I love the saving lives vs. ice cream metaphor. And beyond it just being sad if no one made ice cream, that mental boost of an ice cream now and then could be what keeps the life saver going in their job - we all work together to make our world work.

I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoy your videos (both channels). I "stream" them as background when I'm working because you're calming; then I watch them when I'm not working so I can watch and learn. You've got a great presentation style - relatable, funny. Thanks for sharing you with us. See you in 2025!

Thank you for making ice cream. It DOES help. You're giving people the treat they need, a place to recover, before they stand up and go back into the fray. You're amazing, and THANK YOU for taking a break so you can keep making ice cream.

Absolutely inspiring!! Thanks for making ice-cream. I live in Israel and finding your channel saved my mental health this year. I'm from Brazil and I have never experienced war or conflicts before. It was a year of many struggles and I found myself being inspired by your channel, your story telling and your attitude in general. Thank you so much for all the ice cream, see you soon ❤

Re: gardening. Start slow. Start with just the plants that you know. Then learn a new plant every year. (Not a whole garden's worth, but expand as you go, instead of plowing an acre the first year). Set up automated watering system. (So that if you miss a week, there's still plants there when you get back.) Gardening is certainly doable if you do as you go. It's like wardrobe. Add one dress at a time, instead of hiring a fashion designer. 💕🌞🌵😷

For the larger projects, what do you think of parts? Like part 1-7 over seven weeks. (Or whatever number of parts) Cosplay, oil painting, and other projects are not normally done in one week. And as a bonus or post #8, post all the parts in-one.

    • @cassandraletton
      @cassandraletton 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +4

Charlie addressed this in a video on her 2nd channel, about the mental need to finish a project in one video & not doing them in parts.

    • @danielalaatz57
      @danielalaatz57 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

I completely understand that. But still it would be cool, especially with projects that take longer. Giving us a chance to appreciate the time it takes if we only get to see one weeks process every week.
Maybe some projects that feels more natural to split because it's done in parts anyway.
But in the end this is meant to make it easier and if it does the opposite it's not worth it.

Have some lovely and relaxing-productive time away! An idea for mixing travel, learning, and gardening in a way that also doesn't put out a bat signal for weirdos at your house: organizations like Native Seeds/SEARCH and Seed Savers Exchange do workshops/intensives at their nurseries on various topics for home gardeners to learn about native and heirloom varieties as well as just gardening in general. Finding an organization you really like with a workshop you're interested in could be a sweet deal for learning how to maintain and expand the garden after the landscapers get you started.

There's a free gardening resource in every county, called the County Extension. Farmers use it. They test soil for nutrients, have master gardeners who give free advice. (I've been consulting with an entomologist from University of Arizona about harvester ants on my property. She loves our emails because I want to keep the ants.) They'll tell you what plants grow well in your area, when to plant and other growing info like diseases and cures. I cured my mulberry tree of black soot disease.
Hiring a landscaper to do the work is great, but doing it yourself is so much more satisfying. It's the difference between buying a garment off the rack and making it yourself. 💕🌞🌵😷

Before I go further--and I absolutely will*--THANK YOU for researching sponsors before signing on. Noticed and appreciated, even before you made it explicit, but thank you and also thanks for saying it out loud. Lead by example or something. :D
And now that I've seen more, yes, the fact that you do that (and so many other things) is a reason your ice cream is one of the best brands that I keep coming back to and is the most soothing and uplifting. It can be subtle and easily escape notice, but along with all the other thinnnnnngs, it feels like at least having this ice cream every week isn't contributing to stuff that is the reason I require ice cream breaks in the first place.
I... I may be stretching the metaphor a bit too far. REGARDLESS. I will continue to have ice cream while the shop is on hiatus by going back to some of my favorite flavors that are... that I've kept... that TH-cam has... ah, kept in the freezer for me? To go back and enjoy?
Uh. Haha. Damn, sorry. I broke your metaphor. Maybe if I just kinda set it here carefully on the couch and back away slowly it will get better on its own?
Good for you for taking a break(ish), too. Huzzah! Pleasant chicken dreams to you.
    *you were warned

    • @danielletdg8423

I plan on going back to retry the various flavors (past videos) myself.

I’m so glad that you are taking a break. I really enjoy your videos, your outlook and how you tackle sewing challenges. Selfishly I want you to be able to continue this for years! Which means you have to take care of yourself. You need a balance that lets you go out and have fun. I know you said a full day off might be hard so what about 2 half days a week? That might be easier. I know you can’t stop thinking but you should be able to find something fun to enjoy while thinking!
    Have a wonderful new year.
Oh and for the rest of the world I’ve taken a bit of a break from doom scrolling the news. It’s so much nicer to sit and watch one of your videos than worry about the state of Canadian politics! Or the world! I really thank you for that!

Sending you so, so much love. This stage of your life is incredibly difficult, but it might also be really beautiful. Enjoy the small moments, celebrate every opportunity you can, and remember most of all to be kind to yourself.
I lived alone for 20 years, I recently got married, so I'm in exactly the opposite stage - how on earth do I share everything with someone? But you will get to learn how strong and creative you can be, you will spend time examining your likes and dislikes, setting up new routines and habits - but I'd suggest building in time and space to grieve, mourn, and celebrate what you have lost.
I don't know you from Adam, but I am genuinely sending love all the way from New Zealand ❤
Also, I'm sure you've been inundated with unsolicited advice, and I do apologise if I've overstepped 😍

30 years ago (maybe even 10 years, I would have thought "content provider" was quite silly, and therefore not a "real" job. I was WRONG. 😂 You've provided lessons of things that I wasn't processing well when learning before. Some of these are becoming lost arts, and are crucial to more sustainable living. Your motivation to explore and learn is more than inspiring. Your sense of humor is entertaining. Your humble nature allows for balance. And ice cream is a long term investment for mental health. We really need to remember why we work so hard. Isn't it for "a better life"? So... ice cream... 🤗
By the way, I really like that dress pattern. 😂

I truly enjoy your videos and seeing the projects you’ve made.
Working a garden is a stress reliever as well as the healthy foods.
For bread, try a stand mixer that has a hook attachment that can essentially knead it for you. Or a bread maker machine.

When I saw the title of the video my first reaction was "oh my god oh no!" because of how much I rely on your videos for a sense of belonging. You are the only TH-camr I watch, after many years and channels, that I relate to, and is comfortable being who they are. I turn to your videos when I want creativity, off topic tangents, lots of side stories, many mistakes and humor over them, and just about everything else that you do.
In a way, you've become a friend to me, and I am literally only just realizing this as I am writing this comment.
I really appreciate all that you do for your community, and as "silly" as it might seem/feel/be implied by others, what you do is just as important as any other job (it just impacts other people and in other ways).
I hope you enjoy your break and get to do all the things you want to! and if you choose to share those with us, I will join every single journey!

Being a retired senior, an avid gardener and crafter, I’ve been tempted to start something on my channel, but I worry I’d not be able to commit to regular posts. Glad to see you looking after yourself, that's always the most important thing.
We turned to distractions and escapism, to entertainment, during the pandemic in order not to tear ourselves apart from everything. This is no different. You might not save lives, but you can be saving someone's sanity or just ability to cope with another day. That's never nothing.
I'm taking a break from writing for a while next year, after writing several books (unpublished, nothing there), but I'm planning on taking up ribbon embroidery, some more adventurous cooking (cooking for one has to be made into almost a quest to seem worth the bother), reducing my yarn stash and, gasp, actually picking up sewing. Inspired by you and this community here.

Thank you for making "ice cream" . I really needed that this November when I lost my pregnancy at 18 weeks. I'm doing relatively okay now, accepting the feelings when they come, but also not being sad all the time. Christmas was a little harder than most years though. Having a lovely dress to wear in the hospital when I was induced to deliver my deceased baby did help me a little. You inspired me last year to purchase the pattern and I have made a couple of versions of it, one being a wearable mock up turned pyjama with pockets. Having things like that support people maybe more than you know. Thank you for that. I will miss your videos in January, but will be there for them come February again. I love your second channel videos as well because they help me understand my A(u)DHD husband a little better. Your contribution to this world in your videos is valuable in its own way. What first drew me to your videos was that your body shape is very similar to mine and I had a hard time picking out what to wear/make. I stayed for your personality and your creativeness in a " I'll figure it out, even if it isn't exactly the same as the prescribed method" kind of way. I'm a little like that in my own crafting as well, which makes you very relatable.
Again, thank you. Please enjoy the calmer pace for January and we'll see you again in a month!

This ended up long - sorry - I just wanted to pop in & say, that as a 44yr old AuDHD woman, mum & carer, of 3 Neurospicy young men, a Emotions and Metaphysical Kinesiologist (Therapist), and Literally in the throws of opening a Youth and Carers Community & Outreach center in South Australia; I find you absolutely inspirational! I can relate to the majority of the things you talk about on both channels & I have gotten SO MUCH inspiration to do many more things, that I had either forgotten about, or convinced myself that they are either not important enough or I didn't have time to do them (or the time to do them, wasn't important enough to give to them), when the truth of it all is.... I DO... If i stopped doom scrolling in my down time, or my FORCED pauses, because I have burnt myself out... That I give myself that important time, to explore my old loves for sewing, reading & cooking (because I want to, not because I HAVE to - Ie this Xmas I made Gluten Free Sourdough Pfeffernusse, Gluten Free Sourdough Ginger honey Cookies & Gluten Free Sweet Potato, Chocolate, Cranberry & Pistachio Fudgy Brownies - for my parents in law & mother in laws family - which we get to enjoy the MANY left overs of... just because I was fascinated to see what using GF flour would do, within the realms of Sourdough, - especially as I hadn't mastered my sourdough - by hand- bread yet, but I seem to be able to pull of wins, in making sourdough English muffins, pancakes etc {probably because none of these need kneading etc}. I even sat down and pulled out one of my children's VERY OLD "make yourself a soft toy" sewing kits, (I brought about 8 years earlier, as a homeschooling activity, that we NEVER did {because I again had convinced myself that I couldn't remember how to sew, therefore, I can't teach my children how to.... }) started making said kit - got board with the basic-ness of it, and decided to turn the simple little fox toy, into a sensory weighted toy, that also has the ability to be a heated up toy, for keeping warm in winter - because "WHY NOT"! .... YUP... that took 3 x longer then it should have, all completely hand sewn... however, I would go back and watch a lot of your older videos as I was sewing, or your second channel videos... and they all inspired me to want to get back into sewing my own clothes AGAIN (I used to do this as a teen, as well as make stuffed toys, plus I made costumes. When I was pregnant with each of my children, I would make from scratch their bed linens or I quilted, embroidered, x-stitched or patchworked their special blankets or cot blankets - (but remember, I can't sew - facepalm). So, LONG STORY short...... THANK YOU for being an "ice-cream maker" - (cough BS cough) AN ABSOLUTE F'**G INSPIRATIONAL WOMAN - who has reminded me, that it is IMPORTANT to do these things for our brain & mental health. (you know... the things that I should already know, being a therapist, working predominantly in the energetics and positive mental health)
Enjoy your creativity & exploration of your "want to do" list - non video filming time off .... I look forward to seeing sneak peaks of these on insta if you put them up! (I am the follower - Mystical Enigma Kinesiology )
Thank you for everything you do!
I DESPERATLY want to get the pattern that you have based so much on, and wearing... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the hooded ones, and I really want to make the coat you made last, WITH a hood... but I WANT to make ALL the dresses ... like you have made - that you are wearing - LOVE LOVE LOVE... so fantastic!
So - THANK YOU ... thank you for your channel(s) existence, thank you for posting, thank you for being real, keeping it real & being YOU!
    I appreciate you!
oh and Hello from the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia!

Especially as in my cart still is M6800
Plus about 16 other patterns lol..
Again, thank you for the inspiration.. now to wait for the patterns, get the materials, not freak out & relearn how to do buttonholes, zippers etc.. oh damn it, I'll have to ACTUALLY start using my iron.. which means I need an ironing board 🤦🏽‍♀️

One suggestion I have seen other sewists do; is to break longer projects up into multiple videos and wrapping up into a reveal at the end. It also gives a bit more insight into the process.

But i did finally buy fabric and notions for a pattern I've been dying to make, so my January is making a dress and wearing it to my first wedding anniversary dinner on January 26th! After 6 years of watching sewists on TH-cam, I'm finally doing it!! Yay for new beginnings

I am an indie author, which means everything you said about working for yourself and treating it like a business speaks DEEPLY to me. I love that you're giving yourself time to do the projects you want to. I think that's an incredibly important part of not burning out. I can't wait to see what you share in 2025!

I just found you recently, I think via the collaboration video you did with Ash L G about turning the side split skirt into pants. I alway watch videos with captions on, and I've been meaning to say how much I enjoy the little tidbits in yours when the music is playing. I usually do my yearly assessment of my life around my birthday, but I've been doing a little reflecting for the new year this month. I'm also making lists of things I want to try in 2025 - crafting classes, recipes, coping mechanisms for my ADHD, etc. Have a nice break! (I'm off to binge your back-catalog)

Thanks Charlie. I work and get every weekend off, all bank holidays and annual leave allowance. For you to take, or need to justify taking time off, we'll that's nuts! Please take any time you feel you want or need. I enjoy watching you as time out from my life, so why shouldn't you do the same.? Have fun, take a breath. Do something - anything - just for you. See you in February all being well. ❤

So many cool things to do in the world and I love that you're going to explore more of them! Exciting times. It's a great idea to take some time to sort out how you want to manage the channel and the directions in which you're going to take it. We're here and I for one am using you for exactly what you said - moments of calm; creating pretty things, reveling in the repetition of needles creating or embellishing fabric is meditative and calming. I watch a gardening channel of a family in the San Diego area. He's creating an entire homestead and his chicken house looks like an English Tudor home. Next Level Gardening might be worth a look if you enjoy watching other folks do the thing you're considering. So enjoy your thoughtful planning time and we'll look for you in a few weeks or so.

Taking a break does seem like a good idea since it sounds like you are working more than full time plus being able to spend time with your partner is always good to do.
One of the things that I plan on doing (New Year's resolution?) will be to try to learn about embroidered temari balls. I think that it's something that I can do on my own, but if not I can always go back to the US and take a class while visiting my family in March. A deadline may be good, I have a lot of fragile what I think is 16/2 linen that I can use to make the balls themselves. Cleaning out the crafts is also a good thing! :D

I love that you are taking a short break to recenter, reevaluate, and readjust. Everyone should do something like this. However it looks for them. Taking a reassessment and being honest about what is working and what isn't is essential to maintaining, or starting, a balance in their lives. I look forward to seeing what's in store for you and the channels in 2025. Happy New Year. ❤❤

I won't leave my company (unless something unexpected happens) but I would definitely like more $$. I do want to get back to baking, a hobby I love, but had to push aside several years ago for life stuff.

Thank you for giving your time for us, and for your metaphorical ice cream. Ice cream is fun and comforting, and everyone needs time away from the stress of the outside world for our own good. I for one am incredibly grateful that those things do not often find their way into your videos, because that makes them a safe place to come when the world is overwhelming. Not all heroes wear capes (but you could, if you made one :p).
Enjoy your break, and hopefully have some ice cream of your own in January.

Great that you are taking time for yourself. I can't imagine not getting a proper break from work ever. In the UK we get mandated annual leave/vacation time and sick leave, which I don't think you get in the USA, and I would imagine even less so as a content creator.
Enjoy yourself and until you get back I will watch you earlier content. ❤

Regarding bread: I cannot overstate the benefits of having a stand mixer with a dough hook for kneading bread dough. It's a great kitchen tool in general if you love baking, but for bread in particular it pretty much erases the "kneading is hard because I get tired" problem completely. I know they're pricy (I was fortunate to have inherited my stand mixer), but if you don't already have one and you're in the position to pick one up, I promise you won't regret it.

I am glad you are taking a break, its a really healthy thing to take time to assess where we are and how we want to adjust. An annual break sounds like a great idea. I do appreciate that I don't know where you stand on politics, because it means that you are focusing on your craft(s) when you do videos and keeping separation between your work and personal (as much as a youtuber can). Our political system is so polarized right now that, even when i agree with someone's politics, unless I'm specifically watching a political video, I just don't want to hear about politics or anything related to them. So, thank you for keeping your videos about sewing, embroidering, baking, etc. That is why we love you.

Check to make sure you can garden in your front yard before you do it, I had heard that California has made that illegal, or limits what the size of the garden is.
