Indeed- I used to find history interesting, but sometimes rather dry; but now having a physical piece of that history in my hands brings it to life so much more! And coins inspire me to learn more- it's wonderful 😁
A guy talking about museum pieces and telling us about an auction... Wait, this ain't Forgotten Weapons! On a serious note though, it was a really nice and informative, as always :)
Spectacular coins. I collect ancient and medieval gold - one coin per century. I hope to go to the January 2024 show in NYC and perhaps fill some holes in that collection.
These coins are absolutely beautiful and are well preserved pieces of ancient art! It's so insane that a coin struct thousands of years ago would have such a fine relief in the design. Gold coins weren't in typical circulation and were only hoarded by wealthy people or were used only for a few large transactions at a time.
Incredible coins with great introduction! My only ancient gold right now is Valentinian I Solidus on rev., Restitutor Reipublicae with Emperor holding Labarum and Victory on the globe. Hope to buy one day Ptolemy II Mnaeion or Octadrachm where Ptolemy II is with his wife Arsinoe II on reverse his father Ptolemy I with his mother Berenike I
As a collector of modest means, I find Byzantine solidii are wonderful gold coins for a collector on a budget. The "Christ Pantokrator" is the most famous image of not just ancient Christianity, but of Byzantium at the apex of it's power, and I was able to obtain one such solidus (from a CNG auction, no less) just a few days before your video on the topic!
Oh man that Sulla Aureus is so beautiful. Hell I'll go to war too if I can get a few of these. Another amazing job. Shows why you were perfect to partner with them.
I think my favorite gold coin that I ever saw was an aureus of Faustina II. It went for 6000 euros which is beyond my current budget but is within the bounds of possible as a crowning piece. For now, I'll enjoy cleaning my little bronzes and the occasional silver piece.
That's what caught me too- Romans and moderns are lovely and all, but the incredible high-relief figures on Greeks are just amazing. And I feel a bit sad for those whose buckets are light 😜
I hope to one day be fabulously wealthy enough to afford something as singular as native Pharaonic coinage. The rarity aside there's something absolutely magical about this relic Bronze Age kingdom being forced to adopt a new technology to hire foreign warriors in the hopes of preserving their independence against a rising power, that coin is a material manifestation of the climax of Egyptian history and the changing of the guard of civilization as a whole.
My coins can't compare with the ones you show here, but I feel very privileged to have six late Roman/Byzantine solidii in my collection. One of Theodosius II, one of Leo I similar to the one you did a short video on a month or so ago. My others are one of Anastasius, one of Justin I, one of Justinian I and finally one of Maurice Tiberius. I find Roman Aurei to generally be far outside my budget, but every once in a while I find a Solidus that just barely fits and doesn't cause my wife to try out some of the techniques she reads in the murder mysteries she loves so much... 😉
Gorgeous. And it's nice to see CNG recognizing that Classical Numismatics is the best TH-cam channel on, well, classical numismatics LOL I hope they continue to sponsor and display their treasures on your channel- it's a win-win 😀
That gold stater of Nectanebo is the only true Pharaonic coin, since as it was shown by Butcher and others the common bronzes with Ram/scales are civic issues of Syrian Antioch from Roman Imperial times!
Wow so beautiful coins. Today I was wondering why there weren't any Roman mints in Spain which was so rich in gold and silver? After first century I mean.
After the massive issuing of coins in Spain during the 1st century BC and the 1st AD, the province must have been monetized enought and sufficiently integrated to the overall roman economy that coins coming from the Lugdunum and Rome mints, plus those already circulating internally must have been enough for the local economy to function.
I wanted to buy a t-shirt but I couldn't find one with Aurelian's restitutor orbis design. Very cool idea with the coin designs by the way! Are you planning to add it to the store?

You can feel honoured indeed that CNG chose you, but your channel is the best for ancient numismatics on TH-cam, so you've undoubtly earned it !
Thank you very much! :)
Enjoyed watching this Wonderful informative video ...thank you very much🌹
Thanks for watching, Im glad you enjoyed :)
I like how Herakles wrestling the lion fits so neatly into a circle. Its like the hero and the lion are forming some kind of yin-yang.
Wow, thats a very creative way of seeing it. You are right!
Unbelievable stories behind these coins .The best part is that we are learning a lot of historical events behind these master pieces..respect from 🇬🇷
Coins are an incredible way of learning about history. Nothing like having a physical manifestation of the past to spark one's interest.

Dude that egyptian stater is absolutely amazing.
Its unbelievable, such a historically significant coin!

Congrats on the CNG sponsorship.
I LOVE that Severan coin. It would be so awesome to own that.
That jugate portrait on the reverse really is incredible. The Severans have some very impressive dynastic coins
My only gold coin (so far) is a Hyperpyron of John III Vatatzes.
Thats awesome! Im soon publishing my "Top 10" coins for this year and there's some byzantine gold there too :)
@@ClassicalNumismatics Great - I'll be looking for it!
Spectacular coins. I collect ancient and medieval gold - one coin per century. I hope to go to the January 2024 show in NYC and perhaps fill some holes in that collection.
One coin per century from the invention of coinage to today sounds like an awesome collection theme!
That intricate hair behind the radial crown on the mnaieion is just stunning
These are magnificent! Thank you for sharing them with us! ❤❤👍👍
Woah, a sponsorship from CNG! Congrats!
Nice coins! Gold shining is hipnotic.
Still saving up for my first gold coin. Thankful silver ancients still have so much detail and are much more affordable.

Gold coins weren't in typical circulation and were only hoarded by wealthy people or were used only for a few large transactions at a time.
Thats true! Thats why a roman sestertius, for example, is so hard to find in mint-state condition. Most of these coins circulated a lot
Wonderful to see such rare pieces that've survived millennia. I cherish my Byzantine gold solidi.
So do I! I have a couple of byzantine gold pieces and I always stop to admire them :)
Wow, CNG has very nice coins. Im glad they are recognizing your skills as a numismatist
I love the accompanying images of the coins and text!
AMAZING COINS WITH UNBELIEVABLE HIGH RELIEF ROYAL PORTRAITS GREAT PIECES OF ANCIENT ENGRAVING ART.
I am shocked by the beauty, artistry and historical relevance of these pieces 😵💫

CNG should be exceedingly grateful to get connected to your channel.
Thank you! They are great people and some really passionate collectors work there, which is a big win for me :)
Very beautiful coins 😍 i really like your channel! Well done 👍

We had a really tough time picking just 5 coins out of the hundreds of amazing things they had on offer
@@ClassicalNumismatics That sounds like a wonderful problem to have LOL

A gold Aureus is also in my books for a future crown jewel. Id love an Antoninus Pius one, but alas, not yet.
One day we will enjoy our gold pieces :)
That is a wonderful attitude to have- I try to be like that too. It's healthy.
Love the high relief coins. And again more bucket listers. That’s gonna be one heavy bucket after a while.

Absolutely right! A total one-off, emergency issue meant to solve an imminent invasion. Its history made manifest in coin form. Spectacular!
I’ve only had 2 aureus in my collection at one time. One of Trajan and the other Vespasian. They were amazing coins.

Thanks Leo, incredible coins😮😮😮

BEAUTIFUL COINS MY FRIEND.
Amazing.

Use the search bar for "Aurelian", there are quite a few designs of him there!
@@ClassicalNumismatics hmm, I only saw the one with Sol + captives on the back
That last coun was amazing! Love the double bust reverse! Thanks for sharing. No gold but a few Romen Romen coins. One silver and several bronze.
If you ever find some Roman gold, Id gladly feature it on the channel :) Good luck!
Sulla was the most based.
Based and proscription-pilled!
😍🔥
🤤

📽️👍👍👍👍👍
I have an ancient gold coin and I don't know what it is. There's no local coin dealer in to show it to. It has men's heads on both sides.
Its this your first step to become a influencer? I hope you don't sign any contracts to own you. Good luck!
