I think he's a great actor, very versatile...sometimes I don't even realize it was him in a movie, especially at the beginning where he often got supporting parts. My favorite is General Hux so far...hopefully they won't kill him or make him even more ridiculous in the last movie...
You'd probably be bored out of your mind trying to learn the accent for a role... I know I've been. You'll need to work painstainkingly long hours with a vocal coach to get it correct...
@@politicalstatus197 I didn't have to, I just watched British people's lip movements then found where to put my tongue for vowels. I then listened to them say certain words and now I can speak a near perfect British accent
Congrats, you got a general British Accent. Now try to do a single person and match their accents, phonetics, etc perfectly in an impersonation and come back to me! :D
Half of an accent is the choice of words instead about being all about pronunciation of words. You can pronounce “gallons of gasoline” with an English accent but in reality the Englishman would say “liters of petrol.”
it's amazing how different he looks in his every role, like - you know it's the same person but yet he looks so different, he is an amazing actor, plays with his whole body and face (little expressions that sometimes you don't even notice on the first look), he is so underrated, I like how he tried so many different movie generes
This is so inspiring! I can barely imagine what work it must be, props to every actor and actress out there for doing an amazing job! (But he is right, if the crew and director are nice people and good in what they do, its a lot easier to portray the character)
It's when he speaks o I can hear his Irish accent. Like in Hox, op and down, mouth. It sounds so funny. I like hearing Irish accent. It's my favourite along with the posh British one. Sadly, I can't do accents at all, it's because I'm not a native English speaker. I can sometimes hear accents, but I can't put my finger on the specificalities. It's a failing.
I can hardly tell accents apart... like I do hear in the video that he's talking slightly differently when he speaks as himself than as General Hux for example, but I couldn't tell what he pronounces differently. It's probably because I'm not native English-speaker so I'm not so good at hearing little differences in the pronouncication, I only can tell when something is pronounced significantly different way from how I was taught. And I've picked up words and pronouncication from the classroom, from the internet, from movies and tv shows, so my talk is probably an odd mix of American and British English covered with a heavy foreign (Finnish) accent, I don't know. Still interesting hearing about this stuff though!
Elsa Laiho same with me. I can hear the "heavy" accents and telm them apart, but it makes me sad, that I don't really hear what they worked on in for example "the little stranger"
@@sarahfitzgerald801 Well, yeah, when I write I can usually pass as a native English-speaker (I read and watch a lot of stuff in English, I write a lot too, plus I have studied English for maybe half my life now and still continue to study it, so that probably explains), but when I speak... well, the other person usually understands me, but I really wouldn't pass as a native with my Finnish accent.
@@elsalaiho1699 if you are interested, is more about training your ears really - and starts with understanding how and why you sound the way you sound, how your mouth opens, how your tongue moves, etc. It takes a while, but it is just training. I'm majoring in English teaching, but I'm a non-native speaker as well, so it was hell going through phonetic classes. Eventually, as you become more aware of your own voice and accent, you start being able to pick more differences and educating your ear to hear things you don't really pay attention to unless you are doing it so on purpose.
Dude…I never would have realized all those characters were the same actor both because of the accent AND the drastic hair/facial hair differences between characters. I am extremely impressed.
Ya know, Domhnall, I really love your English accent when you play General Armitage Hux in the Star Wars sequel. Hux sounds funny when he says ruthlessly, "ALL REMAINING SYSTEMS WILL BOW TO THE FIRST ORDER!".
Learning different accents ruined my life. I was born in China; I lived in Germany when I was little; I went to high school and college in America; I had friends from England, Scotland, and Australia; my neighborhood are mostly Mexican now... I could a pretty good impression of their accents, but when I normally talk, I sound super weird. I gained a mixture of several different accents. It is really hard for me to fix my accent because English is not my native language, so technally, I didn't have a original standard accent.
As an actress I do the same thing, I can do more than 50 accents sadly I was not born in an English speaking country so instead I do TH-cam, it's hard to go to the UK or America to follow my dreams of doing film, I've only done stage. I really admire this actor I love this short film he was in for Burrberry.
I'm here because I read an article suggesting him for Sean if rdr2 ever gets filmed....and now I realize he's been in so many movies I watched & I just never connected him to. He's a chameleon! Strange to say esp since he's a ginger, but heck...he was even in Perrier's Bounty, which is a Cillian fave in my collection. Now I find he's in another with Gillen!! ....Apparently I'm starting a Domhnall collection as well.
The title of the video is really misleading. Fortunately I got something better than I thought. Domhnall Gleeson is more than amazing. I just admire him so much for what he is capable of doing on screen.
As a South African, I can genuinely say that we do have a very complicated accent. It all depends on the area, however. You’ve got the thick Afrikaans accent, the Cape Flats slang, the British/Afrikaans accent where it sounds like you were born and raised in the UK and came to South Africa, never lost the accent but have never actually been there in your life. It’s quite a complicated accent.
If you are doing it for theatre, I suggest watching a recording of the show and try to get your voice as close as possible, or watch movies or TV shows set in the same area your show takes place. I'm currently in Newsies, and almost all of us need an accent. Just practice!
I teach voice and diction and I am also a dialect coach. It is very challenging job to teach people who can't "hear" the difference between words like 'are', 'our', and 'hour'.
Holy shit, General Hux is the same guy as the nerd in Ex Machina? Must've been so weird between him and Oscar Isaac to see themselves play roles with such different relationships between their characters too.
Ah loooove the Southern ayaccent, y'all. Ah need to learn drawlin'! This comment is from an ex-Northerner who hated it there; Southerners are friendlier, and I love the accent and the food. My family moved down South in 1978 and I am so glad. I love the South!
I don't know what other countries, but in my experience as a Filipino (AT LEAST IN MY FAMILY) switching accents seems automatic with travel and/or switching language.
I may not be a professional actor but I've learned a bit of the British accent to the point where I can continuously speak conversations with it. All I did was just watch a couple of British TH-camrs like Emma Blackery, KickthePJ, Dan and Phil, etc etc and just pick up on their accents and imitate them.
He is Oscar worthy.
