ACTUALLY, the front-lines where deadlocked at that point, both sides at the end of their ropes. The reinforcements made by someone who had not suffered from the strain of war, tipped the scale into a landslide... UNLIKE the U.S. - Canadian war where the united states had their a**es handed handed to them from the start...
Typical human treachery --- zetas prime - defensive invasion of a non human target that wasn't bothering us in any way.
Great story, but in reality, we are up against civilizations that are hundreds of thousands and millions of years old. I don't we would ever be able to catch up with their technology, even if we tried. We would have to have their permission for any colony we might try to start in the future.
Not necessarily. If one of them attacks than their technology left behind is free game. And settling or mining planets in our system shouldn’t cause too much of a problem BUT at the same time one of them could just as well decide that our expanding could pose problems, which if you listen to more of these there’s always one main common theme, that humans are masters of death and war which is why in almost all of them we tend to try and avoid war. . . My bad that went way off topic. But hopefully it made sense.
Once we achieve the technology to reach another inhabited planet they wouldn't be that far ahead regardless of how long they have been traveling the cosmos. The tech to leave your solar system is a huge leap but after that I don't know how much more advancement you could make or be willing to spend money on to make. These fictitious stories assume that their are 1000's of species capable of these feats however if that were true then where is the evidence of their existence. You'd think they would at the least be observing our planet. Maybe they are or have at one time.

We don't have to ask.
if there is no colonies in a system, then it's a free system.
If nobody use the infrastructures left abandonned for millenias, then it's free real estate.
If an abandonned colony is willing to come with Earth lead Federation, then it's free conquering.
If we found ruins of any ship and reverse engineering the tech, it's free tech.
If we exterminate without any agression for the other side, steal form living beings, etc, then we deserve the hatred.
There is a great story that you should read "Those who run" an other HFY story. Or the one with the decline of the delpan empire. TL:DR enslaved humanity during 30 years finally rebelled, liberated all of the neighbors then the galaxy, and once the empire defeated, send the lawyers.
No matter the diffence in tech level, we will survive, and out of spite ruin the aggressor.
We have been at war almost our entire history.
