Introducing the 2025 Toyota MR2 - The Ultimate Affordable Mid-Engine Sports Car?
Toyota has been generating excitement with its recent sports car lineup, including the 86, Supra, and GR Yaris and GR Corolla. Now, the buzz continues with the anticipated return of the MR2 in 2025. This iconic mid-engine sports car, last seen in 2007, is set to make a comeback, promising a blend of fun, lightness, and affordability.
The new MR2 is expected to feature a one-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine from Suzuki, delivering around 120-150 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This engine, used in Suzuki models since 2015, offers a good balance of performance and efficiency. Toyota might also include mild hybrid technology to enhance driving smoothness.
Car enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn that the MR2 will come with a manual transmission, a rare feature in today’s sports cars. This manual option will make the MR2 stand out among mid-engine competitors, as only a few, like Porsche and Lotus, offer this choice.
The new MR2 will be small, nimble, and lightweight, aiming to match the original model's weight of about 2,200 pounds. This lightweight design will contribute to sharp handling and an engaging driving experience. Daihatsu is handling the design, and while it's unclear if the car will be a soft top or include a hardtop option, it will likely feature a removable roof.

I have a C5 Aircross with the same suspension. A great ride it is not. Rides like a brick compared to earlier models with hydraulic suspension. I have owned and serviced Citroens since 1970 but will never buy another new Citroen, unless of course they bring back the hydraulic suspension.

The C5-X hybrid has adaptive suspension, it levels the car like the old hydractive suspension. It's not the same as in the C5 Aircross.

It has Laser Adaptive Suspension. It scans the road ahead and adjust the shock rate to increase or lesson the shock rate, still relying on normal springs for the springing. It won't get anywhere near the ride of the Hydraulic Suspension. It will be better than the average car on the road though, as is my C5 Aircross.
