I went into this video thinking it was about Breakin, the 1984 American breakdancing-themed musical film directed by Joel Silberg, but it turned out to be about bicycles in a movie with a similar title. I love surprises like that. Great video, nice drone footage. Anyway, I would write more but I’m late for a brunch in Beverly Hills.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Extremely well done. I was a freshman at IU in 1979 so Breaking Away is like watching a home movie for me. Whenever I come back to B-Town I try to get around to as many of the filming locations as I can. The Arboretum is holy ground for me. I actually rode on that track and trained with a Little 500 team that finished second there one year. The mailman who Dave kissed was my brother's mailman when he lived on Lincoln in the 70s! Thank you for sharing this!

Fell in love with bike racing through this movie. Was 11 when this came out, living about 90 min north of Bloomington. Into bmx already, but this started my love for the roadies. Had a custom bike (Plantenga) made in '82. Cost me $1400.00. Paper route $ was gone, lol. Good job with the video!!

In 1973 the National Speleological Society Convention was held in Bloomington. At age 16 I got into camping on the campus with hundreds of earth-science nerds. We used the gymnasium for climbing completions and showers but also had our own hot tub, steam hut and solar heated field shower set up. Cavers are capable. Quite literally into limestone, we found that quarry, that slanted slab and others. Glad Virginia mentioned how Indiana limestone can be found on Manhattan. Cutters be proud.
My Pennsylvania hometown had beautiful, blasted quarries with gravel roads into the water. The swimming was better.
I was a faculty brat and townie at our prep school so understand the town/campus dichotomy. I also got into road cycling just before this good film came out and I love seeing the bike tech of that time. Slender tubing and cloth-wrapped bars, sewn tires. I sip Cynar and eat pizza to this day. Ciao.

Same here. I could not resist -- I bought a custom Masi Gran Criterium in 1982. I still have it and love it passionately -- and I developed a passion for opera, including Flotow ("Martha") and Rossini ("Barber of Seville"), classical music, and languages: Italian, French (and German). I own the movie in every format its available, including DVD, VHS, VCR, and Amazon Prime, plus the book and a copy of the screenplay. I have an IU cream & crimson hoodie and a custom made "Cutters" white hoodie. I know the words to the IU alma mater & fight song -- and I didn't even go there.

I came of age right alongside them. I lived in Bloomington when the movie was filmed. My son's great grandmother lived in the house where the kids played. The building you circled across from the car lot was the License Branch. You got where the lot sat right as well as everything downtown. It was a real big deal when it was made. Oh and the quarry...it was some of the best swimming ever. Rooftop was just through the woods from my grandparents house. Loved the video. Thanks for the trip home.

I live in B-town and it’s great to see this. I work at IU and worked with a lady that has the bowling ball that was tossed into the display case. I guess that wasn’t in the script so the school wasn’t aware that was going to happen. She said IU officials were pretty upset about it. The 10th St Stadium was torn down a year after the movie was filmed.

For those of us who went to IU the movie brings back lots of fond memories. It's nice to see so much remains from the filming because us old farts tend to only see what has changed. As far as the Empire State building story, I believe that quarry is actually just outside Bedford and has been kept open in case any stone needs replaced.

One of my favorite movies, it's one of those movies you can watch a million times and never get sick of it. Thanks for this video, it's a shame that some of the places in the movie no longer exist especially the stadium where they had the race and it's also sad that the quarry filled in a good amount of that quarry pool but at least some of it is still intact. This was amazing! Glad you put a spotlight on this film it's such a great one. I didn't see it until after college and didn't know about the Little 500 until college. It really is a great coming of age as well as sports film that also captures Bloomington and Indiana really well. Having spent a lot of my college years going to Bloomington on the weekends from Terre Haute and then living in Bloomington for close to a year there's a lot of familiar shots and buildings in the movie and your video. I think the ones I would be most interested from the movie would be Dave's house and quarry. A real bummer about the quarry but really neat you were able to track it down and get close. Nick's English Hut is a Bloomington staple. From what I hear great Stromboli's. If you're ever in the area again let me know. I'm close to Bloomington and a lot of other Indiana cities. Indiana limestone is also a big deal and is found in lots of buildings all over including Michigan State and Princeton. I recently visited Virginia Tech's campus as well. It is definitely pretty there. Hard to beat Indiana or Notre Dame's campuses though. Great video as always!!
