magic square is probably the only legends company where "they should really upscale this to voyager/masterpiece size" is an actual valid critique of them
from what I've seen of their MP scale brawl I still hold the stance that magic square should just be an MP company, their engineering style is much better suited for that and their track record for MP releases has actually been pretty consistent from what I've hear.
Swindle has the "Blurr" issue where animated and other adaptations like Earthspark evolved that original character and personality in a way that makes rolling them back display how necessary that evolution was and how G1 inspired future takes should incorporate them.
Man i was going to comment that just to be a pretentious fake military expert lmao I guess smoke Launchers are more akin to mortars or Grenade Launchers which I think still technically might be considered guns/firearms/Artillery?
The sort or semi-skeleton the combined mode uses is what I was wishing Legacy Superion would do. Particularly with the waist and thighs being a separate piece and the robot still becoming the core torso
0:35 Liokaiser! It's all your fault I went and got him (or at least the guys who are out so far) and now I'm hooked on Iron Factory... either way he looks great with my CHUG Victory set (2 Haslabs and Dinoking, though he's a bit small). Thanks for that. Also, I'm so sorry for your loss. If you need time for yourself we all understand.
Might sound odd but the plastic looks like a rubber. Some kind of pencil rubber that’s coloured to make it more entertaining for kids, like something you’d see in a class room. I can taste the rubber already
the main reasons that is keeping me from getting in to this set, is the fact that i have no clue which version of each figure i should get, and not in the good "to many options" way, but in the "all versions have a critical flaw" type of way. One version does not have painted eyes, the other does not have a painted face, the next has clear plastic that looks awkward. And then the masterpiece scale ones came out and aren´t really a big enough improvement to make them worth the extra price.
Can confirm the lower QC on the magic square menasor box set, my bestie's menny's left leg is loose and a tab snapped off because he took deadend off of the skeleton exactly as video instructions say to
I have the complete magic square bruticus and man does it look lovely on display but i was questioning my will to live tryna transform some of them, thankfully with their MP scale ones, its much better
What’s the general community consensus on Blast off X Onslaught? I haven’t read the IDW comics, but I think having one person the famously aloof Decepticon is head over heels for is funny, at least in concept
i think people who like it should be thrown in jail, so basically (spoilers) blast off was in love with onslaught but onslaught wasn't really interested in him, then starscream got airachnid to brainwash the combaticons to be super loyal to starscream and like revive swindle or something i forgot, but he left blast off to know the truth and keep them in line if they start to get suspicious they got brainwashed and starscream bribed blast off by making onslaught be in love with him, eventually starscream confessed all his crimes and with that, everything he did to the combaticons and then theres a panel of the combaticons in jail with blast off injured by onslaught
The plastic having a chalk or dust feeling out of the box on magic square stuff is still so odd for me, transforming this team also felt a lil nerve racking swindle mainly for me have scary parts transforming. While they is seemingly less trapezoid tabs the ones there are still annoying to deal with especially on swindle. (Swindle just seems to be the worst of the lot which is unfortunate for the character) The combiner is nice it holds together well and has good posing although kinda wish he came with a shockwave gun to hold not a mini figure just a static gun. The different versions just don’t make much sense there’s very little change with the figures themselves the main notice is the head colours it’s the accessory’s which after seeing what they did with menasor makes no sense either pack it in with a high price or sell a separate kit, this set feels like it’s somewhat hampered by corporate first decisions and not figure design first. I love Bruticus and really wanted to like this but it’s a 7/10 there’s a lot of good but a lot of bad mixed in
Regarding Vortex's blades; Helicopters at rest, specifically military types with super long props do tend to bow downward when at rest. So I think it adds to Vortex's overall look.
I don't mind 'spaghetti engineering' IF everything tabs together, is solid, and doesn't leave kibble hanging off the figure, that said I agree, I'm kinda annoyed that some 3rd party companies make complex transformations just for the sake of "toon accuracy" or whatever
Before anything else, condolences about your grandmother, mate. It almost feels like Swindle was handled by a completely different team, and Vortex was done by them, but they were reined in before they repeated the fuckups. Also, while still ultimately a system I do not prefer, I don't ultimately mind combiner skeletons, particularly Legacy Menasor's. It's actually what won me over getting the toy despite saying I'd only get Shadowstrip (and got all five PLUS Dragstrip anyway). I have more problems with AotP Superion's specifically for reasons that I think Menasor did better, most of all that the alt mode of the skeleton is A LOT more graceless than, say, actually leaning into being a back booster that ISN'T at all cohesive, like how Gundam did it sometimes. But my bigger point. I'm ultimately ok with skeletons, coz they give me story potential more than anything else. Something that makes Devastator (so far) special in that regard: The combiner frame users CAN'T naturally combine. Unlike Devastator, them using frames means their combinations are forced. And that has potential in any story to write with them.
It's just a titan master with a shapeways faceplate. Sadly the faceplate down when they filed for bankruptcy. Shapeways is coming back, but the marketplace won't. Starting from scratch I'm afraid. Also the rest is just toyhax.
3:37 Call me uninitiated, but what does being the "Bobby Skullface of Magic Square" mean? I'm vaguely familiar with the reviewer, but that's the first I've ever heard the term.
Bobby Skullface is extremely critical and holds figures to higher standards (prefers painted plastic and painted eyes, ratchets, above basic articulation, etc.). He's very Pro-Consumer, if I collected 3rd party figures, he'd be a good second opinion on whether or not to spend your money. Dr. Lockdown does similar for those debating whether a Legends scale figure is worth it.
Another amazing video, man!! 23:44 Funny thing: from reviews I've seen, Magic Square Swindle seems to be more despised by his lonesome than the entirety of Devastator with a side order of Megatron *combined*. (And Vortex seems to be not too far behind him) 34:16 Brawl heads tend to look perpetually pissed off at all times. Except the CW Brawl, the sculpting just makes that head look like a Dollar and a Quarter Tree Dinobot. Which ain't bad, but it ain't BRAWL. And... 35:42 ...yeah, I think I can say that for a lot of the PerfectEffect CW upgrade kit feet; at least the Bruticus mold versions with the railgun barrels - the tips seem to fall off if you look at'em funny, even when the guns are all combined into foot mode. 37:18 Onslaught reminds me somewhat of a cross between Zeta's & MMC's. I like it. This guy alone makes it seem like the high price of these mofos is worth it. 41:45 ...hate on Legacy United Vector Prime?? Dafuq?? 42:38 Well...CW Swindle doesn't have any arrogant asshole energy, either, he looks more perpetually pissed off than Brawl...which is just sooo wrong. 50:30 ...it seems better than the black wannabe ninja mask and the weird lilac for eyes that looks almost sky blue... 51:42 Yeah, I guess Vortex is the second most hated of this set. Ouch. 😮😮😮 1:09:11 All these shots fired!! Love it!! 1:12:07 ...excluding the OSKO, was there any other Legends scale Menasor?
I saw, and I'm intrigued. No such thing as too late: it's good to let companies cook. Iron factory Liokaiser took two and a half years from first announcement, and look how amazing that turned out
My favorite combiner at the moment is the iron factory DJD. That said, the only competition it has is a combiner wars style hodgepodge comprised of darkwing, dreadwing, cutthroat, jazz, and either starscream or scattershot. . . Yea, no contest.
The DJD is such a unique set, the way it disassembled and reassembles. The only other combiner I know that does that is G1 raiden, and even then it's not on the same level of insanity
It is unfortunate that the only member of the MS Combaticons I got was Swindle, yeah, I don't like it at all, like you said the alt mode is bland the transformation is a pain. Swindle put me off getting the rest, and I love Bruticus Ah yes Bruticus getting defeated by Menasor, Bruticus only lost because he got attacked from behind lol, I would like to see Bruticus fight Menasor again
I have experience with one figure that uses the ms nylon plastic, and it "is more durable" in that it has accidentally been stepped once on without breaking or even getting much paint chipping. The "tolerances are also better" in that they havent degraded nearly as much as some toys ive gotten more recently that use standard plastic. This is by no means scientifically sound as my sample size is one, but ms arent blatantly lying about why they use nylon. That said, i never notice plastic quality and would not have known it was nylon if it wasnt said in multiple reviews, especially since i have the version of said toy that is fully painted in a glossy finish.
Everytime I see a nice Bruticus combiner I'm reminded that I want to get the MMC one completed. Only got their Swindle. I'll work on that. Just want one Bruticus in my collection that suits me. Did you ever find the Swindle face? It looks kinda haunting without it.
hmmmm, i was considering getting the mp scale on but honestly even though i havent finished the video im definately warming up to the ledgends one, the price is still ehhh for me as it always will be with ledgends but the alt modes are very nice
I saw this and was looking at it a couple of times, waiting to get your thoughts on it since you had such high praise for Menasor. I don't see Hasbro doing a Bruticus anytime soon so I might look at getting the legends scale one to use for now in my collection. Man I need more shelves....
Actually, vortex was announced last Cybertron con. The rest were also leaked a while ago. It'll probably be complete by mid 2026, though at the moment we have no idea what it looks like.
@@DrLockdown I never heard of this, that's cool. I got the Acoustic Wave Soundblaster based on your thoughts on it as my first 3P figure. I find the casettes just ok but the main figure is great! So yeah, until I see a Hasbro Bruticus (which might be what you mentioned) it will be maybe the Masterpiece Magic Square Bruticus since the Legends is out of stock atm.
Great video Dr lockdown. Sorry for your loss, I've never lost a relative that close to me, so I can only imagine the pain. Also, who's the white and red Jet at 17:06 besides Blastoff? It looks really cool but I don't remember ever seeing it before
3:34 wdym by the bobby skullface of legends? ive just recently started watching him so idk much about any controversies or whatever surrounding him 8:19 thats off of an incorrect scan i think, like what happened to FOC vortex but a different pallete, thats why all of them got a C line (im commenting before watching the whole vid) forgot the timestamp but hes called lord of war also how do you get confused on which version is which when the boxes are so different? lastly i think you should've mentioned how the masterpiece sells the toon parts separately, but i think at this scale its fine selling the bots differently depending on what parts u want, since like, thats why legends collecting became big nowadays, because its cheap
The thing is, i don‘t hate combiner skeletons. Not at all. If they are done right, they can be amazing! Just look at ms Menasor! And for a design that is literally impossible to do the normal way, i.e Menasor, Devestator, it is a godsend! *But* The fact of the matter also stands that it kind of is cheating. Mastermind Creations has showed us that an integrated combiner CAN be done. And it can be done amazingly. So i don‘t see why we should rely on skeletons ALL the time. But still, i think theyre a great idea.
Looking at your magic square bruticus, the shell looks like it's using the IDW parts. That, and the material probably also help them cut the cost for sale
"""""IDW""""" (Despite the fact it's accurate to nothing from the comics, or even the toon or original toy, and this is coming from someone who doesn't care for accuracy)
@DrLockdown I think it's fine, it's my first combiner now that I think about it. So I'm very biased. At first I planned to skip it entirely till i found it in my online store selling it for about a 25% discount saying because he opened it to check the condition, I decided why not buy it at that cost? God, I did not regret it. that and idk much about accuracy i just think and see it looks like bruticus
44:58 I've said it b4, I'll say it again, I'll take faux parts over parts forming ANY DAY, but yeah when you're folding faux parts over the real parts of kibble they represent, it starts to feel a bit pointlessly try-hard
I'll always prefer non-skeleton combiners, but I do get the advantages of skeletons. It's mostly just a personal feel thing. CW Bruticus, save for poor combiner feet, was exactly what I'd want and is yet to be topped (at his price at least. MMC's looks pretty damn good). As for Legends, Dinoking is doing all I want, flaws and all. Gimme that clumsy oaf made of clumsy idiots! Shame MMC didn't really do the Legends size right with this. I'm glad 3/5ths came out so well, but damn Swindle...it's a shame, given I love the bastard as a character, but damn that is a REALLY annoying looking design. A 10cm figure made for adults shouldn't be that much trouble to transform.
It was, but that's why it was technically under a different company and was shipped headless with a "free head accessory". And the legends bruticus they were talking about seemed to vanish from their upcoming releases. May not be related, but honestly, after superitron, bullet dodged
God yeah, their Unicron DID end up being a success, a great no frills armada toy sized 86 Unicron with a near perfect robot mode and pretty well done planet mode, though people comparing it to the Haslab I think miss the different goals of both. But their Primus was back on their BS and I shudder to imagine their Bruticus after their last combiner.@@DrLockdown
13:06 (proceeds to show the legends version, lol) As someone who owns the MP version, it does look much nicer but a pain to put on on mine since it has quality control issues
53:55 i think that the articulation graphic is nice! And like, do people skip conversion sections of videos? Why? Is that not like,,, the whole point ???
Great video as always. Like usual, I heavily disagree with some points you make and I feel like you complain too much about Swindle, but I'm not the creator of the video so I don't get to decide that. I am wondering though, if any, what are your thoughts on MS Hoist? He's my second 3rd party Legends class figure so far, and I personally have had a lot of fun with him, and I would absolutely recommend him.
I heard nothing but criticisms about the conversion, so I skipped it. I do have trailbreaker though, and he's lovely. He's... somewhere...I don't know where he ended up after I moved...
@@DrLockdown Really? The only part I don't enjoy about the conversion is the fact that you need a tool half the time to get the head out. Outside of that, I really enjoy it. Trailbreaker does look great though, might get him sometime.
3:04 I disagree. I have MS shockwave and he's a solid figure with a simple transformation imo. Plastic feels good, paintwork is nice, fun to pose and transform
@DrLockdown they all have names. Menasors I’m blanking on, but Bruticus is ‘lord of war’ Also MS customer support is genuinely some of the best I’ve seen out there. Over the last year they’ve sent me almost an entire Ratchet worth of spare parts, a gun for optimus, replacement devastator pieces and a swindle face (I love my swindle but yeah the face is a problem).
magic square is probably the only legends company where "they should really upscale this to voyager/masterpiece size" is an actual valid critique of them

They're currently doing that with bruticus

That's unite warriors afterburner, a retool of unite warriors (and POTP) blast off.
Hence the comparison.
3:34 wdym by the bobby skullface of legends? ive just recently started watching him so idk much about any controversies or whatever surrounding him
8:19 thats off of an incorrect scan i think, like what happened to FOC vortex but a different pallete, thats why all of them got a C line (im commenting before watching the whole vid)
forgot the timestamp but hes called lord of war
also how do you get confused on which version is which when the boxes are so different?
lastly i think you should've mentioned how the masterpiece sells the toon parts separately, but i think at this scale its fine selling the bots differently depending on what parts u want, since like, thats why legends collecting became big nowadays, because its cheap
5:47 those are smoke grenade launchers, they launch the smoke Grenades to conceal the tank for a brief time
I send my condolences
14:35 just by that one glance in believe blast off was constructed from a B-17 Flying Fortress strategic bomber
Hope you're having a good day
What line are those trainbots from?
Which one? G1 or 3P?
3P is Siyang Culture
@DrLockdown ahh siyang culture
Would you recommend them?
@BromineBlues-om7yf so far yeah, but it's not two are out
I'm sorry for your loss, I hope you're doing better❤🦔
"""""IDW"""""
(Despite the fact it's accurate to nothing from the comics, or even the toon or original toy, and this is coming from someone who doesn't care for accuracy)
@@DrLockdown i did not know he had a base mode and yes, swindle is a nightmare and so is vortex for me
I'm stupid. What are trapezoidal tabs?
Tabs in the shape of a trapezoid
@DrLockdown Should've figured that. Not really 100% today.
Is oki. Mood.
How does the IF Liokaisee feel in-hand so far?
Pretty damn good
your nails are fabulous omg
Welp, time to watch this review again
Why the Joe Pesci meme at the end of Onslaught's first segment?
44:58 I've said it b4, I'll say it again, I'll take faux parts over parts forming ANY DAY, but yeah when you're folding faux parts over the real parts of kibble they represent, it starts to feel a bit pointlessly try-hard
I wish I had more comments like this.
So many people insist they'd prefer partsforming to faux parts, especially in the shorts audience.
A 10cm figure made for adults shouldn't be that much trouble to transform.
hell ye, I've been waiting for this
I thought Zeta's Unicron DID come out? that the 01 "Cell" was that?
13:06 (proceeds to show the legends version, lol)
As someone who owns the MP version, it does look much nicer but a pain to put on on mine since it has quality control issues
Oh? Oops.
I don't own either, and neither TTG or PE have swindle yet, so I relied on google photos.
@@DrLockdownPE showed mp swindle in his top figures of 2024 I think
Huh.
Must've not had the footage when I asked him.
In my defence, this video has been I production for a damn long time
53:55 i think that the articulation graphic is nice! And like, do people skip conversion sections of videos? Why? Is that not like,,, the whole point ???
Hope your grandma got a proper send off dude.
Anyways
I’m starting to realize why dwj is using ms stuff as references for his art
Was the start of the video supposed to be muted? also nice nails.
Yes. My grandmother is dead.
Do you like the new age volcanicus?
Newage never made a volcanicus.
It was just a hoax some youtubers and bloggers made up by attaching existing combiner hands to fanmoded dinobots.
@ That makes sense honestly
Someone know a good TF collector discord server ?
Don't tell me he's sublte forshadowing all the way to the worst of the year list.
Huh...I guess that's... technically true...
3:04 I disagree. I have MS shockwave and he's a solid figure with a simple transformation imo. Plastic feels good, paintwork is nice, fun to pose and transform
53:55 You put an extra “f” after “something”.
Sorry for your loss, RIP😢😞
Magic Squares devastator is called "power king"
Huh...neat
@DrLockdown they all have names.
Menasors I’m blanking on, but Bruticus is ‘lord of war’
Also MS customer support is genuinely some of the best I’ve seen out there. Over the last year they’ve sent me almost an entire Ratchet worth of spare parts, a gun for optimus, replacement devastator pieces and a swindle face (I love my swindle but yeah the face is a problem).
@olivergreen3225 it's Menasor is Road King
10:54 yo is that Ghost trick music i hear?!
Yeah. Just played it earlier this month
18:28 Take a drink.
1:08:40 Starscream's Brigade.
That's the joke
All these panels and hinges, and they still need combiner kibble. Shameful.
48:42 Cyclops blast off
