MATSUMOTO-KAGU (FURNITURE)
Matsumoto City and environs, Nagano Prefecture
The manufacture of wooden furniture has been developed here since the late 16th century, when the Matsumoto castle was constructed. The techniques of wood joinery in this furniture making are structural joints that bind and joints that extend a length, using no nails. They are so finely crafted that some of this furniture cannot be disjointed, once fitted together.

Rarely if ever do I tip my hat and bow to a fellow craftsman but these guys are the real thing. I am humbled and grateful they are still out there. If only other nations valued the crafts as much as Japan, the world would be a much saner and safer place.

The idea of nailless furniture is nice but unpractical and expensive.
The wood expand and contract with humidity in the air, which makes the wood a slight warpage or a twist over time , even if it is made accurately. The wooden nail also expands and contracts so it prevents looseness and distortion.
The humidity in Japan differs by seasons, these delicate techniques are important to use the furniture for a long time.
