Look at how Bekele is giving space to Kipchoge on the first lane. Now this is sportsmanship. They all know this is the last 100 meters and everyone should have a chance. Respect for all of them. Inspiring.
Then it would have made sense to prevent Hicham further and move to the 3rd lane in front of him! But we all know (including Bekele) how ugly and illegal this would look. So his only legal strategy would have been keeping Kipchoge boxed out by staying on the first lane. But he didn't do it. Many runners would. Because it's legal!
There are no lanes in marathon, so you can pretend you are dizzy :) and move whereever you want. It will be hard to prove anything afterwards. But on track it's all very clear. All your moves make sense. Usually finshers don't go from 1st lane to 2nd just to make someone go extra. Because they know it's extra for both. Both the attacker and the guard.
Ethan Lamp true, they were really racing!! And look at kipchoge and bekele, they are still racing for marathons. Its just pure passion. The old style never gets old.
Few months prior to this race, Bekele broke the 10000m, and 5000m world records. Eliud Kipchoge was only 20 years old. Three world record holders were in the race. Hicham, Bekele, and Zersenay Tadese. Everyone had no less than week to rest. But, Hicham only rested for two days after a very tough race of the 1500m. El Guerrouj suffered from a sickness prior to the Olympics. From the beginning of this race, an Ethiopian runner was in front of him, another one stayed beside him, and third one was behind him.."the boxed in plan". There is no doubt that everyone of those champions inspire this generation. I just cannot think how much I like the king of the mile!
Yes it is the 5000m. That was mistyping. However, the world record of 10000m was broken by Bekele in Ostrava in 08.06.2004, and the time was 26:20.31 just before the Olympics. Then, he broke his record in Bruxelles again a year later.

in this race : Marathon WR holder , 10000 and 5000 WR holder, half marathon WR holder , and 1500 and one mile WR holder ,,, respectively Kipchoge , Bekele, Tedesse , and El guerroug ... Wow
It's crazy what El Guerrouj was able to achieve back then that both his records of 1500m and 1 mile are still unbeaten. Also Bekele in his prime was an absolute beast. Kipchoge just wasn't meant for 5k and 10k. Great to see all 3 5000m, 1500m and marathon legends competing alongside.
kipchoge seems to have played second fiddle for years in his 5000/10000 career. lost to el guerrouj, bekele, and then mo farah. with the benefit of hindsight, he should've dipped after the 2003 and went into the marathon. he would've done fine against geb and wanjiru
El Guerrouj ran very bravely and with heart, and he got an amazing win against 3 top Ethiopians and the top Kenyan! .... Man, .... El Guerrouj was not about to be intimidated by anyone! He took the fight to Bekele and Kipchoge in their own distance of racing and made them say "uncle" .... Even more impressive than his record time of 3'27" in the 1500m ... Simply awesome .... Bravo!

I remember watching this live in 2004 with my housemate at the time. The first 6 or 7 laps were not particularly quick, and I said to him at the time that the rest of the competitors are giving this to El Guerroj. For maybe the first and last time in my lifetime, I actually called a race correctly!

Imagine the 2 previous loss of Hicham el guerrouj in Atlanta and Sydney in 1500m. Then came back so strong to win the double gold 1500m and 5000m all together in 2004 and he's still 1500m world record holder until today. Unbelievable, mentally strong, brave and legendary to finish your career like this. It seems like a script of movie.

Hicham mile and 2 k record is endangered bc Timothy and jakob is or me if I get that motivation which rn I got slouchy mile time at 5:40 turn 19 July 24 2020 still trying 2 eat more but I sure im faster now currently I do 4 400 meter 5 min rest under 72 seconds then 10 min rest 4 next on still managed under 72 same rest time but on 2 rep
Probably my favourite race of all time. The greatest 1500 metre runner of all time, racing the greatest 5000 metre runner of all time. Both at their peaks. Nobody thought El Guerroj had a hope. A middle distance runner hadn't won a 5000 metre gold since the 1930s. How could he step up from 3.75 laps to 12 and compete with a guy like Bekele? Well, you saw the answer in the last 2 laps. Bekele may have been an insanely fast finisher for a long distance runner, but that's nothing compared to the finishing speed of a 1500 metre world record holder. El Guerroj not only chased down Bekele from 8 metres, but easily passed him
Said Aouita did win both 1500m and 5000m, he was the only runner to run from 800m to 5000, and was the record holder of 1500m, 2000m, 3000m and 5000m, look him up
Bekele was not at his peak in this race.. that statement is simply wrong. KB was most certainly at peak race performance ability in 2008, 4 years after this race.

@@borood1188 he was running marathon early in his carreer and even won the world champion of youth beating anothler legend haile gebrselassie ( who was the king of 5000 and 10000 before bekele ) el G definitely had potentiel for 10k and marathon too but he choosed 1500 wich is not an easy distance because it requies both staminna and speed

El Guerrouj is a living example of the strength of determination and patience. He lost the final of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Olympics final in the 1500m race. He easily won all races throughout the season, then relapsed in the Olympic championship.. He worked hard and patiently for 8 years, which are many years for a runner.. Until he won the gold of 1500m and 5000m at the Athens Olympics in Greece.. El Guerrouj is one of the greatest runners in history.
Coming back from 2024 to re-watch this race, how the great Moroccan defeated Bekelele in his prime, and seeing Kipchoge the marathon goat giving it all what he got in the last stretch. Watched this race back in 2004, never had an idea that 20 years later, Kipchoge and Bekelele would become legends, and no one still could beat the record of Hicham in the mile

Hicham got ahead easily. I still believe Bekele moved out to the second lane for sportsmanship reasons.

It's crazy what El Guerrouj was able to achieve back then that both his records of 1500m and 1 mile are still unbeaten. Also Bekele in his prime was an absolute beast. Kipchoge just wasn't meant for 5k and 10k. Great to see all 3 5000m, 1500m and marathon legends competing alongside.
kipchoge seems to have played second fiddle for years in his 5000/10000 career. lost to el guerrouj, bekele, and then mo farah. with the benefit of hindsight, he should've dipped after the 2003 and went into the marathon. he would've done fine against geb and wanjiru
A year earlier Kipchoge defeated both Elguerrouj and Bekele in the world championship, he is a great runner come on!

El Guerrouj ran very bravely and with heart, and he got an amazing win against 3 top Ethiopians and the top Kenyan! .... Man, .... El Guerrouj was not about to be intimidated by anyone! He took the fight to Bekele and Kipchoge in their own distance of racing and made them say "uncle" .... Even more impressive than his record time of 3'27" in the 1500m ... Simply awesome .... Bravo!

لا اخي هذا السباق كان في تنسيق خطة طبق الاصل عندما خسر لصالح كيبشوجي في باريس وهذا حدث نادر يقع لتعاون الاثيوبين مع الكنين

You have to respect El Guerrouj.
Uh Bekele made a terrible mistake in this race. All he had to do was push the pace early on. Hicham would not have had a chance.

I remember watching this live in 2004 with my housemate at the time. The first 6 or 7 laps were not particularly quick, and I said to him at the time that the rest of the competitors are giving this to El Guerroj. For maybe the first and last time in my lifetime, I actually called a race correctly!

Imagine the 2 previous loss of Hicham el guerrouj in Atlanta and Sydney in 1500m. Then came back so strong to win the double gold 1500m and 5000m all together in 2004 and he's still 1500m world record holder until today. Unbelievable, mentally strong, brave and legendary to finish your career like this. It seems like a script of movie.

Hicham mile and 2 k record is endangered bc Timothy and jakob is or me if I get that motivation which rn I got slouchy mile time at 5:40 turn 19 July 24 2020 still trying 2 eat more but I sure im faster now currently I do 4 400 meter 5 min rest under 72 seconds then 10 min rest 4 next on still managed under 72 same rest time but on 2 rep

Probably my favourite race of all time. The greatest 1500 metre runner of all time, racing the greatest 5000 metre runner of all time. Both at their peaks.
Nobody thought El Guerroj had a hope. A middle distance runner hadn't won a 5000 metre gold since the 1930s. How could he step up from 3.75 laps to 12 and compete with a guy like Bekele?
Well, you saw the answer in the last 2 laps. Bekele may have been an insanely fast finisher for a long distance runner, but that's nothing compared to the finishing speed of a 1500 metre world record holder.
El Guerroj not only chased down Bekele from 8 metres, but easily passed him

Bekele was not at his peak in this race.. that statement is simply wrong. KB was most certainly at peak race performance ability in 2008, 4 years after this race.

@@borood1188 he was running marathon early in his carreer and even won the world champion of youth beating anothler legend haile gebrselassie ( who was the king of 5000 and 10000 before bekele ) el G definitely had potentiel for 10k and marathon too but he choosed 1500 wich is not an easy distance because it requies both staminna and speed

El Guerrouj is a living example of the strength of determination and patience. He lost the final of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Olympics final in the 1500m race. He easily won all races throughout the season, then relapsed in the Olympic championship.. He worked hard and patiently for 8 years, which are many years for a runner.. Until he won the gold of 1500m and 5000m at the Athens Olympics in Greece.. El Guerrouj is one of the greatest runners in history.

Coming back from 2024 to re-watch this race, how the great Moroccan defeated Bekelele in his prime, and seeing Kipchoge the marathon goat giving it all what he got in the last stretch. Watched this race back in 2004, never had an idea that 20 years later, Kipchoge and Bekelele would become legends, and no one still could beat the record of Hicham in the mile
