October Sky builds a quiet symphony around a particularly potent memory of Yebba’s mother-a high school science teacher who sometimes brought home the bottle rockets her students had constructed for class. “I wrote this whole story about remembering her sliding down the hall and telling us ‘Come outside we’re shooting off bottle rockets,’” Yebba explains. “That memory came to me and the words just spilled out: this story of her and the promise that she broke, in a way, because she killed herself in October. I genuinely feel like she was standing there in the room with me as I was writing it, in my studio apartment in Brooklyn.”

@@DancingCoder You gave me hope, bro.))) While you were crying, at that time I rode some horses through the druidic forests ... I don't know what came over me, but the music took over my perception of the lyrics... and the lyrics is so sad that it was easier for me, an intuitive empath, to imagine myself in a castle than to survive another someone's tragedy, as her own ... did the protective mechanisms of the psyche turn on? An amazing thing is our brain! Only proves the level of this song...

Well, she slid down the hall in her socks and yelled, "Come outside"
    No, no, no, nothing's wrong
I just happen to have a surprise
So we fell through the door like the autumn leaves
And I wrestled my brother down to his knees
Just to watch as her rocket shot into the October sky
    There's a picture of us
    In a layer of dust
    On the mantle
Right by my cigarettes that I smoke since you left
'Cause you said you had to fly
    In your October sky
Now I work in the city and I blend into the crowd
And the people grieve with me since the towers came down, down
You could cut the pollution with a butter knife
You could wake up at two and then party all night
But I'm missin' my mama, so I stand on the street and get high
    There's a picture of us
Hidden in a layer of dust
    On the mantle
Right by my cigarettes that I smoke since you left
'Cause you said you had to fly
    In your October sky
    Oh, woah, oh
And as I go back home to Memphis
    I remember days that I
    I was outside shootin' rockets
    Almost as high, high
    In your October
    In your October
    In your October
    In your October
    In your October sky

I really appreciate your honesty & vulnerability.
I was really affected by this song and it’s really validating to see another person having their own emotional experience with this music. on my end, it was really powerful to be able to see you cry and process something so openly in real time. It seemed overwhelming, which aligns with what happened to me. I sometimes get hit by an overwhelming wave of grief listening to her music, and it’s really comforting and special to not just know that other people feel that way, but to see another person actually feel it.
thank you for being willing to share that uncropped and unedited. We’re doing each other justice when we share things that vulnerably - and i think that it does her music justice too. I can’t speak for yebba, but I hope that having people come together in pain & comfort over her music is something that makes her happy. We might be grieving different things, but the grief she puts into her songs touches me really deeply and helps me have my own. what a work of art.
please, please check out some of yebba’s other songs. They’re not all as painful as this one is (for me), even though many do deal with grief. Her tiny desk is super cool and has some really uplifting songs.

I was thinking about this song and I love it so much. Yebba is such a beautiful storyteller and you're right there is a sense of comfort to the song, that has helped me in certain times of grief. The part when she begins singing a short chorus from Heart's "Alone" always touched me..... it brings that sense of nostalgia and memories. Loved your response here to Yebba, who I hadn’t listened to in over a year. I get misty eyed everyday listening to music, and I know I’m not the only one, so you have lots of company in that regard. I also relate to your comment about simultaneous emotion and comfort. I may expand on this in the future, but for now: Rene Descartes said “Cogito, ergo, sum” - I say “I feel, therefore, I am”.
Anyway, ta, mate, for this video (I’m likely showing my ignorance here as ‘ta’ probably hasn’t been used in England since I left in 1969 (told you I’m old) after 3 years in High Wycombe in the USAir Force.

This is my interpretation of the song. It’s quite a beautiful song. If you didn’t break the lyrics down I will not have pick the smallest details. I would have only noticed her story about a special person in her life. Once I found out it’s her mum, it’s even more special. It’s quite personal and she did a wonderful job. I think what she is trying to do is telling the story of her mum and it was a beautiful ones. Instead of focusing with the tragedy of what happened to her mum, she is focusing on the beautiful memories instead. I see so much love when she sing this and she is obviously has come to terms with her grieve so I will assume she sang this after quite some times had passed. It’s just seems perfect for me. It’s weird but I smiled while I watched this. So endearing. I just see her love for her mum. 🌹🌹
