    This is how comparison videos should be done. Clear audio, quick edits to each model, great playing and some helpful opinions at the end. I loved watching this video, great work.

      Great points.
      Nothing worse than someone who plays for 5 minutes on each guitar and expects the viewer to keep it fresh in their heads when they switch instruments.

      This review by Peng is exactly how a comparison video should be done.
      I just wish there was a bit more strumming of open chords which is what many of us will be doing for at least half the time.
      Other than that minor complaint...outstanding video comparison.
      I just subscribed.

    That's the best rendition of moon River I ever heard. Just gorgeous! Oh, and my favorite of these guitars are the AC5r. Although with Yamahas, I prefer the LS36, or Ls56. They're just awesome for the price point as well.

    Thank you, Peng!
    For the third time I went and played over 50 guitars planning on buying the Martin that I would never part with, never want or need another guitar. I bought a Yamaha AC1R for $479.
    I would have spent up to $3,500 on a Martin. The AC1R was sooooooo gooooood, I didn't even want to wait to play an A3 or an 5A, even knowing how good Red Label Yamaha's are.
    Brave reviewers are doing blind comparisons with skilled friends and musicians between Recording King, Epiphone Master Builds, Alvarez, Yamaha's vs. Martins and doing extremely well with the so-called, not-so-any-longer lesser brand.
    Never before has there been so much exquisite mastercraft and musicality available, including at the lower price ranges. I'm happy for the Taylor and Martin marketing juggernauts, I'm happy for their successes, innovations, rabid fans and historical gravitas, but there are dozens and dozens of commercial and niche market luthiers producing absolutely amazing instruments. This golden age of acoustic guitars just keeps getting goldener and goldener.

      Thank for sharing your experiences with the acoustic guitars, I think acoustic guitars became more and more popular than electric guitars, people like to listen more Acoustic guitar music rather than listen heavy /busy rock music, since acoustic guitar music usually are quieter and more sweeter. As a teacher , I found students request much more acoustic guitar lessons than electric guitar lesson.

    Thank you! This is by far one of the most informative, thorough, objective and intelligently produced reviews I have ever seen! Your review technique of editing the guitars seamlessly allows one's ear to hear the immediate shift in sound and should stand as an exemplar for all other guitar reviews. Additionally, your discovery of the battery box being the source of such a strange and seemingly unusual defect is impressive. Furthermore, your suggested fix for the narrow nut is such a simple and elegant resolution that I will certainly benefit from. I have XXL hands and I have trouble finding nuts/string spacing that is ergonomic for me. I am both surprised that I've never heard of a solution such as yours and I'm also slightly embarrassed that I never thought of it. Again, I commend and thank you for such a sophisticated, valuable and informative review. Lastly, your original song and your arrangements are just beautiful. Please keep producing such valuable videos! P.S. If it's not already obvious, I'm a fan. Btw, so is my wife.

    Great playing sir! Yamaha makes exceptional musical instruments, I have a japanese LLX25c and it has nothing to fear when compared to the more celebrated brands. The AC5r is the one I prefer in this comparison and anyway the Series 5 made in Japan is a notch above 3 and 1 made in China that sound great too.

    Fantastic comparison. I have the AC1R and love it dearly. It has incredibly sweet overtones. Great for fingerpicking and strumming. Yamaha's artist line plays above its price tag. Great guitars for the money. I have also had great luck with Ibanez Artwood's and Alvarez Masterworks. While they don't get the attention of the big brands, it's amazing how far guitar production has improved at a reasonable price point.

    Thank you very much for the informative and entertaining video! I was initially considering the rosewood version, but once I heard the mahogany version, it seemed to stand out a little more. The rosewood's sound seems closer to a nylon string classical guitar, and thus warmer. I'm considering the AC5M for the slightly brighter sound, and hope no modifications will be necessary out of the box.

    • @DieselDiaz

      AC5R is arguably the most comfortable and best overall sounding one. However, I chose the A5R because I wanted a slightly bigger sound, with more bass--and got used to the slightly larger body.
      If you're a fan of how a Mahogany guitar sounds, though, you can't go wrong with the AC3M or AC5M.

    Awesome comparison! I bought an A3R a week ago, it's very good sounding acoustically, but there's significant amount of white noise when plugged in using the SRT2 pickup. Have you noticed anything like that? I'm debating whether to return it or exchange for a AC5R or A5R.

    • @pengchen634
      @pengchen634  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I always use the str2 preamp plus micing when I do recording for my video and guitar lesson online, never have any noise issues on the str2 line in channel. I just published a new video by using this way to do the audio recording and mixed at post.
      m.th-cam.com/video/IPG9IJe328U/w-d-xo.html&feature=share
      I would suggest changing a new battery, or another better cable, should be short cable not more than 10 ft, check the gain is not too big for the line in on the mixer input channel. If all this steps are not working for you, the preamp may be bad.

    It's nice to see the diference between the Mahogany and Rosewood back and sides when playing the same body model. To my ears, I liked the Mahogany on the Dreadnought and the Rosewood on the Grand Concert. I have an AC3M and I really think there is a little too much mid that is already a characteristic of this model but seems to be accentuated by the Mahogany and I really liked what I heard from your Rosewood model here. In the other hand, the lack of mid on the Dreadnought model was very well filled by the Mahogany on this model that made is very more nice for recordings. Nice, nice, nice.. learned a lot here! Awesome job on this. On my AC3M I also suffering with a strange noise that sounds like a fret buzz, but really don't seems to be the case, I will revisit the battery holder and preamp mounts. Just received my A5R. Looks and sounds beautiful. Thanks for your informative review. But I have a question. I checked the first fret string clearance a found it ranges from .018” on the high e to 0.027” on the A. I could easily file a bit out of the A string groove on the nut as I have the files and a dial indicator gauge for string height. Is the A string different enough from the others that you would do this if it were your guitar?

    • @pengchen634
      @pengchen634  ปีที่แล้ว

      I lowered all 6 strings on nut of my AC5R, but before I did it I check and adjusted the guitar neck, make it has slightly front bowed when it is standard tuning and let it stay for a few days, then I lowered the nut by using the right size tools. I didn’t measure them , I just make them feels right when I touch. The A5 models are closed to low action for what I need, just a little adjustment on nut and bridge.
      If you don’t have the right tools or enough experience, please bring it to professional repair man.
      I recently made a new bridge by using a piece of blank unbleached bone for my AC5R, surprised me, it improved the sound more solid and clear.

If I may ask, I want to know if there are any sound/tonal quality differences between AC3R and AC5R in case you had tried both guitars? Thank you very much!

    • @pengchen634
      @pengchen634  ปีที่แล้ว

      The AC5R has smaller body, easier for me to hold, it produces less bass then A5R , more balance sound for recording, which make it easier for post audio mixing, I don’t have EQ a lots to kill low frequencies.
      A5R is louder, more bass, very nice sounding too, if keep a little far away to the mic, or keep trying different mic positions, you may get a balance sounding on recording,
      which doesn’t need too much EQ on post to keep its sound more natural.

    Excellent and informative video. I am thinking about buying a Taylor 414ce-R. It costs $2,599. I liked the AC3 that I played a lot but it was slightly mid heavy w/laminated sides. The new Taylors have a new V bracing that really hurts their base response. The older (pre-2018) have the X brace which is too base heavy. I hesitate to buy a used 4+ year old guitar for ~$1,500-$2,000.
    Do you think the AC5R-R is a good compromise? Your Taylor 815CE and playing of "Yesterday" sounded great. Did that one have the V or X bracing- would you pick it over the AC5R?

    • @pengchen634
      @pengchen634  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AC5R is the model I keep, it does not have a big volume output as A5R, but it’s bass and treble is more balanced for recording, the A5 guitars have more bass and volume than the Ac5R, if you adjust the mic position and do some post works, it sounds very full. My Taylor 815 is a older model made in year 2000, I am not sure it’s bracing, it’s bass and treble are in good balance, it has a little wide nut, easier for finger style. Both yamaha and Taylor are good ones when micing their acoustic sound, when plug in amp or sound card, I think the yamaha do better job.

    The guitars with R's sound sweeter, less boomy, more balanced but the M's are louder and woodsy sounding.

      I like the R’s (rosewood back and side), sounds better to me when do a solo piece, the M’s body (Mahogany back and side) sound brighter, is also very nice, sounds good when mixed with other instruments . Thanks for leveling your comment!

      I own a new martin om28.. pretty awesome already but waiting for it to age..I've played different higher end Yamaha guitars in the past and they always deliver in quality and sound right out of box. Not sure how they age though??

      @@oliver7763 aged acoustic guitar usually sounds better than the new ones, not sure these Yamaha models, they should last long time , sound should improve after years playing. Thanks for leaving your comment!

    I had the same problem with the battery compartment on my Yamaha Fgx800c. I have the A5R on order. Thanks for the video!

    Excellent work! Debating to purchase between AC1M (solid top) or AC3M (all solid). Any comments/advice?

      It's a matter of preference. But, the '3' models are nicer, since they have aesthetical features that make them look better and play a bit better (rolled edges on the neck).. Some people do prefer the sound of the laminate wood with a Spruce top, though. If you look at them closely, side by side, the AC3M clearly looks better and more well made. They paid more attention to detail on it. However, when you play it, it becomes more a question of which sounds better to your ears--and is the extra couple of hundred dollars worth it.
      I had to make a similar decision between the AC3R and the A5R. They are very similar and each has their slight pros and cons. Love this guitar series as a whole, though!

      AC3M was thermo treated so it should sound nicer but maybe AC1M will catch up over time.

      lanx0003 yes, the ac3 models has better sound vs ac1 models, but fingerboards are different, you should try them, see which one you like, thanks for watching!

      @@pengchen634 I will try it. Thx. I do have a question regarding the action on ac3. I purchased a1m just two weeks ago. The action is a bit high (3mm low side and 2.75mm high side on 12th fret) but neck is straight so I only lower the saddle. There is no need to adjust the nut because the action on the 1st and 2nd fret seem fine. Right now, the actions are 2mm low and 1.75mm high and the playability is much improved. You have mentioned the ac3's action is high too. Could you tell me how was the factory settings for ac3 in terms of action high? You seem not concerned on the ac1 action.
