I see news every year about foreigners losing their lives in the backcountry due to avalanches and distress in the mountains of Japan in search of JaPow, so This kind of risk and cooperation with local people is very, very important and it was a very good video.
Man, I just started learning last year, 2023 and this film just gives me goosebumps. Powder boarding is something of an experience, makes grown men shriek, filled with unexplained and unbridled joy. Thank you for this beautiful film.
@Stickybutton so your not a fan of earning your turns I take it. Would you rather hit lifts and the same boring runs? I'd rather have an adventure and enjoying everything the mountains have to offer. Deep powder, beautiful scenery and great company. Enjoy yourself!!
I love your philosophy at 11:25 I have tried to live by these rules during all of my travels to Japan and elsewhere. Getting spoon-fed glory bluebird pow every day is unrealistic. Putting time and effort in, and pulling the plug when the conditions aren't lining up, is always the right move. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't, but as long as we are smiling (or at least breathing) at the end of the day then it's a victory!
I've learnt so much about my own snowboarding from watching your videos. The main thing I take away is that it's ok to walk away and not ride that line if it doesn't feel right. Don't get suckered into that 'peer-pressure' to just go for it whatever the cost. It's just not worth it. Respect the weather and nature because they're bigger than you are. I'm sure that this new found respect will hopefully keep me riding into my 60th year and beyond. Peace. 🤜🤛
It's crazy that snowboarding has progressed so much that "steep and deep" is not really one category anymore. Different riders prioritize steep and deep separately and it's cool how this movie highlights this, great watch
Everything about this is done right. From your approach to the mountains, to understanding the importance of 郷に入っては郷に従え. Turning around when necessary, and more importantly highlighting just how special it is to get the weather for those things to line up in order to ride those lines. Social media would have us all believe that every day is a sunny pow day, but you do a good job of highlighting what makes those alluring lines in the greater Daisetsuzan area so rare to have the trifecta of visibility, stability, and good snow to line up. Having spent most every winter guiding there since 2009, your perspective resonates with me as I have been to some of those lines you show in this video and completely understand how amazing of terrain there is to be had if you're willing to put the effort (which tends to be a lot) in. Good on you Antti, glad others are starting to explore outside the box, and even when it's not the best snow, coming home at the end of the day with a smile and time spent with good people in the mountains is always a much better reward.
It's incredible to see your moments of growth throughout the adventures in your films! It's very inspirational to explore outside of our comfort zones and create relationships with others no matter where we go. I can't wait to see what hidden wonders you find next!
Thank you so much Antti! That is one of the best snowboard movies I have seen in a long time. I love that you not only show the joy but also the risk and your own development of what you love about the sport. It makes me really wanna go back to Japan where I had the best snowboarding of my life and pushed my own boundaries.
Really loved this video, Antti. Thank you for taking us along the ride to see how your deep love for snowboarding evolves. There's a lesson in here about life for all of us!
That was great! This higher, more alpine are with the volcano looks georgeous - so much potential there! Also something very different for once. Usually when I think of snowboarding / skiing in Japan, one of the first thing that comes to mind is the Japan part of Eero Ettala and Nicolas Müller in Absinthe's "Neverland". Classic tree shred-it...
Cool! Glad to hear. That video part of Muller in Asahikade is legendary. Such a good vibes on it. It’s hard to make a better Japan treeriding edit so might as well go explore higher up 😊
Reminds me so much of the great touring near Asahidake and Rusutsu (including all the crazy glide cracks ha) Feb last year! Thanks for showing more Alpine stuff out there for another trip yet to come :)
Jajaja!! My birthday is on Groundhog Day. ❤these videos. My back is too broken to get out & do this, so I appreciate you for sharing your passion with me & the world!🤙
That was really cool to see the Tokachi-dake alpine. Also great to see the relationships you have established in Japan. I usually ride alone in Japan and for the most part am too scared to venture far off trail with the exception of niseko and similar resort side country. I remember once years ago a Japanese guy suggested that I ride the south face skiers right of the top lift at happo-one. Two days later it ripped to the bottom of the valley. Needless to say I didn’t take his advice. I knew at the time that three of my countrymen had died in an avalanche riding the north face of happo-one. Can’t wait to see your next instalment here in NZ. Thanks for the inspiration.
Yes, Tokachi is very nice area. Being able to venture further in the backcountry depends on many things and if not 100% sure it makes much more sense to enjoy riding somewhere a bit closer to the resorts🤙 or perhaps hiring a local guide who can show you around! wish you a good winter.
Thank you for the great video! A few years ago, I happened to meet Antti in Japan and was able to snowboarding with you for a short time, which is a cherished memory of mine. Please come back to Aizu again. At that time, ONSEN and Ramen will be waiting for you. "KAETTE OIDE"
It doesn't make sense how video can convey so much emotion. Incredible video, I hope you can enjoy trips like this countless times. keep it up friend 🏔🏂💟
Always hire a local guide when in the Japan back country for safety and where the best stashes are…Basics. Looking forward to the 2024/25 season of Hokkaido japowwow
Real cool movie ! Happy to see Antti San in Japan ! Really inspiring. I’ll be in Hokkaido next week, sure I’ll choose the easy mellow powder rather than steep and avalanche 😉🤙 Hope the start will be WITH my bags 😉🙏
Hey Antti just scrolled thru youtube and this popped up here in Bali :) we going Switzerland next week and probably Kris his first snow and if possible snowboard experience on the horizon. Great to see you still enjoying it! Cheers best from Bali Philippe
This was epic! Fascinating to hear some of your thoughts in these heavy backcountry adventures. I just returned (kaette kimashita) from Myoko where they got a massive dump. I can’t wait to see more of your adventures in Japan ❤🙏
