    Really like your channel. I totally agree on the advice regarding temperature. When I first got my gecko I was afraid to let the temperature get anywhere near 80F due to "popular wisdom" saying temps in the 80s could cause them to stress out and die. She had little appetite, was lethargic and was significantly underweight. After trying many things, I finally tried raising the temp to the 77-80F range, and overnight she became much more active, started eating vigorously, and shot up from 17g to 27g in 6 weeks! Thanks for being willing to give advice that may be controversial.

    I'm not sure if you have spoke about this in any videos since this one, but there are some crucial points about humidity as well as the not chasing numbers which you are definitely right about. Things such as humidity cycles and how it actually 'works' at different points in the day and how cooling and ventilation impacts humidity levels. It seems quite recent that this particular area has been studied more and it will hopefully be the next big change that sweeps the hobby. I know that Dillon at Animals at Home has gone into some detail about it in his videos. The more it's shared and spoken about, the better!

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that point is missed entirely in most parts of the hobby! Spray-downs should ideally be performed of an evening to mimic the rise in relative humidity that comes with sun-down. We should also seek to recreate humidity cycles on the larger scale of seasonal change. It typically rains more in the British winter than the British summer; I am sure similar variations must occur the globe over. Of course, we do not have total control over relative humidity with the way that we are doing things currently, but I am sure improvements will be made in the years to come.

I just want the best for my lil girl and I’ve been trying my best to learn everything I can about how to give her the best care. I would like a more in depth video on feeding, like how much to feed them, in terms of amounts and with insects, what insects, how much of insects to feed… size of insects, how to tell if your gecko is at a healthy weight. Gecko poop, what is healthy poop, basically crested gecko digestion in general.
    Another thing I’ve been wondering about is crestie behavior. What are they like in their tank? What is normal behavior? How would you tell if something is off?

    I've seen her bask a little from time to time so im happy i got her some heating.
    I also offer her a uvb bulb, i use the coild one and not the tube ones, I know its not the best but she knows where the bulb is and sometimes she will change where she sleeps and bask near the uvb bulb, im planing to get a tube in the near future but right now she seems happy and thriving seeing that her past owner did not offer his geckos any heating or uvb.

    a suggestion: instead of decholrinated water, buy or make distilled water. It is already free of cholrine, and bonus, wont cause hard water staining and crusting on the glass.
    Handling: I see where you come from on this. They can be jumpy and startled. That said, starting very young, getting them desensitized to human touch and handling can and should be done. You want to make sure that you can handle them at least enough to do health checks and administer medications if they get sick. So you start with feeding. We hand feed our little guy from the mixing bowl of his food. He associates us with yummy food, which makes him less afraid of humans. We are careful with heights. He is handled near the floor or over a table so that if he jumps off, its not a long drop and sudden stop. Since our cresty is almost 2 and still has his tail, eats from our hands, and chills on my daughters arm like a pro, I figure we are doing something right. :)

    I do wonder if non-chlorinated tap water is better than distilled water. Tap water will have some trace minerals that could be beneficial (though those can probably be gotten from food). Tap water is only chlorinated during particularly hot months of particularly hot summers (only happened once in the last 5 years or so), so I guess the water should be fine.

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I have always thought along those lines, especially with regards RO water: very few things will be drinking such depleted water as that in the wild! I suppose if you came from a really hard-water area and kept frogs it might be an idea, but for the majority of people and herps, buying fancy water just seems like a good way to waste money...

    Do you think a 45X45X90 exoterra with at least 4 different fast growing plants with 2 of them producing big leaf, a few branches and hollow barks are fine ? I don't have any experience in terrarium, so i don't know what is too much or too litle and i want my future gecko to feel secure.
    I plan to spend around 500€ in the setup alone, i already have the plants. So, 500 for the terra, lighting (one day for the plants 20w led one 3w at night), heating ( a 20w coil resistance on top and a heating mat glued in the top back for winter, my winters are cold but with the thermostat it's fine i guess ?), thermostat, thermo/hygrometer and what goes inside the terra minus the plants.
    I will put 2 to 3 hides, one on top, one in the midle and one near the bottom, to have a temp gradient for his hides.
    Do they eat the cleaning crew ? Isopods and collembola. Do i need to feed the cleaning crew after the gecko is living within the enclosure ? Do i need to supply them a few flat rocks to live under ?
    Thank you for your video anyway, cheers.

    I have a led grow light the ramps up and down for the plants in a new bio active setup. I have this inside a Vision cage and real close to the light it get to about 82-83F about halfway down it’s close to 78-79 and near the bottom about 70-72. Do I need to worry about the heat in the warmest part? I can probably turn the intensity down but since more than half is ok I wondered if I was over thinking it.

  • @julieta116
    @julieta116 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If I don’t get a UVB light for my gecko do I have to dust their insects with a calcium powder with d3 or without ? Or does their food contain d3

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nobody can tell you how much D3 is required by a crested gecko, or indeed any other reptile species. You therefore cannot successfully match the D3 requirement of any reptile through dietary supplementation alone. (Sure, many people seem to get good results on the face of things, but the level of guesswork is startling.)
      What we can say for certain is that the natural synthesis of D3 in the skin following UVB exposure and some warmth is primarily responsible for meeting the unknown D3 requirement of many reptiles in the wild.
      For want of a simple lamp, is it not then imperative that we provide our animals with UVB?

    • @julieta116
      @julieta116 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JTB Reptiles ok thank you One question would it be safe for me to provide a calcium supplement with d3 if my gecko has a uvb light or would that be too much d3

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As I say, nobody can really answer that question 🙂 The fact of the matter is that nobody has done any rigorous scientific studies into the dietary requirements of reptiles, so exactly what we need we just don’t know.
      It’s safest to provide UVB radiation at a natural intensity for the gecko alongside some low-level D3 supplementation - what is in the crested gecko diet you mix up should be sufficient.
      So, no calcium with D3 for cresties (unless someone actually finds out otherwise in a rigorous test).

    I am very new to the hobby of gecko keeping and am very confused about basking areas and keeping the terrarium warm over night. In creating a warm spot for the gecko to bask in, am I supposed to keep the heat source on all day long, or am I only supposed to keep it on for a certain amount of hours. Also, in the winter time my house gets really cold. How do I keep it warm over night for the gecko without hurting the terrarium or the animal? (Am I supposed to keep a heat source on all night long?)

      You want the heat source on for twelve hours per day, just as you would do with any other light. At night, it can safely drop to 18 degrees C (about 65 F) without an issue.
      If you do need night time heat, ie it’ll get colder than this, you can use an Arcadia Deep Heat Projector, as I explain here: th-cam.com/video/XG7bA3sUIJ8/w-d-xo.html

    So, about supplementation - feeding this fruit food with no additional supplements, feeding live food with calcium once a week, and feeding live food with multivitamins once a month should be okay? And feeding cresties four times a week is enough?

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For my adult, I feed about twice a week: one feed with insects, the other with fruit paste. I use Arcadia’s dusting schedule, but this isn’t the only way it can be done - actually, nobody has scientifically tested how we should be supplementing reptiles, so it isn’t so much an exact science as just making sure to give them good variety.
      Young cresties will need feeding more often and may not touch any fruit, although it should still be offered.

      Leave him be - travelling is, as you say, nothing but undue stress. Geckos don’t really go in for bonding with people, so I wouldn’t worry about that.

      Lol yes, it is marcgravia! I got it from Dale of DMS Vivaria - he’s well into his darts and day geckos, so he’s able to get plenty of things that I couldn’t myself!

    Search up “day better LED lights“ would that be OK to use for a crested gecko. If the lights are at The top of my room and I use them at the lowest level. Like the less light level

      Do you mean, “could I use them as the only lighting for a crested gecko?” If so, definitely not.
