Note: The model has had about 1.5 to 2 hours in each direction. To get it to go at all without stopping, I had to have it on full power (it's real life maximum speed was about 15mph). In reverse, it needed pushing a few times first as well. Now it will run in both directions and slower but lunges forward and still squeaks. It's going back.
Update: Hornby wrote today and stated that this was the first problem they had heard of with this model! I am not joking..I asked their QC department if they actually watched TH-cam. Another 'Tuber had similar running issues that were cured with a decoder that actually fits, so before returning it to Hornby, I will give that a go and report back. The decoder is due to arrive on Saturday.
For a loco with limited weight and limited wheelbase, it's not going to run on anything other than surgically clean rails. However, the squeaking suggests something isn't lubricated.
@@furripupau Hi, I clean the track before running a new loco. This behaviour has absolutely nothing to do with track. It behaves exactly the same on a test track and other TH-camr's have had identical problems with this locomotive. Others have the same squeak too. I have seen one example working well.
Lovely model but the mechanism seems tricky. As a previous commenter mentioned this is the second time I’ve seen one fail at running properly. Rgds, Joachim
Hi, very cool looking loco with excellent packaging, makes Bachmann’s packaging look woeful in comparison, I hope this loco is built to last as Hornby don’t do spares unfortunately, thanks for sharing.
It is beautiful Michael. I wouldn't judge the running until you have given it a proper run in. My most recent Rapido Canadian loco ran extremely poorly straight out of the box but a full hour and a half later of running in at different speeds and in both directions it is now really good.

Judging by the quick nudge to move it why am I reminded of Kirk and Scotty bit era 1 version. Can just imagine conversation from those two figures..... Lol
you are also missing its side step. seems Hornby have messed this loco up a bit. Missing side steps on all I have seen. HM7000 does NOT fit, shows on website it does, and the instructions clearly show the image of the 7000 as you can see the bluetooth aerial on the image.
I can't say I am surprised about their Next 18 decoder not fitting a it is oversize for the standard and they admitted that to Trading Standards. They were supposed to be modifying it though.
Looks good but don't think I will ever own one as I don't model era 1 nor do I make models or layouts of the national railway museum and it's sites lol. It's a maybe from me but great informative video
I am a real novice, but did wonder if the locomotive might simply be too light. I recently scratch built a very short loco and found that the addition of a surprising amount of weight dramatically improved performance - especially across points?
@@neilbedford5082 Weight certainly helps. Surprisingly this doesn't really stop on points, although I thought it would. For example, this is better over points than Accurascale's Andrew Barclay. It just squeaks and lunges forwards. It's worse in reverse.
Hi mate I hope you are well Yes they seems to be a few with running issues and squeaks it not just your. It a work of art but the issues let it down. Keep safe ARP
Don't be down. It's a shame the engine doesn't run as it should, yet I don't think it's all doom and gloom at your end. There are some Christmassy videos on my channel, if you want to watch them. Fancy some Christmas Dinner onboard my N Gauge steam-hauled special train? Feel free to copy the video. Whether or not you credit me for it is entirely up to you.
Always run a loco for at least 30 minutes in each direction at a moderate speed before trying to control it properly to make sure all the gearing has bedded in. I use an oval of Kato Unitrack laid on a hard floor and run a loco 15 minutes forward and 15 minutes backwards, then turn it round and repeat. That way any non properly aligned pick ups should be noted due to poor performance going round the cuves one way or the another - worse was a Bachmann 7F. Should anything fall off that should be readilly found on the floor.

@@JPoulAndersson I just hope the replacement works ok
Small and very beautiful, I think this is amazing. I’m sure you will soon get the running problem fixed 😊
It's going back Mandy
Oh no, shall you replace it? 😢
@mandy4242 I wrote ot Hornby the day I got it

IT is a great looking model let down by poor performance. Hopefully the replacement will be better.
Hornby do spares, libellous comment.

Looks like a problem one , pity as looks great
@@howarth004 Yes disappointing Dave. I have emailed them about a return or fix.
Does sound like some lubrication is needed, but not sure what type the experts would recommend for this one...
It will help with the squeak but I don't think it will help the surging/jerky motion that is worse in reverse

Second review I've seen with a squeaky & jerky motion... what a disappointment
Indeed it is
Something sounds to tight to me sqweeking away not quite right, looks OK but not quite right in assembly
It's still squeaking and lunges forward when moving, even after a lot of running in so I am returning it.
