The officer’s over-the-top “I CAN’T!!” is both appropriate for the drama and gravity of the situation and a call back to the overacting camp of the original series. So well done!😁

Ricardo wore the role of Khan like a suit of armor. You could tell he was absolutely loyal to his people, but at the same time had an ego that would ultimately be the end of them all. When his First makes the point "we have a starship and are free to go wherever you like. You've already defeated Kirk by freeing us" or words to that effect, he wasn't wrong. But Khan's ego wouldn't stop till either or Kirk were dead. And, even Kirk is, literally a, genius (and has the benefit of Spock's) , to Khan they're inferiors in need of being put in their place.
I wouldnt say he was loyal to his people at all. With Genesis and a starship they could have ruled, or at least set themselves up pretty well in the galaxy. Khan could have replicated it and used it to terrorize everyone into submission. Going head to head with Kirk, a guy who had beaten him back in his best days, then repeated it just off the cuff when Khan had literally JUST surprised him was insane. Khan may be more intelligent but Kirk obviously has his number. Best to leave that in the rear view mirror, as Joachim so states.
What a power team that put this movie together. Harve Bennett. Nicholas Meyer, James Horner. All the actors. The SFX crew. Every one of them on their absolute A Game. Plus, at 2:24, look at Khan's crew, and how they flinch in surprise at the full-throated vengeance in Khan's voice as he screams "FIRE!!!!!!" Absolutely brilliant.
Now i'm wondering if Ricardo Montalban was directed to voice that line a little quieter (in a subdued "gotcha" sort of way) but went full ham instead 😄

Absolute perfection of a scene.. still amazes me and I've watched it dozens of times. I am still pounding my desk with my fist just as I pounded seat's hand rest all those years. And that is how great movies are made.
Kirk screwed up not raising the shields according to general order #24, a court marshal offense/violation! Then when he sent the prefix code to override control of the Reliant, after finding out the ship was hijacked, addition commands should have been immediately sent to shut down all systems and to go to minimum life support.
Agreed but the rebuttal to the appropriate course of action is that if he had done that the movie wouldn't have been nor would the events of Search for Spock or The Voyage Home occurred and if you really want to picky Kirk wouldn't have been in a position for the retrieval of George and Gracie to save Earth. So, an argument could be made that Kirk's hesitation saved Earth.
That look on Khan‘s face after the torpedo hit the Enterprise during their initial attack is so full of emotion. The look of “Finally, after all these years, after the loss of so many of my people, and especially after the loss of my wife, they are being avenged!”
I never was into Star Trek, whether on tv or the movies. Though when I read and heard about this particular one and how the writers, director and producer went back to view all the original Star Trek tv episodes and decided on the selection of this specific one due to its characters, etc. also the original “villain” Richardo Montaban was returning to reprise his role of the original character, I was intrigued to see the movie, because I am a big Richardo Montaban fan. After seeing it I was glad I did! For it was surely the very best Star Trek movie “ever”! I didn’t have to see any of the other Star Trek movies after that, because I knew none would compare to Star Trek The Wrath of Khan! I got so caught up with this specific movie and its storyline, etc. that it made me look and find and see the specific Star Trek episode that it was all based on…”Space Seed”.
So every Federation starship has a public-facing API that allows another ship to lower its shields using a 5-digit decimal code? Yeah, you would definitely want that. (Still love the movie.)
I'm just going to assume that the code automatically changes after a single botched attempt, because otherwise the whole point is ridiculously stupid. I note that it was never mentioned again in any movie or series franchise.
No. Not at all what happened. Khan had to give him access to Reliant's computer and then Spock slaved Enterprise's command console to it like a wireless keyboard and lowered the shields.
I was in shock when I first saw this because this is also the 5 digit number to our P.O. Box for our family owned company in west Seattle since 1962. When I saw the movie and it was 16309…I was like, we are getting SO much mail after this… it never came. No one else made the connection.
When the Reliant was not responding to hails and faking a chamber coil malfunction when Spock scanned the Reliant then said '' their shields are going up '' that Kirk would have known something is wrong and raised Enterprise's shields quicker he thought the Reliant was still friendly ship but it wasn't anymore raising shields was not part of Yellow Alert in this time period just only for Red Alert .
Again, you are looking at it from an outsider's perspective. In the heat of the moment, especially in life and death situations, errors can be made because the brain is trying to work while trying to fight the stress. Adrenaline doesn't always work in your favor.
@@lakecountynaturalist7617 You failed to factor training into the mix. in a situation where a potentially friendly ship raises shields the appropriate reaction is to do the same. If there is a danger aboard there is no guarantee that the shields would contain it and if one ship spots something the other did not it's reasonable to respond the same way. Also, if there is a situation where transport is necessary, and both are on the same team, then they can modulate the shields to allow transport. So in reality the hesitation was to allow for the story since normal response from the characters would not have resulted in the heavy damage of both ships.
I will never forget my surprise and delight at finding out that the USS Reliant's prefix code was my home address number at the time.

Raise them!!! 🤣🤣 Brilliant! Still my favorite Trek film.
THIS was the ultimate TREK.... beautiful. Thank you for those who made it happen.
The best scene of the best film of the entire franchise. Shat was never better.
✨❤Kirstie Alley❤️
Khan is savouring this moment, and can't wait to pay back Kirk along with his entire crew. The music @1:09 kicks ass.
That look on Khan‘s face after the torpedo hit the Enterprise during their initial attack is so full of emotion. The look of “Finally, after all these years, after the loss of so many of my people, and especially after the loss of my wife, they are being avenged!”
Best star Trek movie
This is a prime example of why Kirk was the guy you want in charge of your Starship.
Get him in the Oval Office!
Get Kirk in the Oval Office
Best scene in the best Star Trek movie ever.
A great clip to watch on the occasion of William Shatner’s 93rd birthday.
Ah, those pesky regulations, sometimes they can be a pain to follow, but you should always keep in mind, they were written for a reason....
Reliant's phaser cannons are mint
Legend Movie 😊
Reliant's IT director must have been pissed when the captain chose a 5 digit password, no upper or lower case letters, no symbols.
Done with toggle switches, so you can't use any number more than once!
I remember this scene when I was a kid
This scene was one of the best scenes in movies, about tactics, nerves, decision making, consequences, and what makes a leader a leader.
The start of the adventure. Living vicariously through you... My condolences to the family loss.
A great takeaway here is Jim realized he should’ve listened to Saavik. And he wasn’t too proud to admit he fucked up
So every Federation starship has a public-facing API that allows another ship to lower its shields using a 5-digit decimal code? Yeah, you would definitely want that. (Still love the movie.)
I'm just going to assume that the code automatically changes after a single botched attempt, because otherwise the whole point is ridiculously stupid. I note that it was never mentioned again in any movie or series franchise.
If you listen to the dialogue the prefix code is to prevent an enemy from hacking into the ship’s computer and lower the shields
So where exactly *WAS* the override on the Reliant's console?
@1acroyear1 It would be a violation of Starfleet regs if I told you. Sorry.
@@alanparsonsfan The ship already blew up. You're not keeping any classified secrets. But if you tell me, I'll share a secret about Spock and Valeris.
Think it adds to the whole Kobiashi maru test. He tries to cheat everything, even the fate of himself and crew. 😂
Gotta love that 5 digit security code that any modern computer would brute force in milliseconds.
Khan says the unforgettable line, "LET THEM EAT STATIC"!
I never did understand why he kept calling her Mr Saavik?
I'm guessing it was a common way of addressing cadets
Tradition.
When the Enterprise went to yellow alert, why weren't their Shields automatically raised? I always thought that the shields went up with yellow alert.
That became a thing AFTER this.
