Another thought: I think that Nephy was Zagan's true soul mate. They are the same. It's almost as if they were destined to meet each other. That is why Zagan didn't even hesitate, and sacrificed all his money to buy her, didn't even care about how the audience would look at him. Because it was a fulfillment of his life's purpose. If Zagan would have hesitated, someone else would have bought Nephyy, and she would have been treated badly. Then Zagan would have had to live with the pain and sorrow of having betrayed his heart when his heart told him what to do. So follow your heart, sometimes it is best to let your intuition guide you. It guides you along the path of life which leads to fulfillment of your soul purpose. Sometimes you just need to abandon logic and live according to intuition. Because that is the way that God tells you what do you need to do. And if you don't do that, if you don't complete your soul purpose in this life, then you will have to repeat your life all over again, or get reincarnated onto another planet and have a life with similar circumstances, only next time with double the consequences because you'll have the karma from this life left over as well.
I feel like most of the people who are into watching anime are just in fact that, recluses complete social rejects who have not been able to find their place in the world. Hence the writers know their audience well it seems.
