  • This was by far one of the best experiences of my life. Lovely lovely animals.
    Disclaimer
When researching for this video, I learnt that there is evidence showing that elephants in Thailand are, to a certain extent, dependent on humans the same way domesticated horses are in western countries. Therefore, elephant riding is considered by some, an intrinsic part of the relationship between humans and elephants.
Based on archeological evidence, this domestication started around the year 2000 BC by the Harappan culture at Mohenjo-Daro (in present day Pakistan). However, this fact does not justify any form of mistreatment or cruelty towards elephants.
Thailand people, generally speaking, love and respect their elephants the same way we respect horses and dogs in the west. Like in anything, we should look at these things with the eyes of science and not merely because we find elephants cute and adorable. Many specialists and scientists even argue these elephants would not survive in the wild without humans since they have been domesticated for thousands of years and fully adapted to live alongside and co-dependent on humans. Even more so now with their original habitat disappearing.
Regardless, we must always choose and advocate for activities such as the ones in this video which respect the animal, its natural state and well-being.
