    This was a really useful video, my radiator died yesterday and I had to replace it, had no clue how to do it or that this car had 2 thermostats.

    Angel, me millennial. I can do small jobs, oil change , spark, coils. My radiator gave out today after 170kmiles. Orders parts online, in store. Took vehicle to mechanic. He wanted $400 for labor. I went home, saw ur video..2 days later( because i was waiting on more parts) i am complete. Feel so good and accomplished because of ur fantastic VIDEO . THANK YOU GOD BLESS U AND UR FAMILY

    In the process of replacing that large freaded freeze plug before the heater hose. Am now thinking of replacing both thermostats, and maybe the radiator and water pump too (just did the hoses a year ago). And this video is right where it is supposed to be, at the top of my search list. Love the way the video is made, "short clips" of every single step. And the camera distance is just right. Makes want to continue working on my car. Keep it up. 👍

    now this makes sense to me I finally got a location on where to thermostats are located in the Nissan Altima 2003 I've asked a lot of mechanics and they were not sure but this particular year and model does in fact have two thermostats one large one one small one if any of the ones would fail then the system will not work properly.

    Thanks for the help. I started with the lower thermostat first, Nissan part 21200 for $25 from Nissan, since it's easier. Hopefully the P0128 code stops coming back.

    • @miketipton1456
      @miketipton1456 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been 4 years. Just curious, did replacing just the lower thermostat solve your P0128 code. I have the same code that just came up on my 05 Nissan Altima 2.5l. I ask only because I am hesitant to do the repair procedure twice if I also need to replace the upper thermostat. Thanks in advance!

    • @dept76
      @dept76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@miketipton1456 it did repair the code, yes! it was an easy job

    • @miketipton1456
      @miketipton1456 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dept76 thanks again! I probably could have done just that and been fine. However, I ended up replacing both of the thermostats and the code has not returned. I would rather be safe instead of draining the coolant and taking things apart twice. But you're right, it's usually the lower that goes first. The upper was the original in my car and the lower had been replaced already. Thanks again for your response 👍

      After researching online, seeing conflicting videos, tutorials, and even diagrams that come with aftermarket replacement parts, I got ahold of a seasoned Nissan dealership mechanic who confirmed for me that BOTH thermostats in the 02-12 4cyl (qr25de) altima go COIL SPRING INWARDS (ie toward the block). This is a pretty critical determination I'd say, so please correct the content of this TH-cam video if and when you can!

    Hey Angel, I've got a an '03 3.5 VQ engine version of this car. I'm seeing in the Nissan shop manual a torque setting for nothing over 8 ftlbs for the bolts over the valve cover for the thermostat (comes as a set (thermostat inside valve already)). I'm rather a perfectionist and my torque wrench doesn't go below 20ftlbs. Would you say I need a torque wrench for this or could I guess a bit on the tension level and still be ok?

    When replacing a thermostat the spring and wax bronze cylinder sensor goes on the side of the motor and the pointy peak points towards the radiator. The wax bronze cylinder sensor of the thermostat is what senses the hot motor water and expands and opens the thermostat. See the link goo.gl/images/7evGqo
    If you don't do it like this you may be ok on normal days. But on a hot rides after you park with a hot engine the internal engine heat keeps raising the water temperature, even while stopped. The incorrect spring position and wax sensor will not activate as intended. It will remain closed and cause a build up of pressure. It could further weaken weak gaskets and other parts such as the water pump shaft gasket and start causing leaks as time goes on. Eventually something will give, a head gasket or any other gasket. It takes time, but it will eventually happen on a hot day. In this video it shows how a previous mechanic incorrectly replaced the thermostat yet the new part was again replaced incorrectly. The problem was not resolved. The problem of over heating will reoccur eventually within a year in normal climate and sooner in hotter climates. New thermostats now come with instructions because apparently videos like this propagate incorrect assumptions. Don't assume. Use better judgement and check professional documentation, references and instructions. Anyone that replaced their thermostat in the reversed order is in for a big surprise on a hot exerted ride day once you park your car and restart it. You won't blow a hose, but you may blow a gasket or spring a leak somewhere within the motor. Good luck and for your safety, redo your work if you reversed the thermostat.

      I second this post.

      Just found the official Nissan FSM online, which also confirms SPRING TO BLOCK ON BOTH OF THEM.

    There is only One Thermostat and it's the one in the front located under the Heat Shield. The other component on the side serves as the Water Control Valve, It's not the Thermostat.

      You are incorrect. The qr25 used two thermostats

      @@Sasquatch304 One thermostat in the front and the water control valve is on the side. The water control valve is not a thermostat.

    Haha that funny how you got a Toyota machine working on Nissan, but with the radiator you could have with the fans on and took the whole thing out together.

      no please dont for the sake of those who have hearing impairment. it makes it impossible to differentiate between instructions and sounds that are part of the work - which is important to know what to expect - and background noise.
