I noticed many places out west do not use air conditioning, even the restaurants. very strange. I was informed by a Yellowstone employee that the electrical grid in the park cannot support air conditioning. i'll be interested to see what areas you explore next. And Delta is by far my favorite airline. Best customer service. And starbucks coffee.
Oh my gosh I would have taken the $800!! John Wayne has the steepest take off of any airport, because of the noise over the houses in Newport Beach. The engines are throttled back to slow the aircraft down to get more lift.
Yeah, I've flown out of John Wayne airport a couple of times and those noise-abatement takeoffs are a little un-nerving if you are not prepared for it. You take off fast and go to a very steep climb, then they throttle back the engines, and you get a "floating" and a little "sinking" feeling until they get over the ocean and then engines go back to normal. Another reason for that steep take-off roll is that John Wayne airport has a very SHORT runway, and the local surrounding cities won't let the runways be lengthened. At least that is what I was told by some local folks there.
"Technology amazes me" you said. What blows my mind is how quickly we came from Kittyhawk in 1903 to the first Transatlantic passenger flight in 1939. We've been masters of the skies ever since!
My Dad who was born in 1917 remembers when as a schoolboy his class would all run outside when they heard an airplane flying nearby.. from that to watching moon landings . We have all lived through so many changes .🤔
The internet started around 94. So in a little less then 30 years we have gone from dial up to everything being reliable on the technology. So why do people say that time traveling can not be possible? The Terminator movies are becoming Sci-Fa!
The procedure you spoke of, the regrading of the engines after takeoff is what they call, noise abatement. There are a set of microphones off the end of the runway and if your too loud you can get fined. So you get what they call a high deck angle so you get higher up and away from the microphones. You also pull power back, not off !!!!! Then once you’ve passed the sound sensitive area on the ground it’s business as usual. How do I know this, I’m a retired corporate pilot and took off from John Wayne as well as many other airports that have the same procedure for takeoff oh so many times. Always fun .
Looking out the window always makes me think of the old black and white movie about the creature out on the wing …either Hitchcock hour or the twilight zone it was a classic 😅
Always love your in-flight footage. Probably the best shots here on YT. And the way you do the coffee shots - makes for a perfect Starbucks promo w/a Delta tie-in. Very soothing and peaceful ambiance...well, until the wing started shaking. Anyway - fantastic vid. Hope you stay safe and be careful in your journeys. Pray SLC treats you well. Until the next entry, take care, bud.
7:40 - you're correct, John Wayne has a super strict noise ordinance in place with a lot of considerations at takeoff. Airbus planes command you to pull back the throttle to the climb setting so there's always a thrust reduction, but especially noticeable at this airport. I fly 737s and do not enjoy flying in/out of this airport.
Just in time ! The leaves are just starting to turn here in Utah . Might I suggest Silver Lake in Brighton (Big Cottonwood Canyon) and Cascade Springs in American Fork Canyon. You won't regret it so beautiful especially in fall ... Also for something quirky and unique the witch displays are up at Gardner Village...
Big smiles from us as you show SNA rental car return, small security line, Ruby's diner where we have eaten a few times and the tourist items available for purchase. Haven't been back yet since pandemic and looking forward to it!!! Thank u!!
I’ll be flying home tomorrow from SLC so your video has awesome timing. If you haven’t already done so, i highly recommend going to the Family History/Genealogy center in Temple Square. I provided by grandfather’s info and was able to get my family tree going back to the 1400s. Well worth the time spent!
Those lightning rods are to discharge static build up from friction with the air. However I still wanna see what you described! Hope you enjoyed the new Salt Lake Airport( opened about 2 years ago). My family loves it although if you have to go or come from terminal B it's a much longer walk. Hope you make it to the sandlot filming locations of you haven't yet.
That brought back some memories of 35 years of flying around the country, so glad I don't have to do that anymore. One of my last flights i took was to Salt lake city.
Yes, I am surprised he does not mention that, but maybe he is afraid the flight attendant will hear him and get upset. Years ago my son told the stewardess there was something on the wing in a William Shatner voice and she was not amused!
We were thinking of flying to Orange County Airport in Nov from Des Moines IA to Cali through Allegiant as they fly out of & to certain airports. 5 hr drive to save $2K from home to fly over! 👀 Well worth it
I thought your flight number sounded a little familiar. One leg of my vacation that I took last week was Delta 2427. The numbers were just reversed for yours. Yeah I went through a lot of turbulence coming back to Orlando cause of the afternoon storms. The pilot actually had to stop the drinks and snacks from being served and told the flight attendants to get seated. I just watched the movie I was watching, “It’s A Wonderful Life” and didn’t even worry about it even though the plane was being jostled a lot.~~ Even though I don’t like being stuck in an airport for many hours I don’t think I would have passed up an offer of $800 to get on a later flight.
Just 10 days ago I flew into Salt Lake City to transfer to Minneapolis. Where the airport is pretty, the lay out is nuts. I had to take steps down, walk a ways and then take stairs up to the next level and all the way down to the end to board my next flight. The airlines was also Delta. I was exhausted by the time I boarded my flight. I really don't like the Salt Lake City airport
I know the Salt Lake Airport well. It is weird to see you here in Utah and in CA near where I grew up. Happy and safe travels especially with the hurricane coming.

HEY ATW...YOU RASCAL! YOU'RE THE SULTAN OF SURPRISE! The Ace of Amazement! The Bishop of Bewilderment! I still believe you are heading for Fear Factory! You mentioned that you were going to Lagoon Amusement park!?!! Fear Factory has to be one of the scariest venues I've seen advertised! Their effects, actors and background are on par with Hollywood. I've only seen lit up walkthroughs. I can't imagine how scary a full on evening in the darkness with crowds would be! I'm glad your flight was safe and I can't wait for your next episode! Good day, sir!

Called a noise abatement takeoff. Because the runways are so short at John wayne, they have to use max thrust to get to V1/V2 speed in the takeoff length. Think they just recently remodeled the Salt Lake City Airport. So it’s pretty fresh all that fancy-ness. I haven’t flown in there for at least a year or so and it didn’t look like that. Haha
I was flying home from SLC in 1995. When the captain came on, and said, "Folks be patient we are trying to get the landing gear to come down to land safely, we will have to circle the airport for a few times first". I love your Come Fly With Me vlogs! I don't have to keep my elbows tucked in to my ribcage, I can get more cream for my coffee without ticking off the attendant, and best of all, I don't exit past the gift shop on the way to the compact SUV! Thank you! Have fun in SLC and the area! Hope you're able to take us to Fear Factory! And tell Sister Woo hey from all of us out here in Woo-ville 👋
Some of the most phenomenal National Parks are in Utah. Bryce, Zion, Canyon land, Arches just to name a few. Adam visited some of them earlier this year with his family.
Adam, will you be attending FanX? I am there all 3 days...You are going to love it if you go. I might be able to get you front row on some of the big ballroom interviews. I hope you come.
The Bluejays, the Ray's and the Mariner's are in the race for the AL Wild card. I'm a Mariner's fan so you know who I want to earn their spot in the post season. Good luck to all of the Bluejay and Ray's fan's as well. (Although I hope that your team chokes!)
Adam, if you like chocolate you should try out Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory there chocolates have been compared to Godiva, Fanny Farmer and have beaten them.
Adam, are you going to look up Jon Levi while you're in SLC? I've heard him quote you in his Sunday AM shows. He lives outside there in the country, off the grid pretty much. 🙂

I have to agree Greg. Flying is simply amazing. I flew U control gas airplanes as a child. I built most of them from a balsa kit. The good old days!
My Dad who was born in 1917 remembers when as a schoolboy his class would all run outside when they heard an airplane flying nearby.. from that to watching moon landings . We have all lived through so many changes .🤔
Masters of the skies? No. What we actually do is cram 200 people in a metal tube at 35,000 feet for 2 hours and dare God to kill us.
The internet started around 94. So in a little less then 30 years we have gone from dial up to everything being reliable on the technology. So why do people say that time traveling can not be possible?

Or the fact that we went from 1903 to landing on the moon in 66 years. That's so crazy to me.

It's always unnerving when the entire wing is bouncing up and down mid-flight! Glad you made it safely to Salt Lake! 🙂
I just think of the bouncing like my car going over railroad tracks. It's noisy but nothing happens. Those planes are tough enough to handle it
If the wing wasn’t flexible, it would break off
Another excellent air travel vlog. ✈

I fly Delta twice a month. I found your Delta experience to be quite common. Sometimes overbooked, sometimes slight delays and most common is turbulence, particularly when flying on the west coast. Orange County is a small regional airport and it's always easy to get through security

Not sure if you knew or recall, but John Wayne airport is where Harrison Ford accidentally landed his private plane on the taxiway back in Feb 2017

And tell Sister Woo hey from all of us out here in Woo-ville 👋
interesting VIDEO, Iwould have taken the money and waited for next flight .ha ha. Excellent video.thankyou
Is that silver duct tape on the wing???
🎶Leaving on a jet plane.. don't know when I'll be back again...🎶 Come back and visit soon 💕
Would like to see what a 14 day adventure costs with flights, rental car, motels, and entertainment, gonna guess 4 grand lol.
Never had a huge interest in visiting Utah but now I feel like I MUST go to see that beautiful airport!!! 😍
Some of the most phenomenal National Parks are in Utah. Bryce, Zion, Canyon land, Arches just to name a few. Adam visited some of them earlier this year with his family.
@@kimberlysmith8206 definitely on my list of places to travel now!
Adam, will you be attending FanX? I am there all 3 days...You are going to love it if you go. I might be able to get you front row on some of the big ballroom interviews. I hope you come.
Hi Adam how's it going after Utah are you going back to California or fly back to Florida.
The Bluejays, the Ray's and the Mariner's are in the race for the AL Wild card. I'm a Mariner's fan so you know who I want to earn their spot in the post season. Good luck to all of the Bluejay and Ray's fan's as well. (Although I hope that your team chokes!)
SeaUsRise :D
There's a chance you could be seeing Adam in October.
I was hoping the O's got a wild card spot. But looking pretty bleak.
Those "grids" as you call them are spoilers. They slow the aircraft down by reducing the air flow over the wing, which is where lift is created.
