My Datejust 36 is a year old as well. Silver dial with batons, fluted white gold bezel with the Jubilee bracelet. It is, in my mind, the quintessential Rolex. Was initally disappointed that the hidden clasp was discontinued but find the EasyLink makes for a much more adjustable and wearable experience. Some would call it the ultimate Old Person's watch but I like to think of it as a watch you can age into.
I got the exact same configuration in 28mm for my fiancé a couple of years back. Still pondering to pick up the same in 36mm for myself. Definitely an all time classic.
Great review Jenni. I too would go the 36mm Datejust. Only 4 things stand in my way. 1/ No Money 2/ No Money 3/ No Money 4/ No Money But it is my favorite Rolex. First fell in love with it when I saw Al Pacino's character Ricky Roma wearing a two tone in the film Glengarry Glen Ross. Cheers from Australia, Rikki.
Besides the great watch content, your production values are sky-high. Perfect lighting, great color balance, and beautifully focused close-ups. I really enjoy watching.
Completely agree on your take about it being more flashy than first expected and I think that expectation comes from seeing vintage DJs on people and those tend to give off a more casual vibe. I think the more we wear our brand new DJs, the more toned down they will become. Great video as always Jenni!
I bought my first Rolex, a 1987 Datejust 16013 two tone w the champagne dial 36mm jubilee. So beautiful. Its also the quickset model. Its very precise and easy to wear and keeps time perfectly. I love it and I know it will last a long long time. 🥰 i really think its the epitome of Rolexes as far as vintage models are concerned
I inherited a two tone 1601 Datejust from 1961 from my uncle. So far I have worn it on and off for about 8 months. Changed the two tone Oyster bracelet for a brown leather strap and I feel it pops up. I alternate it with my Omega Seamaster Sub and of course with a Apple Watch. I tend to save the Rolex for special occasions. My uncle passed away and the Rolex AD does not have a record of the watch being serviced in Costa Rica, yet it does not miss a beat. 59 years and ticking.
Jenni love your videos. I am in my early 60s and I am breaking all of the 21st century rules. I bought a used Oyster date on Chrono24 under $2500 US dollars for a 34 mm watch and I have a 20.3 cm wrist. I remember 50 years ago everyone wore watches of this size , the 36 mm was the large size.
Nice video! I am 27 and I am wearing my Datejust for 6-7 years now. I started with a lady Datejust 26mm with the jubilee. After a few years I out grown her. For my bachelor I bought a 1991 36mm Datejust with the oyster bracelet and the pyramid dial. I came to the conclusion that the oyster bracelet suits me way better and is more durable. The gold on the oyster bracelet is less busy, but she is here for it 💁🏼♀️. Fun fact, my 26 and 36 both have the pyramid dial (ivory colour) I think it is the most beautiful one Rolex ever made. Love to see a other women is in to watches as me. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Mine is a DJ31, white Rolesor with Jubilee bracelet and hidden clasp, pink dial, fluted bezel, and baton indices :) . Love it. I didn’t know the hidden clasp was discontinued! I bought mine last year. I haven’t hardly had it off my wrist! It’s the one that does it all.
Thanks for sharing your experience 😉 I decided to buy a pre-owned Datejust and have it serviced by Rolex. The cost of the service was around 700eur but I’m very happy with the result. The watch looks brand new and works perfectly (+3sec/day). Also you get a 2 year warranty on the service which is not bad. 🙂
My first Datejust was a 41mm blue dial with diamond markers, fluted bezel on jubilee. I completely agree with you, it’s way too flashy to wear casually or in the office. Any bit of light will catch the bezel, which is really shiny even in low light settings, or the polished middle links of the jubilee. I reserved to only wear it to formal settings or around the house, next time around I’ll get the rhodium dial with batons, and skip the jubilee but keep the fluted bezel. I think this would have a more versatile mix of flash but also can be worn in more settings
22 years I’ve had my Datejust, wore it 24/7 for 15 years and apart from one tiny chip on the edge of the crystal and a very slight bit of stretch to the bracelet it’s still good as new...
Three or four years ago I bought an 116234 Datejust as my first modern Rolex new from an AD. After wearing it for a couple of days...I noticed what appeared to be an eyelash poking out from the date wheel. I was so surprised because I heard Rolex Factory quality control was legendary! The AD made it right though and sent it in to the RSC for immediate repair. Never experienced a QC issues from a new Rolex from any AD since.
I gave my wife four years ago a timepiece very similar to yours: 36mm, fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet, diamond markers, concealed clasp. Only difference is hers is pink gold and steel. Stunning watch, we love the concealed clasp, so much beautiful and sophisticated than the newer Oyster clasp. Thanks for your great video on the subject!!
Agreed. Save the larger sizes for the chronos, dive bezels, world timers, etc. The simpler, the smaller, the better for the Oyster Precision and Datejust.
I own this one in white gold fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet with luminous hour marker. I’m loving it. I use a watch winder to keep it moving. I don’t need to adjust the time each time I wear my Rolex watch. 💚💚💚💚
Personally speaking I would always opt for the 36mm version, it just seems to hit the sweet spot regarding fit, form and function. My own 36mm Datejust was purchased new from Goldsmiths jewellers (Nottingham) in 1992 and has a grey tapestry dial with baton hour markers and a jubilee bracelet. I did have an issue with the watch when it was approximately 6 months old. When I came to wind up the watch the winding crown suddenly jammed and would not move. I took it back to my AD who then returned it to Rolex for repair. To be fair to Rolex the watch has run absolutely perfectly ever since. Currently, I am on the lookout for a Datejust model 16233 with gold tapestry dial to purchase which will nicely compliment my existing watch.
Those 80s tapestry dials are a gorgeous thing, full of that demential American Psycho vibe, but well in line into the classic realm of a gentleman's watch.
The 36mm DateJust look absolutely stunning on your wrist “ Bought the same sliver diamond dial with jubilee brackets model in 26mm for my daughter “ Glad to see my grown up lady loving her first mechanical timepiece “ Thanks for the great content “ Cheers 🥂
Hi Jenni, I have purchased a 36mm datejust as my first Rolex. The best part is I have a small wrist size and it looked better on than a 41mm datejust. Also it will be nice to hand it down to my daughter one day. Cheers David
I have requested a Datejust 41 with a fluted bezel and a jubilee from my AD. I want both a silver dial and the Rhodium dial. That's a beautiful watch, especially yours with the diamonds. The downside of your clasp is that you are limited to removing or adding a link to adjust for changes in your wrist size...
Really? Seems heavy and uncomfortable. I am searching for the lightest most comfortable luxury watch. Not sure if that would be 28mm Rolex but it would probably be the 22mm Cartier panthere. 🤔 I guess I need to research the weight of the watches.
@@MGyoutube307 the rolex Datejust is actually light & very comfortable on the wrist with the jubilee bracelet. I think the perfect Rolex datejust is the 16234 ss w/18k wg fluted bezel or 16233 ss w/18k yg because of the quick set & it comes with the sapphire crystal & its water resistant , either one is good!
Just acquired a vintage 1601 Datejust and have been blown away at just how versatile it is. The DJ is seeing more wrist time than my Submariner or my Daytona, which in retrospect has surprised me. The watch can be worn with a suit and tie or with flip flops and looks equally at home. Switching straps changes the feel of the DJ and takes only a few seconds. Nothing makes the watch look bad at all.
I'm really happy to see more women reviewing watches. Reading specs, it's difficult to understand how a watch will wear unless you see it on the wrist. Even though I'm a man I vastly prefer smaller watches or vintage sizing and these reviews are a great point of reference for me.
I own both sizes, Day Date in 36 mm and Datejust in 41 mm. I ware Day Date daily and my newborn son’s Datejust whenever I travel, or during the events that will be remembered. The biggest advantage of 41mm is watch will also look good on the rubber bands. Where 36 mm would look a bit small. So if you are not planning to change bracelet, get 36 mm. If you are like me, who wants to experiment with different rubber bands, get 41 mm. Whatever you are going to get, enjoy and wear it in good health. Merry Christmas everyone ❤️
I was very lucky and able to buy one of the exact 41mm datejust I wanted justthis last Saturdaynight. White gold fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet, white dial with white gold Roman's. I didn't know my AD had it for me. I actually went after a long week, but productive week to treat myself to a fun Baume and Mercier Riviera. When I got their my AD had a funny smile told me they had one of the watches I really wanted. Needless to say I was behond excited. Still am. I feel like i have basically been high ever since. Lol. I can't believe how beautiful it is. I love my Submariner, but there is something about the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet that is just next level to my eyes. I really like your diamond set silver dial, and hidden clasp. Thank you for the great videos.
Things happen particularly when hand made since people are human however the real measure is the integrity of the company that stands behind their product and honors their word.
I just picked up my grail Datejust-I went with 16200 from 2004 since the case and lugs got thicker in 2005. Split the difference between new and vintage and I’m loving it!
I have a 1970 Datejust with a silver Wideboy dial and hands and a white gold fluted bezel. Runs beautifully and maintains a near original condition. Only shame is that I don't have the original bracelet, although my 3rd party one is honestly higher quality than what was being produced back then. Can't think of a better everyday watch (other than maybe a Sub for someone more casual in their sartorial choices). If you're on the fence go try on a 36mm and I can promise you'll love it!
My wife loves her bi metal datejust but you are right the flute bezel and the jubilee bracelet do make it look very blingy..and that’s why she wears her olive dial oyster perpetual as an everyday watch
Lovely review Jenni👍🏼 I went the vintage path & bought a Rolex Speedking circa 1940. It’s only 30mm but absolutely stunning! It keeps perfect time & I wear it seldom. And so like you said, it’s a treat!😍 I will eventually buy a datejust, but again it will be vintage. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
I have many, many nice watches including an Explorer II and GMT ceramic. Most are larger in size. Bar none- the most comments I ever receive for any of my watches are for my 36mm DJ on a jubilee.
I'm here because I'm waiting for my AD calling me to collect my 2020 DJ 41 with black dial and Jubilé, spending the time watching Datjust videos. I've had a Breitling Navitimer, a Milgauss GV, a S/S Daytona WD, and a 116618LB. I sold the Milgauss and the Daytona after I broke up with my girlfriend (stupid idea, just look at the used Daytona price tags!!). I liked the 116618, but never loved it. In May I bought a PP Calatrava, which cost me a lot of nerves and caused lots of trouble, because of quality issues. I think, the DJ was a great choice and I'm more ready than ever for this timeless watch. I really like the way you review the watches. Very interesting points of view and easy to listen to.
I had the same problem with the date changing at around 3AM instead of around midnight with my daydate 36mm. I know the date changing mechanism doesn’t happen suddently because it is controlled by very slow moving gears but it was still a bit annoying...
I own the same version but with stick indices. This is my grail watch. It is very true that the jubilee does hide scratches very well. Some people might be worried about wear such a watch all the time because of it looking flashy (yours more than mine because of the diamonds) but I think it just works with anything. The DJ is one of those watches you can accessorize with anything because it is a status item.
I just found this video and it made me feel so much better. I just got a deep sea and the date changes at 930pm. I thought I was crazy or maybe it was how it was supposed to be….
Funny that you mention visibility of the Dial, I just bought a new Seamaster 300M with sandwiched dial, as big as 41mm, I could not tell the time at movie, a good catch there!!!
Tried my very first Rolex on only 3 weeks ago Jenni it was a 36mm Datejust. It looked so small though even on my tiny wrists? It had a white face and was on a Jubilee bracelet as well. At £6150 I nearly pulled the trigger but glad I didn't in the end as it would of just been a 100% impulse purchase. So I ended up walking out with a Tudor Black Bay 58 in all black and rose gold instead. Never looked back since either. Great video. Keep up the good work and stay safe!
I have the 116200 in the version shown in the video, oyster bracelet, domed bezel, silver sunburst dial, stick hour markers, in 36mm. It is a bit small for my wrist but adorable in quality and charm and definitely flies under the radar, ultimate luxury to wear a several thousand dollar watch that looks like a 100 dollar Seiko 5.
My 1966 OP Date (ref 1500, cal 1575, 34 mm) is perfect. And when I bought it in 1980 it was in marginal condition. I was lucky, I found the right guys to maintain it over the past 40 years, and it’s been the best experience. And btw, 1.2” seconds per day, a don’t have to wind it ever, and I can go for months without even setting it. The worst thing I ever did was I had sent to Rolex, once. (It was 50 years old and thought it was a good idea.) And never again. What a mistake that was. Sourcing service (every 8-10 years) is key to a good experience.
I think every watch breaks sometime somehow - like everything else. I hope you don’t like yours less because of that. I think that your Rolex is fantastic!
It's like so in clutch , I'm about to buy my first Rolex and I decided its gonna be a datejust , and honestly I was having a hard time trying to decide between dial colors or bracelet choice . Thanks Jenni
If I had to pick one watch in the entire world to own, it would be a 36mm Datejust. I know thats probably been said to death but there is a certain charm it has. The oyster case means having a 36mm on a 6.7" wrist is absolute perfection. The lugs would sit perfectly.
Just bought the Wimbledon 41mm Date just. It took me 35 mins to submit the wire transfer. $10.250 + tax =‘$11,096 out the door. Yeah! I’ve been saving but the wow factor was the price. Even though I saved for it; spending that kind of money was a real shocker. I will add that I had to graduate to get this watch from my AD. Buying a Tudor GMT followed by this Date Just just to qualify for the watch I really want; a submariner. It’s just the process; not a cheap one to get a relationship with my AD. Happy 2021 beautiful people!
I own the 41 and it wears very small for its dimensions , in reality it wears like a 38 or 39mm which I think is perfect for me . It’s a timeless classic .
My wife received a 2-tone DJ from her grandfather as our wedding gift 10 years ago. It's similarly configured as yours, and she loves it like it's one of our kids. I was looking for a vintage DJ, but the prices are ridiculous. Usually within 1k USD to a new 34mm OP for one in good condition. I realize the comparison is apples to oranges, but I just don't understand the vintage DJ market
you can find vintage datejusts for less than half of what you will pay for a new datejust so I don't understand your issue, OP is not directly comparable as the Rolex date complication is higher quality and more expensive than with a lot of other brands, that is not an arbitrary measure, you can run them forwards or backwards at any time without damaging the movement and they change instantly at midnight... you don't get something nice for nothing! Don't buy Rolex if you want a cheap watch!
I got my wife a date just for her birthday a couple of days ago. I'm a big watch fan and the most expensive one I have is my Garmin Forerunner 935. She was actually wearing her Timex (can't remember the model name, but it was square with a black face and silver accents) when we bought her the watch. We didn't actually expect to get it; it just kinda happened lol. I couldn't believe the difference in the feel.
The hands on my sub didn’t line up from new, so the hour hand lined to the marker at 5 minutes to the hour and had to be fixed. Never had anything so major on my other watches.
Thanks for your review- the most helpful I’ve seen. I tried on the 28 and 31 yesterday, I’m thinking of the silver dial (which is really a champagne colour) with fluted bezel but wasn’t sure on Roman numerals or sticks, still not sure so I need to try on some more I think soon
Jenni, I love all your videos and advice on watches. Keep it up. I can respect many views of fan boys/girls of Rolex. As for me I just NOT A FAN of the "modern ROLEX company"! It is a personal thing. I do not like how they manipulate us with one of the biggest marketing budget of any "luxury" brands, artificially limiting production and how it is structured for tax avoidance. ;-)
I fully agree, the 36mm is the perfect size in most of the cases (except for someone with a really huge wrist). I had a 41mm with white dial for 5 years and I recently exchanged it for a 36mm with a silver dial.
Nothing is perfect but Rolex comes pretty close. I love my 36mm 2-Tone Datejust purchased in 1985. I have 2 other Rolex watches but with its history and iconic look, Datejust to me is the quintessential Rolex.
During assembly it is normal to turn the crown to just as the date turns over. Then the hands are installed at midnight. This is when the date changes. It is a normal fix to make the watch as accurate as possible.
If I got a DateJust it would have to be vintage. There are so many unique versions out there and I'm drawn to the gold dial. It wouldn't be a daily, like yours it would be a special treat
Your first review I have watched, very cool and I have subscribed. My platinum DD is very similar never thought I would have a watch with diamonds, but I love it, and in certain light or low light it is just stunning. My wife is hooked on Daytonas.
Jenni... I've never heard you mention it, but if you don't already do any watchmaking you might start? It's so fun... and so satisfying to do it yourself. And quicker too, you could have reset those hands on your Rolex in less than thirty minutes. Cheers and thanks as always.
As much as I respect ingenuity, for her wedding watch, I think we would all agree not to experiment taking soft 18k gold hands off a Rolex that's under warranty.
Wonderfully concise and helps on what to focus on before buying this or other rolex or any other watch. I would definitely blame your AD from where this watch was purchased for also not noticing the defect. Before the watch is handed over any AD would set the time and date of the watch so there is no way I would let this AD of the hook. Will see your links. Hopefully will give some information on the movement that powers the watch. Stay well and safe and ofcourse enjoy your diamond date just. Its worth the love and adoration.
1601 Datejusts are a crazy deal for the buck. The 1570 caliber is a tough and fine machine, mine dates from 1969 and the thing keeps time well into the +/-3 seconds a day. And the case from back then has the drilled lugs, so you can easily change to a leather strap and the whole look of the watch with it.
Every single one of my rolex watches that I bought brand new from AD has gone into Rolex warranty service due to some issues, timekeeping issue to clasp issue etc....
shaw I must admit that my first Rolex, a GMT bought new in 1980, was originally an awful timekeeper. A trip to the dealer and an adjustment fixed it. All of my others (10 of them) have been fine.
My DJ is as old as me (1971) and still performs flawlessly. It reminds me that something nearly 50 years old can still kick ass.
I have my Dad’s Datejust from the 70’s - still terrific!
Dad’s watches are the best watches in the world. Not because of the brand. Because it was your dad’s ❤️❤️

1601s are the ultimate Datejusts. The modern version is a decent homage, but a homage at best.
I also love the hidden clasp on your bracelet!
That would be my first choice.

Got the dj36 as my fourth rolex in the collection one month ago. And still loving it.
GREAT REVIEW!
The Datejust is classic Rolex. In a perfect world i would have one fluted/jubilee for dress and one smooth/oyster for more casual attire.
I enjoy your content. Your explanation of GMT, by far, The Best.
Lovely review. Sadly I am not in the market for Rolex so have settled for a Pagani PD 1645 which is on it's way to me. God Bless.
I am extremely happy with mine, and become happier after this video.😊
First time first viewer! Wow, what an amazing experience !
I have many, many nice watches including an Explorer II and GMT ceramic. Most are larger in size.
Bar none- the most comments I ever receive for any of my watches are for my 36mm DJ on a jubilee.
I had an OP 36 and Rolex fixed everything under warranty. No problem and works perfectly.
Happy anniversary! Love the hidden clasp.
Jenni - great content. Great presenting. Congratulations on your wedding (though it seems late) and the datejust. Enjoy in good health.
I enjoyed watching this. Thanks for the tips and tricks on the Datejust. You're right in that a 36mm would be a great place to start.
Really like your logical approach to explaining the variables.. Thanks
The best thing about vintage datejusts are all the dial configurations. My grail is a yellow gold lapis dj
Great video Jenni. Just one small typo on wrist size at 8:56 170mm | 5.9 inch is not right 170mm | 6.69inch is correct.
Extremely useful and practical tips.. loved it!
The very first DJ was 36 mm . Almost smooth bezel, and jubilee. That is the Way to go.
I had this exact same watch which got burgled out of my house, I still miss it after 7 years 😭
Great conversation! I love the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet are the best options.
Great review!! Subscribed! I also bought this watch 36mm black fluted bezel on a jubilee. Love it!!
You are one of my favorite youtubers. Another great video.
Except a G-Shock 😉
Excellent catch up Jenni.
I own the 41 and it wears very small for its dimensions , in reality it wears like a 38 or 39mm which I think is perfect for me . It’s a timeless classic .
Hi I'm Jenni! Always gets ya ready for a great video👍
Great work J!!!! And btw Bond says you only live twice lol
Great video, Jenni! Which Seiko do you use as your everyday?
I love all your videos, but I would really like you to do more affordable choices that look luxurious like the Rolex brand.
Hi dear , would you guide me how you exchange I bought one in 28mm I got interested to 31mm but I don’t know how i can sell or exchange
Another informative video Jenni. Thanks! 🙂
Great video...You did a great report....
Loved it
Nothing is perfect but Rolex comes pretty close. I love my 36mm 2-Tone Datejust purchased in 1985. I have 2 other Rolex watches but with its history and iconic look, Datejust to me is the quintessential Rolex.
Good things to consider and didn’t realize the date changed at 12. Always saw less expensive watches tend to change date from 12-3am.
During assembly it is normal to turn the crown to just as the date turns over. Then the hands are installed at midnight. This is when the date changes. It is a normal fix to make the watch as accurate as possible.
Another great informative video. Also, best outro music in the watchosphere. I think you have the talking hands beat by a nose on that.
Every single one of my rolex watches that I bought brand new from AD has gone into
Rolex warranty service due to some issues, timekeeping issue to clasp issue etc....
shaw
I must admit that my first Rolex, a GMT bought new in 1980, was originally an awful timekeeper. A trip to the dealer and an adjustment fixed it.
All of my others (10 of them) have been fine.
