Michael, I like it when you do small pieces to see how you simplify. I am really liking the toned down colours in both pieces. It really shows the composition working hard. I think the second painting is one of my favourites of yours. There is a mystery to it. Something about the promontory leading off into the distance.

That last one turned out really nice! not overworked, super fresh.
Also, the thicker, more opaque dark foreground does play well against the more translucent, lighter values of the rocks in the middle ground. Compositionally solid too, with the wave breaking on the upper right to offset the mass of the rocks in the lower left. Simple and effective. Awesome painting Michael! : )

Interesting to see you rehearsing your stroke 5 or 6 times before putting down the paint, I guess it gives the brain time to think before putting down your best guess. Also like how you melt the horizon into the sky without clear division between ocean and sky, waves and clouds. Your painting is so inspiring, thanks for sharing so often, cheers 🌊
I think the motion in the brush is to keep the feel of energy and urgency. I'm not really rehearsing the stroke as much as keeping energy in the brush while I'm deciding what to do. Glad you found this inspiring!

Sometimes the simplest paintings are the most interesting..
To me that's always the indicator of a good painting, or someone who knows what they are doing, they can take a very simple subject - something you might by pass in real life, but still make it compelling enough to draw you into it.
Yes, it think a simple design pulls the viewer in and allows the eye to wander and look at the brushwork, color and surface quality, etc. Keep it simple!

Michael....Love your video's and honesty of the artistic process shared!!. I've been oil painting for 10+ years (from photographs etc), but never had the balls to go try en plein air (self counsiousness?). I will now after watching your video's... In addition, I love dioxazine purlple for dark tones with burnt sienna...but also use tiny amounts of phtalo blue in the mix to really darken/blacken it if required, whilst still maintaining transparancy/luminosity. Looking forward to more footage...Do you use the genuine viridian (PG18) or a phtalo hue on your pallete?

Thanks Edith! For the water, I usually start with ultramarine, white, and a touch of burnt sienna.
I'm amazed at how you can get the amount of detail that you do with the large brush considering the small panel...

Great paintings Mike, and I love the longer video. I think both paintings are really effective. ..definitely showing the contrast dark/light. I've rarely used dioxazine purple, but I've had a tube for about 20 years lol. Guess it will last another 20. I remember using it in a painting of irises many years ago. A beautiful transparent purple. I might just squeeze a blob on to my palette.😂

Yes, it's a useful color! It's nice to have a clean, saturated purple and it's perfect for greying down yellows.

I used both. I started with the natural and finished with the synthetic.

The Beaufort is the cheapest version I've seen. Mine is from takeiteasel.com
