- 1 of 1,305 built! 1958 DeSoto Shopper 6 Passenger Station Wagon. This is a very rare example of a Forward Look MoPar.
This is a short and quick first look at the car since several folks have asked to see more of it! A longer in depth video will come in the future.
I roll down to Alabama to pick up this finned beauty. Then after unloading the car back home in North Carolina the first step is to raise it back up to factory height and put some correct hubcaps on.
Enjoy!

So satisfying to see those lowering blocks removed.
Big improvement to me

To each their own I suppose
It’s a thing of beauty when a well engineered system is brought back into spec. @@ryanwitman8672
Lowered cars are clapped out garbage.
Hubcaps look absolutely fantastic instead of those plastic bolt covers
Definitely putting it back to stock ride height was in order. I like the trim rings with the dog dish hubcaps. I like this one you bought, a great looking wagon.
Been saving these dogdish caps for a long time. Finally got a use for them!
Man I love everything about that car! I'm glad to see you raised it back up and put the dog dish hubcaps on it. Can't say I've ever seen one before viewing it here.
They are super rare cars. I’m glad to be able to own it!
What a great car. Super cool. looks way better at normal ride height. I love all the forward look cars, but 57-58 Desotos are the best lookers of the lot
It is a Desoto, a wagon and it is green. I LOVE IT! I do not even care that it is a Dodge in Desoto clothing.
Neat car, looks much better raised back up. 🙂
Looks way better at standard ride height and hubcaps. Nice looking old wagon- nice clean looking grill. Sad the geared starter hadn't been born yet. Very cool.
Nice wagon. Glad to see you raised it up to its proper height! Can’t wait for the next video!
Looks 100% better at proper height. Cool wagon
That's a cool old rig, Austin. Glad you finally got her.
Nice score, Austin
Magnificent car it’s the worth effort you put into it !!! This car is a work of art…. Can’t wait to see what you are going to do with this bird….
Getting the car so you could use your set of '58 DeSoto hubcaps was utterly brilliant.
Meant to be!
I want one 😊
I like that you try to keep them original
Really like the beauty rings with the Desoto dog dish caps!!! And you're right, it's much better raised up to the original ride height!!!
What a nice, honest old car -- it's great!
I like cars that haven’t had too much monkeying done to them.
I had a 1958 Desoto Firedome convertible 1 of 519 made. Bought from the original owner in the early 1990s with original paint. It was very valuable and I eventually sold it for over 30,000 but now worth easily double that. Loved that car. Nice wagon!!
What a great video for this American car obsessed Brit! No music either, amazing how peaceful it is to watch videos without daft music over them.
@@carlmichael5592 I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for commenting!
My dream car, since I was a kid, is a 58 Fireflite Sportsman in red and white....a four door hardtop, please. Never found one. Love your wagon. Your colors were very popular. I have a Johan Fireflite hardtop promo that our salesman gave me when Dad traded in his 53 DeSoto.... for a Plymouth Belvedere sportsman in 1958. It was a recession year, so we couldn't afford the DeSoto.
That’s pretty cool that you got one of the promos directly from the dealer!
There are two 58 Fireflite 4dr htp here in Hamburg/Germany, both in very nice condition. The one is blue/white, the other is red/white.
@@olafthiemer5759 Wow. Spent a few days in Hamburg a couple of times. One of them there were many Smart cars on the streets.
Awesome car really, really nice brings back.A lot of memories used to ride To school in one of those😊
This is a great example of a great mopar wagon product. My dad had a '57 Chrysler wagon I loved it. Two tone blue . l loved riding in it. It looked beautiful. I remember seeing wagons all over the place all makes and models. My all time favorite of dads was a '50 ford woidie. Fad never bought new cars,, always used ones. I loved it because I always had different rides growing up. Mam, I really like the rings N caps. It was stupid lowered! Looks right and great now!!. I'm 76 yrs old I love seeing all these old rides!!!!
Lucky score man. I'd love to get my hands on a late 50s desoto, Especially a wagon
What a find! Beautiful! I'm consumed with envy
You already improved it 1000%!
I think so too!
It's good to see that car returned to stock height. I remember years ago when a Chrysler product would come in for a wheel alignment I would check the front-end for loose parts and then check the ride height. You would just crank those torsion bars up and everything was cool; no need to replace springs or use spacers. Prior to 1958 those bars would break and need to be replaced, however Chrysler got that straightened out. I am wanting to say all Chrysler cars had torsion bars until the front-wheel drive K-cars arrived in 1981. This car has longitudinal torsion bars that extend toward the rear of the car held into a crossmember. Later, the F-body cars (Aspen, Volare) had transverse torsion bars up front and you could adjust those as well. GREAT VIDEO!
My favorite one so far Austin....I'm a wagon nut. Yes, Rare to begin with and I'm sure the rest were beaten into the ground...like MOST wagons.
Survival rate is probably quite low. 1 of 1303 makes this a very rare MoPar!
I never knew they made Desoto wagons until today It mustve never crossed my mind but seeing this thing with that long minty green 2 tone pattern is almost hypnotizing to see
Green is one of my favorite car colors. This car looks excellent in two tone.
@@ObsoleteAutomotive I personally think most 50s and even 60s cars have the body lines to pull off a green really well
Car looks 1000x better on stock suspension height
Yes. Just like Dodge Coronets loaded, appears like….( ours was 1959 Coronet’s)
Mr. B. Here ! 🍩☕️👀😎👍. Very cool , I have 1958 Olds Super 88 holiday coupe !
I bet it's a lot of fun getting bolts loose that were on there for 70 years. That's a really cool car.
Very jealous! That’s a fantastic vehicle! Love the green
Green is one of my favorite car colors. And it looks great on this one!
It’s just great! I’m stuck with my Italian project cars, but I need a winged Chrysler product at some point!
@@Mitkawatch They are great cars. You’ll enjoy owning one I’m sure!
What a rare and charming old Mopar!
Nice find, that's a keeper for sure and yes to dual quads on the 350.
Love this DeSoto wagon. My family had anew 58 Plaza that I still remember.
Pretty awesome and rare Mopar, Austin. Congrats! Thank you for restoring the suspension to normal height.
Austin, you have a beautiful DeSoto there! Don't change anything on the body. Nice wheel treatment! Thumbs up!
You find really good cars/vans etc really good condition for their age. I just got done watching your 79 Dodge van from California road trip. I would have loved to pick up that van for a beater Home Depot runner. I live in California and makes me wonder how many of these types of vehicles exist sitting in someone's garage or backlot.
They are still out there! I love finding old original vehicles that haven’t been messed with!
Austin, Another gem!!! I love it. My Mom's first car and her favorite was a 1947 DeSoto Coupe. It was gray and she named it Betsy. My ex wife would say about your wagon that "it's green, it's old and it's ugly!" Boy was she wrong. My current wife loves it. It's a wagon and is one year newer than I am. I love it too. I sure do enjoy your channel and can't wait to see more. Thank you for sharing. --Dick.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I love the ‘47s!
That car is so awesome !!😎😎
Thanks for showing your DeSoto. It is always enjoyable to see a nice survivor from the era.. 1958 was the first year for that B block. If memory serves, the longer produced 361 version appeared in 1959 . It looks like you've got a very nice car to start with. Good luck and enjoy it.
I like the look of the hub caps and trim rings, especially if the wheels were the lighter, accent color. But, 58 Desoto wheel covers are good looking too. The hub caps ARE rare, I have never seen them before. Congratulations, Austin, on a fabulous find.
Beautiful colour scheme.
Very nice to see it at the proper ride height!
Had a '60 Dart Pioneer Wagonback in the early '80s
Awesome Ride!!!
Never have seen one of these. Thank you for taking care of a bit of history.
That's a really nifty and rare classic. Thanks for sharing.
Great buy. These were rare when new.
Love it. Great body style and colors. Much better without being "lowered" (why?) and with it's original hubcaps.
Nice wagon. Great find!
Coral Gables 🌴🇺🇸 Hehe. You helped return to the original 👌 My Dad had one new back in the day.
What an amazing find, especially since it is so rust free! Restoring it to the correct ride height with stock wheel covers is a definite improvement. My preference is to keep cars stock, but that’s me.
It’s stock for me! Not big on customs.
First time watching one of your videos. Loved this car. A real treat. I have heard of a Desoto Firesweep...but never the Shopper model. Thanks for sharing.
The shopper nameplate was only used on the 6 passenger wagons. So seldom seen.
She’s a beauty
I'm glad he put the stock wheelcovers back on it.
I have not watched the video yet but let's see if you're reading my mind I hope you put it up to stock Rinehart height again? Also get rid of them funky lug nuts and trim rings and put the stock hubcaps back on it then she'll be looking good.
That’s exactly what I did.
God, that brings back some memories!! Thanks for posting! ❤️ I think the hub caps and trim rings look GREAT!
What a beauty. Thanks for taking care of it.
Love the look of this wagon great combo of looks and motor !!
Your car is in amazingly good original condition. Congratulations.
love those wagons. one cool ass car!
That's a cool wagon!
You are living my dream! I’m a wagon man myself looking to buy one soon nevertheless love the new wagon you acquired! Greetings from Las Vegas.
An extra board or two behind the rolloff ramp would help.
That's a beauty! I love the color. 👍
I never heard of a shopper edition probably marketed to suburban moms in the 50s
I Love it keep the beauty rings
My dad's 59 galaxy had those seat covers you sweated in the summer and got the chills in the winter
1958 DeSoto Firesweep Shopper wagon - very rare model now. A DeSoto in a Dodge body, the lower priced Firesweep series was only three model years, 1957-1959. Firedome was mid-series and Fireflite was the top of the line with the rare Adventurer super high performance sports model.
I love this car! Love the original color scheme and hope you keep it all original (but you can upgrade things like putting an alternator in it and more modern brakes. I recommend more modern brakes on all these 1950s cars. You have go power with the V8s, so you gotta have good stopping power too. Things like that don't affect its looks or performance, or resale value, but are purely mechanical improvements. The more expensive models should be upgraded to disc brakes if possible. Jay Leno says so.
I absolutely cringed when I seen that car so low in looking all worn out. It was so refreshing to watch you saw those stupid things off. Too busy doing that to make the car run right with proper choke as well as that cotter pin. Thank God you have that car that's all I can say
Definitely looks way better now!
Sounds like a PT Boat idling. It is super cool in every respect. And it's NOT computerized, doesn't resemble a Mini Van-SUV-Crossover crap they call cars. It does however need to be raised 4". I even like the color. It's got more chrome than 4 Toyotas put together in metal. Outstanding.
YES!! Thank you for restoring it back to it's original ride height!! I absolutely hate it when people lower classic vehicles, especially pickups. That's a duel headlight beauty!! Love duel headlight cars and trucks. I have a 1960 Chevy Apache pickup with duel headlights. Love it!! That is one looong car. Plenty of space when you go "shopping".😉
Well said turns cars into clapped out garbage
DeSoto the first MoPar to have a Hemi. First DeSoto wagon I've seen.
Love your videos and your car's and Vans
There was a Firedome model too. My neighbors had one. Big engine, real fast.
Beautiful Desoto, we watched your videos here in Brazil
@@adrianodenk400 Glad you like the videos! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Wow
A Very Rare Car 3:05
d in Canoga Park, CA when I was a kid and I seem to remember a wagon similar to this in the next cul-de-sac over from our place. Nice ride!
@@stuartkline1611 This car originally came from California actually. And they didn’t build very many.
She's a beauty!! Great video!!
I’m just starting to learn a little bit about cars, This channel is so awesome. It’s really cool to get to learn about mopar stuff and see how things evolved over time
Great job. I hope you got a great deal. Thanks for saving it.
Proud owner. Congratulations.
Beautiful car.
You can never go wrong with a dog dish hubcap
My sentiments exactly!
Congratulations on your Firesweep, love it, its been on my bucket list since the 1970;s
Now that's a nice grocery getter. Thank you for the lowering delete lol.
Yea I use my cars so lowered ones do me no favors.
I'm with you buddy I don't like those lowered cars
Nice ride,,,,,,,,,Chomping at the bit
Great car. 58 was the beginning of the end for DeSoto. The Eisenhower recession really hurt sales of mid tier models and Chrysler didn’t sell enough cars to warrant 5 makes.
I would leave the patina go to vice grip garage and order you some of the shine juice
@1:38 ... was there not a way to go up farther on the trailer so the door would open? If not block the wheels and strap her down firmly while leaving the thing in neutral so you'd only crawl out, and push her back or forward to get back in again. Of course all this is a perspective from here so I can't be sure... just asking.
Edit: @11:54 ...does anyone else see a 1959 Fairlaine or Galaxy even the bumper says Thunderbird...
Nice 😊
Nice survivor and a wagon too; YEAH!
Speedometer is not a ribbon that goes across but a drum that rotates . Look real close at it as you accelerate and you can see the black color on drum rotate .
@@elliotwelz9793 I know… it’s just describing how it looks. It doesn’t have a needle and appears to scroll… Just like calling it a “thermometer speedometer.”
Has nice long arrow-like lines but probably handles like a sponge. I like the green and yellow chewing gum paint.
Good exterior colors. Great that it is four door. -Nothing worse than a wagon with two doors so it is hard to get to the space (unless it is a subcompact or smaller vehicle) which makes no sense but turns on the guys where style always reigns supreme über alles. Functional design is so important & enjoyable if you really live with a vehicle & use it, instead of just want to look at it... Much much better when at original height (or even a little higher like American cars typically were set up when sold in Australia (to deal with the rough road conditions) when they might use larger diameter wheels/tires, somewhat stiffer springs & shocks, etc.). I always thought the tower taillights in the late 50s Desotos were handsome. Neat that you can exchange them for the Plymouth lights. I have appreciated the solidity of vehicles that are not convertibles, and not hardtops, so the glass is held securely even after 100k miles on the odometer, and don't rattle when the door is closed.
Thanks, interesting overview……Obviously, very similar & close to my Parent’s 1959 Dodge Coronet (?)Station Wagon/9 Pass/Push Button/**Rear Facing Seat( I did not care for riding there, etc.)/PS,PB,V8(* ??, I was not interested in *Wagons, getting my 1954 Ford/2DR/V8 CUSTOMIZED in 1962)…..Us five Kiddos fitted in fine, & seemed like a sturdy Driver, & powerful (t@king my Drivers License test in it)…
Imagine now you had it brand new in 1958 and would try to trade it in for a new car. It would be valued worthless(probably 800$) in 1965, very hard to comprehend that concept these days. The lowering blocks for this car where not helping it , so I approve removing them for good. Original hub caps looks super awesome. The dent in the fender can be fixed with some patience and sheetmetal work. At least its not rotten from the eye brow and lower valance or just bondo and fiberglass.
I like the DeSoto look much beyter tham Dodge. Grill looks more like a 58 Ford, and thpse DeSoto tailights!...😅
Love the wagon!!!!!
There were TWO 1958 Desoto Explorer Firesweeps 9 passenger wagons in a local salvage yard. I tried to buy them for years. The man died and his sister crushed the yard out. The wagons were saved but never saw them turn up. Would live to know what happened to them.
Oh jeeze. I’d wonder!
Another great find
