I love your message, Wynton! You speak the truth about music education. I appreciate all you do to advocate for jazz!

When I was a kid I HATED Wynton Marsalis. I’d always see him on PBS or just around on tv and thought he was arrogant and stuffy. Now, as a musician and music teacher, man, I’d LOVE to meet him. His passion not solely for music but for music education is so heart warming and encouraging. One of my student’s dads met him a few times and told me he’s a down to earth kind of guy. I would’ve never thought that as a kid.

You were just a kid then and apparently didn't like good music. Wynton was always straight ahead honest and didn't tolerate bs. That's a great attitude.

@@namcat53 no, I liked good music. Actually had pretty good taste. I simply didn’t like him and found him to be arrogant.
That said, ironically, 2 years ago I actually met him and it was very lovely few minutes of conversation! I even expressed how I felt about him as a child and he got a good laugh out of that. He gave me great advice about teaching and said he’d like to meet me and my students! So, this thing has come around full circle lol.

This is a great video and Wynton is one of the greatest advocates of instrumental music that ever lived. I believe the reason that music education is in the sad state that it is in is because instrumental music educators are not teaching appreciation for the music they teach to their students. When those students grow up, they do not appreciate instrumental music and do not support instrumental music education. The music education system is not producing adults who appreciate instrumental music or who support music education. Music educators are too busy chasing their trophies and plaques to "waste" rehearsal time teaching appreciation for instrumental music to their students. Teaching students how to play musical instruments without teaching those students the significance of instrumental music is selfish, lazy, and destructive. Most music educators do not care what their students learn, they only care how well they perform. Music educators are killing music education with their selfishness.

This is a great video. Every student in every school music ensemble should see it. Unfortunately few, if any, have. This is because music educators don't receive plaques or trophies or respect or admiration from their peers for teaching their students the importance of music education. Music educators do not personally benefit from teaching their students the importance of music education. When those students become adults, they will not support music education. That is why music education is dying. It makes me sick.
