- England claim only their third win over Brazil in March 1990, thanks to a goal by Gary Lineker and a key refereeing decision going in their favour in the second half to deny the Brazilians an equaliser.

This was the 1st England game I went to, remember my dad picking me up early from school for the trip to Wembley on s Wednesday night.
Have to admit that I used to dislike English international team until 1990... One of the raesons was that I was a fan of Maradona and Argentina. After England defeated Cameroon in 1/4 I even began to hate Robson's squad... but then I saw the 1/2 against W.Germany, who was my second favorite in this WC. This game changed me... english players were heroes in this difficult game, even they lost after dramatic penalty shootout. Really respect this team of Bobby Robson now.

Careca was a great player, amazing skills and intelligence.

There are a lot of clowns who say that Maradona never had another stars around him in Napoli. Napoli was full of great players, and one of them was Careca. Also Alemao was one of my favorites.

Branco's free kick technique was fantastic,no player now has the nerve to full-on strike a dead ball with everything given a 20yd run up.I used to do it, twisted my ankle badly but persisted till I had it.Not shown in this match was the breathtaking first minute Brazil passing movement.

Leaving aside that it's hardly shocking to often only be beaten by the odd goals or draw just as many times against one of the best teams in the world, it's not as if these two teams play each other that regularly anyway.

Love how the ref got his red card out, as if it was a gun holding off attackers. He never even sent anyone off, but he was swinging it around like Clint Eastwood.
Should have used it. The player immediately realised his mistake, and started defending the referee from the others' protests, which probably saved him.
Oh yes? Where did Brazil end up in the World Cup 1990 a few months later? And where did England end up? Brazil deserved to have beaten Argentina quite clearly in the 1/8 Final, so they can't have been that bad. England reached the 1/2 Final, so they can't have been bad either. For the record, Brazil 1974 was worse, and Brazil 1966 also. Incidentally, Brazil 2006 was very good on paper, but their performances were hardly better than 1990.

The mystery about a blatant handball like this is how three officials can fail to spot it. It's a shame that Pearce couldn't get his head close enough to fool them all like Maradona in the 1986 World Cup.
Maybe pearce should have been saving the penalties instead of taking them against West Germany!

The ref made a huge mistake against Brazil. It should've been a penalty call for Brazil 'cause of a handball
Or a goal. Apologies to Brazil from the country which prides itself on fair play, but please take consolation from that it was only a friendly, where in the1986 World Cup we were knocked out by a more clever handball, and none of the England players assailed the referee.

With people saying this was the worst brazilian team in world cup history is false..they came out of the group stages in 1990 with 3 wins total points..only Italy and Brazil got total points in that first round..and in the Round 16 they outplayed Argentina and should of won in Turin..it was just a touch.of genius by.Maradona/Canigga which.killed Brazil...they could of easily made the Semi Final im Naples to.play Italy in 1990

yes but they played dreary football in the first round and were fortunate to beat Costa Rica and Scotland...they were clearly superior to Argentina and were unlucky to lose but, overall, Brazil's impact on Italia 90 was largely forgettable
I was at this game, one of if not the last game, before they made it all seater stadium in the 80s till all seater what a great place to be supporting England, or even your club side, but knowere near as great with all seater we don't go to football matches to sit like choirboys 🏴

I don't remember the world champion, where the Brazilian soccer national team potentially could not become the world soccer champion, which is why they became the world soccer champion many times, and in this game the Brazilian national team clearly dominated and the referees should had to count the goal against England...The England team also had great football teams in the 80s, 90s and after, just was a little unlucky, first an unfair referee decision in the game against Argentina team, when the referee defended Maradona's " God's hand goal scored in the England goal, other times lose game in the penalty series, after the main and extra halves...
Today, pearce would have been sent off, penalty would have made it 1-1. Extra man would have killed England, 3-1 Brazil, and Robson would have been under pressure. Then Pearce maybe not selected for W Cup and England would have won it because the clown missed his penalty in the SF. This ref fkd everything up that night. btw, Brazil were far better in this one.

Except England only made the semi-finals of the World Cup four months later...they might have won the whole thing if they could make some clutch penalty kicks. To say it a different way, Brazil was talented for sure, but they didnt have a great WC in Italy. Brazil was definitely robbed of a goal in this match. It should have been 1-1.
England actually only played one good match at Italia 90. The semi vs West Germany. Prior to that, lucky to survive vs Belgium and even luckier vs Cameroon.

A clear handball by Pearce, and the ball probably crossed the line, which means that the score should have been 1-1, with Pearce sent off. The Brazilian number 5 should have been sent off for assailing the referee. After that it was almost one-way traffic; England don't like to cheat.

They lost to Argentina in the second round and that proves my point that this was one of the worse Brazilian teams in history yet they played quite well against a strong English team in Wembley. That English team could have won the world cup.
I think 1990´s Brazilian team tends to be underated. It was a good team that had plenty of good results by that time. Not brilliant, but way better than Argentina, that managed to reach the final. This team was the basis for 94 winning squad.

They should have put Argentina to the sword but were wasteful. The through ball for Cannigia's goal was Maradona's best moment of the entire tournament. Sublime.
