Former US Army here, I loved the M7 and preferred it to the M9 we were issued for the M16A2. I ended up buying an M7 for myself and never carried the M9.
Awesome video mate. I joined the NZ Army in 92. We had the KCB77 to start with but they broke when bayonet training. (I assumed the 77 was Austrian? - as our first steyrs were AUG AI. But that is just an assumption on my part. I think I have one in my garage somewhere. )So from memory by about 93 we replaced them with the M7. I took the M7 to Bosnia in 94. I thought the M7 a great strong, simple bayonet. Great vid mate. Cheers Dave 🇦🇺 🇳🇿
@david6920-r6z I believe the 77s were German made but came with the original Steyr CES kits. When you guys started getting Lithgow made rifles you stopped getting them. I could be wrong though, I would love to hear what you know about current issue kiwi bayonets, what types, manufacturers, date etc. Very hard to find good info, I was born a Kiwi myself but swam over the ditch pretty young
@@pointynotsharp good to know mate, thanks. Ok sure I will look into it and let you know. Well will try to - our Logies are a dour bunch. I did a video on the M3 fighting knife and also an Army Golok if you would like to check them out. Cheers mate
Great video, definitely the only one on TH-cam of this bayonet for sure. The side mounted bayonet lugs on the UGL-fitted F88s sound interesting, I’ll have to find some pictures.
I don't think there is a more authoritative source of this particular data on Aussie M7s than this video. Well done again! No wonder I can't seem to locate one anywhere as Australia has never released them from government property.
Thanks for the kind words, I put a lot of effort into this one. I'm also looking forward to my F88 video. Sadly they are very hard to find, they should be cheaper in the US at least. I've seen them sell for $650AUD down here
I was in 44 Transport Squadron (Tasmania) and my recruit course (2/93) was the first intake to be trained with the F88. The bayonet issued was the M7 with the dark green scabbard. Once I was back with my unit they had the same issued M7 with dark green.
@ScottEvans-vk7hse they would have been leftover stock of US M7 bayonets in M8A1 scabbards. They were already in Australian service with the M16A1. Unfortunately there isn't a way to identify one used in Aussie service
I joined 3RAR in mid 1991. We got issued what we call Steyr bayonet (KCB) then straight to Buck knife as we called it. F88s only rolled out at 3 RAR when we got there. So we had F88s and jumped Mag 58s . We got F89s late in 1992 I think. The F88c only got issued to ParaBG late 90s. I never in all my time in 3RAR used the M7 or later in 1999 6RAR. I never even saw them in Choco Infantry. At Singo I was in last platoon to use SLR, M16s . We only had SLR bayonets as I remember.
The KCB 77 was crap, the blades broke on them, then we got issued the buck knife(m9)blades didn’t brake but it was terribly big and clumsy I ditched that and bought myself the old m7 took the plastic of the handle and wrapped it with para cord and never looked back.
I used the us M7 and M16 in America, they have the same dummies but the parrying arm is spring loaded..when you parry it comes back and whacks you on the upper arm, after about the third your arm goes dead.you really have to get your killing face on to keep going.
Good video, I have had a couple of these but not seen any modified ones yet. If anyone interested, Henry’s Military Bayonets have one for sale, not cheap tho. The FZR marked M 7 was the hardest one to find by far.
@@JMorris297Same type bayonet but stamped US M7 & FZR on cross guard, and believed to be made by Frazer Manufacturing Corporation. I have only seen 1 for sale on eBay here and the one I got at the Toowoomba gun show a few years ago.
i bought a presumably mint aussie m7 from a seller in victoria. still in the box with a paper/foil wrapping. the a8 marking on the sheath but none on the knife. a card with numbers in the sealed plastic including A-4/74 and DAAF03-73-D-1030-0001. really sturdy and well made. does it sound legit to you? would love your advice.
@relaxedXgen sounds like a US version A-4/74 refers to date of manufacture, April 1974. Nearly 20 years prior to the Aussie contract. The DAAF number is the contract, I couldn't find it after a quick search. But there should be info online somewhere outlining which contract it was
@ thank you. i’ll look into it as well. i own an ontario m7 so i’m familiar with the piece and the quality matches plus the packaging is aged and authentic to my eye. thank you.

i prefered the way the L1A2 bayonet affixed to the old L1A1, single handed, no mess no fuss.
Great presentation cobber, cheers.
TH-cam's algorithm did me a solid for once. Nice video mate, always love seeing little pieces of history like this one.
Australian equipment and camo are just on another level

I know you looked at this one in a museum, but where do you buy the ones you own?
Also, how do you make sure the bayonets are legit?
@LowkeyAscendedYT mainly online sellers and ebay, as for authenticity, a bit of research
@ thanks
That is the same bayonet we were issued for the M16 back in the 1970s and 80s just a different scabbard.
They were not "designed" for the F88.
Look at that baseplate the other way up, it looks like a koala!
I've been told in South Korea they call M7 bayonets Koalas 🐨, definitely looks the part
Bayonets on bullpups is silly
I have an m7, an AUG, and now I'm just waiting for the bayonet lug.
copy of the yank m16
This is a dog 💩 bayonet made of absolute inferior low quality chinesium. What type of take is this. 😅
I seem to remember being issued a buck combat knife with bayonet lug. Might be wrong, was way back early mid 90s.
@whocanmakeyourwholeweek7272 you are right, the M9 was the operational bayonet and the M7 was usually reserved for training
@pointynotsharp long time ago. Good review brother
