I'm so thrilled that there are people who love and appreciated Lily Pons talent for she was truly the greatest coloratura who ever lived. I'm 81 years old and I still remember. every moment of that February night in 1948 when I saw her in person The fact that she came out of retirement at the age of 72 for one last time is unbelievable the voice is still there.
I believe it took daily practice and singing to maintain a good singing voice as Lily Pons had in her 70’s. I had a voice teacher had a career singing professionally . When she retired due to the younger singers hired, she taught. She told me she practiced and sang then every day saying if she ever gets the opportunity to perform again, she would be ready and when she was in her mid 70’s, she was hired to sing the soprano in Verdi Requem. She replaced a singer from New York who was replaced when the conductor heard her and decided he could not use her I was in the chorus and the conductor said does anyone know someone who knows the work and a soprano who studied with her recommended her. The conductor auditioned her and was impressed with her. She s
Thank you for this The quality of the voice and artistry are amazing especially for the age She was the very first singer I heard live as a young child
One of the last Golden Age giants (despite her diminutive silhouette): The voice was small, but beautifully produced and could be well heard in large auditoriums. She possessed one of those voices that Italians call: "voci che corrono". Great technique, brilliant tone and superb diction. And she had so much class and poise. A true legend.
Meravigliosa!
I have one 8" recording of Lilly and Andre singing russian songs and him conductingnot only the arias but alos instramentals. A 12" of the same. And a recital disk from the early 50's on rca . Truly a wonderful singer.
She was a lyric spinto who sang all the soprano solos high pianissimos , warm lyric and dramatic and received the best Review by a critic who was tough on singer’s performances.
WHEN THE OLD MET CLOSED IN 1964, SHE CERTAINLY WAS AMONG THE STARS INVITED TO THE GALA, BUT BING WAS IN CHARGE AND HE HAD NOT ASKED HER TO SWING THAT EVENING, THOUGH MANY OF THE OTHER STARS ON STAGE WERE ASKED TO SING. SHE WAS FURIOUS ! "THE VOICE," SHE SAID,"IS STILL THERE ! " AND SHE PROVED THAT EVEN THESE SIX YEARS LATER !!!!!!!!!!! THE PROOF IS HERE. THE VOICE, AS ALBERT STRICKLAND NOTES BELOW, WAS STILL THERE !!!
самая сияющая исполнительница в опере. Эмоционально просто искрится. Права мелизмы которые использовала Lily Pons иногда нарушали целостность мелодий и странно что она очень мало использовала трели которые исключительно украшали пение Сазерленд.
Just for the record: Lily Pons was born April 12, 1898. She celebrated her 74th birthday a month before this May 1972 concert. It’s amazing, beautiful singing. There are not many examples of beautiful singing from 74 year old sopranos. The most amazing features here are 1) the effortless production and steadiness of her voice in general and 2) the ease with which she can still sustain long phrases on high Bb, B and C. Chère nuit and the Rachmaninov song Op. 21, #7, “How peaceful” are brutally difficult to sing. At any age.
I am honored that my birthday is the same as hers on April 12th! She died in 1976 and I was born in 1976! Coincidence! Her voice is mesmerizing and she was born to sing!
+Paul Marchesano Here is a link to the program from that concert archives.nyphil.org/index.php/artifact/a93d9cef-5e79-44c9-9af6-383dbde5f421/fullview#page/1/mode/2up
I went to Xaverian high school in Brooklyn, NY and to NYU in the 1960s with a Paul Marchesano. We were very good friends through the 1970s, but I lost touch with him when he moved to SF. I tried to look him up in the late eighties, but I learned he had died. I remember he had two younger cousins. Are you related to him?
This is a miraculous concert. It's not unheard of for singers to sing into their seventies, but most who do usually need some audience indulgence. She, however, sounds BETTER here at age 74 than she did in some of her Met broadcast performances from the 1950's. The slow, extremely high lying, sustained songs (especially Chère nuit and Estrellita) she chose for this concert are very, very difficult to sing at any age. Her ease of production here is simply beyond description or criticism. She sings in French, Spanish, and Russian! She never lost her beauty and she certainly never lost her voice. It's a known fact that she had an "understanding" with Mr. K. that she would agree to do this concert only if she could cancel (even the DAY of the concert) if she felt her singing was sub-standard. Mr. K needn't have worried! She was a definitive pro throughout her entire career, and never more than on this April evening in 1972
Hi Derek, As far as I know I am not related to him. My family might have had cousins in Brooklyn, but I don't know any of them. There is oddly enough another Paul R Marchesano in Philly who I believe might have had relatives from Brooklyn.
@@catiacorrea5445 no. She was 74. She was born in April 1898, and this was May 1972. It’s spectacular singing no matter what her age. She admitted she was nervous in the first aria, but after that everything “went beautifully”. That’s certainly an understatement!
To me she was better when she was older. In a performance she did with a young Mingo, they were both better than I expected. I have several broadcasts with Pons from the 30s, 40s, and 50s and I've never been that impressed. She was also a total diva. Her dogs once pissed all over Robert Merrill's legs and she didn't even care. I appreciate some of the interviews shown with a few of my favorite singers.

That "Chère Nuit" of Bachelet- only Lily Pons can do that justice! I almost weep every time I hear it! Thank you for uploading this precious film!!

She sang with "Over Tone" also Corelli did and a lot of intelligent singers.
Obviously, Miss Pons kept up her vocal technique and did NOT abuse her voice.
this lady is in her 70s WOW, she is beautiful

Sensational!!!Grateful for you posting it.
I wonder if she practiced every day to have a voice like that at 73 and after retiring...
Pons still had the goods in her later years.
MAGIC! Thank you for sharing this!
Beautiful hands as well!
How she moves them yes, also!
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much

You're welcome. I love watching the many posts I put on TH-cam.
