Avoiding aircraft - SAFESKY - The flying app for Electronic Conspicuity

  • The passion behind the development of this application is beyond words. Tristan Fily is the CEO of company SAFESKY who have designed a very user friendly application to allow all fliers to see other Electronic Conspicuity (EC) users. It takes existing technology, uses some very clever programming to create a flying community application to keep you safe in the sky.
    The SAFESKY Team are not trying to replace other applications such as FOREFLIGHT or SKYDEMON, in fact they are working with them to help all fliers.
    How does it work
    The phone or tablet does not pick up the surrounding traffic, it is not a radar!
    SafeSky is a mobile application that provides traffic information wherever you are. Thanks to the GPS chip in your mobile device, the SafeSky application sends your position to our servers, which is then transmitted in the same way, but in the opposite direction, to other users of the application. This way, you can share your location with the SafeSky community at any time.

    Thanks Giles for sharing this. It was interesting to hear the technicalities of how it works and the result of low latency. I am already a user of SafeSky, I have it running next to my oudie in my paramotor flight deck, works well. The only thing I am disappointed with is the audio alerts, I wonder if the audio gain is too low in SafeSky as I can never hear the alerts in my micro-avionics headset even when my phone and headset volume is full volume. The audio aside the screen does catch my eye when it starts flashing black and white on the radar to grab my attention which is great.

    Great to hear these innovators are collaborating to share information. The use of UDP over mobile network has convinced me safe sky bring something complementary to earn an install. With multiple potential sources for the same traffic, the privacy slant means lack of unique identifier could lead to duplicates? I'll need to test, but also presume SkyDemon currently can't process two concurrent GDL90 sources. I'd also be interested to know if they're exploring air-to-air but I presume power and lack of spare radio (assuming WiFi taken with local network to SkyEcho etc) make it unfeasible.

      Hi Daniel, I'm no expert on any of these systems. I know that Safesky are looking to have 2 inputs in a later update, currently I keep getting pinged by my FLARM as my SE2 is linked, so it thinks I'm going to hit the FLARM aircraft, me. There is no perfect system but something is better than nothing. Have you tried contacting Skydemon or Safesky directly about your query?

      I'm just getting up to speed on electronic conspicuity (thanks for all your great interviews on the topic) and trying to work out best route to take. Apologies, some of those questions were just me thinking out loud whilst watching the video :) I've already reached out to uavionix to see if SkyEcho can act as a WiFi client rather than a hotspot, then in theory could link tablet and conspicuity device to phone and still have internet uplink (which would help combine with SkySafe). I'm also going to reach out to SkyDemon to see if my ideas on how to combine multiple sources can increase coverage of the fragmented market. PilotAware looks great, but packaging of the device isn't great and I'd prefer to have direct receipt of flarm.

  • @halfrhovsquared
    @halfrhovsquared 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do like his implementation of the “radar view”, although PAW’s implementation is possibly a little easier to read as it is based on colour and shape. I don’t have to look at two different parts of a screen to determine if the aircraft is above, below, or at the same altitude. I simply glance at the “radar” and it gives me all of the information I need. However… When workload is high, I find myself wondering “is a circle or a diamond above, or below?”. However, all I really need to remember is that I can pretty much ignore it unless it is red. Again, although his implementation is nice, he’s re-inventing the wheel.

    • @GolfFoxtrot22
      @GolfFoxtrot22  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @halfrhovsquared
      @halfrhovsquared 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GolfFoxtrot22 - Being free doesn’t mean that it has a place. Let me see if I can form an analogy.
      I create a free cellphone. However, it won’t call and cannot be called by any other phone out there UNLESS the other service providers decide to link up with my infrastructure…. and I make it so that it has caller-ID, but only displays the numbers of those people who are my friends and it will only work when both the originating and receiving phones are in line-of-sight of a street-lamp.
      Free comms is great, right?
      How is it a benefit to create yet another system that is going to draw people away from the standard system(s) giving them the false sense of security that they can see others and others can see them? All these different systems don’t see each other. If I want to implement that system on top of the ones I already have in order to be able to see people who have adopted it instead of one of the existing standards, it’s not going to be free. Not by a long shot. I will need to purchase and mount yet another device to my panel.

    • @GolfFoxtrot22
      @GolfFoxtrot22  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But the issue in the UK atm is there isn't a standard system. It's a miss match of Mode S and C, TCAS, And then FLARM, PAW and Skyecho etc. Please don't think I'm being difficult, just trying to show what is out there. Until the CAA give direction on what is needed, it will remain a very unrefined process.

    • @halfrhovsquared
      @halfrhovsquared 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GolfFoxtrot22 - I agree with you wholeheartedly that there are already numerous disparate systems out there. That is why creating yet another system is not the answer.
      CAP1391 does define a standard and that’s ADS-B. A Mode S transponder and SkyEcho adhere (at least fairly closely to be workable) to that standard. PilotAware sees ADS-B as does TCAS. The fact that nothing sees PAW other than PAW is a huge drawback for that system, as far as I am concerned but they had a massive head-start and achieved a degree of market penetration which which means that if you choose only one system, PAW is probably one to consider (if seeing others is your priority). If being seen is your priority, then SkyEcho or a Mode S transponder would be the main choices. If you want to be see and be seen by the most traffic, then either PAW feeding a Mode S transponder or PAW plus SkyEcho is the way to go…. and even then, the adoption of other systems means that there will still be “equipped” traffic that is invisible or cannot see you. This system just makes that problem worse. It’s not adding value to the field of electronic conspicuity at this stage. It is muddying the water by creating another system that will neither see me nor be seen by me despite my aircraft already being equipped with PAW, SkyEcho II, and a transponder.
      I do get that an attempt to create a system which is “free” is essentially a good idea and if there weren’t already so many other systems out there which don’t see each other, I’d be behind this guy all the way and a lot of his design-philosophy is sound. It’s just that he’s so late to the party, that he’s making an already bad problem, worse.

    He says that ADS-B is great for the air-traffic-controller but not for other pilots.
    No. ATC generally don’t see ADS-B. I think there is only one in the UK which actually sees ADS-B and (if I recall correctly), that’s Inverness (or, perhaps Aberdeen).
    PilotAware sees all ADS-B, as does SkyEcho, as does TCAS, so GA pilots (and airliners) are more likely to see ADS-B than ATC. So, great for “traffic-aware” fellow pilots, not so good for ATC.
    When he starts his “presentation” with a blatant falsehood, I have to regard the rest of his talk with serious scepticism.
    I’ll watch the rest (and possibly make comment as he continues) but my first thought was “We don’t need ANOTHER non-standard protocol. It’s bad enough that we have FLARM, ADS-B, and PilotAware - We don’t need yet another one trying to re-invent the wheel”.
    ADS-B is the “standard” (although a glider-pilot might argue the same for FLARM). Right now, my immediate reaction is that this is a vanity-project and that it needs to die… QUICKLY. Let’s see if the interview changes my mind.
